Talk me off the ledge...thinking of switching irons

Recommended Posts

Well last year I started off with JPX 900 Forged and switched after a couple months back to AP2s. Had the AP2s in the bag for almost a year now and I am playing well with them. However I have been looking at the Taylormade P770s and a combo set of CBs/MBs either Titleist, Mizuno, or Cobra. Might be that I just haven’t played or hit any balls since last October. I’m constantly looking at the BST and eBay at irons!!

In addition to this I went to Roger Dunn’s today and hit several different irons and surprisingly I walked away really liking the Callaway X Forged 2018 as well.

Usually I’m like this with the driver and stick with my irons, but no interest in a driver at all, as my 2016 M2 is money for me. Maybe I just really need to go play.

Must be something in the air tonight....I just posted a similar dilemma as you but of the Mizuno variety.

I’d say if your playing well and your comfortable, stick with the AP2’s. But if you do switch, do it now before the season gets full swing as you have some time to adjust.

I’m in the Chicago area and desperately waiting for spring.

Lets welcome him to the group everybody. I will be your facilitator in this ClubHoesAnonymous . Nobody here will judge you. We each have our own demons that we have to deal with. Better to talk and express your feelings as we all are going through the same struggle.

As I said it would take an act of Congress for me to take the 2016 M2 out of the bag. Plus none of the new drivers even interest me.

Well...I too play an M2 but it is just wrong to say you are not interested in something else...very un WRX like if I must say :-)

As for your irons, you have a great set but as a WRXer good to see you want to try something different even if you are playing well with the AP2 :-)

I played and liked the 716 AP2, but you are looking at one that I found to enjoy more in every way. I have no idea why the P770 does not get more attention. They are one of the softest, best feeling irons I have ever played. When my elbows got bad I jacked my set up with new shafts and still think about going back to them sometimes.

They are super consistent with distance while being pretty long and not a difficult club to move a little in both directions. I was SO impressed the way solid shots melted into the face...and any P770 player will likely echo this. If you like looking down at them you will certainly enjoy playing them.

I also played the latest X Forged for 20 rounds or so and liked them. I do not think they were as long or soft as the P770 but they are solid and look great!

As for combo sets, so many good ones now. I think several Srixon pieces work really well with each other. I am certainly loving the Z9xx series with a couple of Uxx at the very top of the bag. Others are loving multiple combinations of the Uxx,9xx,7xx, and 5xx just depending on where you are comfortable but they are all VERY solid.

This sort of talk should result in a suspension from WRX!

To be fair the ‘16 M2 was a fantastic driver and realistically any advancements that have been made since are not of the significant variety.

I’m playing JPX900 Tours 4-PW and love them. If anything though, blending the longer irons with something with more help might have been an idea. Blending the 919 range would be worth considering.

If it’s 718 AP2 then there won’t be much better out there for all around performance.

That’s a great stick for having player characteristics with decent forgiveness.

Maybe change out the long irons (3-5/6) to TMBs and your set can feel new again?

But the 718 AP2 short irons are just bliss.

It happens to me every winter. I love my Hogan PTx and my iron play is great, but I always start looking at other stuff once the new introductions are made in January.

The Cally CF19 smoke have my attention this year. I’m sure they will be hotter faced than I’d want, but they sure are nice looking to my eye.

If you haven't played because of the weather like me in the North, then all you think about is equipment...

I have a new rule - I won't buy anything new until I have played a month with my old stuff - funny how those old friends put new equipment thoughts out of my head!

I'm sitting in NYC with 5-8" of snow forecasted overnight... While my bag is virtually perfect fit for me... I keep considering if I should change anything. I just need to get back out and fire some low scores to change my tune, but I can't because of the weather!

Right now I think my saving grace is I haven’t been in a golf shop that has the P770s so I could hit them!!

That’s the struggle I face every winter. I’m currently watching several sets of irons on the bay. Somehow buying used makes it seem more acceptable, despite having a perfectly wonderful set of irons in my bag. With over a foot of snow stilll in the ground and a forecast high today of 7 degrees, not sure how much longer I can resist hitting the buy it now button. First world problems...

Just pull the trigger - you won't be disappointed!

Cue the comments about shill bidding and so forth (I got a set from them last year for under $375 shipped, no shill bidding and no excuses they were "out of stock", which I would've fully expected at that price if that was their common practice).

There's a great old song that fits the scenario of testing a variety of clubs even though you have a set that's working perfectly. The song is "Ho on the Range" and the chorus goes something like this:

Ho, ho on the range

Where the irons and drivers get played

Where seldom is seen a club that isn't a dream

And you never hit a bad shot all day

I lived in West Des Moines for about 10 years. I graduated from high school there . I feel your pain. It will eventually melt and the weather in the spring will be beautiful! I would love to go out and play Jester Park and Waveland this spring. Wish I could get back there.
