Stolen Clubs

Thanks again for all who have given me advice.

I have the Tampa dectective (he’s a fellow golfer) helping me. I emailed him a detailed list of my stuff.

My fear is they dumped them or just sold them to someone in the hood for quick cash and that person will eventually sell them.

Still have a hope..just not much.

I’ll add to everyone else’s sorry about the clubs, but congratulations on the new little one.

Question, if a person finds their clubs at a pawn shop or Play it Again type place, what happens next? Do you actually get your stuff back?

I believe you do. Even tho those places may have thought they were purchasing in good faith it’s still stolen goods so they’re screwed. I could be wrong but I think that’s how it goes.

FWIW - when I regrip my clubs, my ID is put under the new grip.

Actually accidentally left a club behind on a green years ago. Went back to the groups behind me & I see my club in a player's bag. He was adamant it was his, but I took it out, and slit the grip about 3" up from the bottom - he looked a little ash-holey when he saw my ID there.

Just a tip from your uncle augie.

OP - I hope you recover your stuff

No way you did that! No way. Lol

I put my ID from amazon, weatherproof on the underside of the grip below it . Maybe one should carve their initials in the rubber somehow? Or burn it!

Trust me when I say you will sadly NEVER retrieve your items.

What’s typically done with stolen property is it goes through a bunch of hands before it ends up in an auction or a pawn shop. That way even if you can locate your stolen driver, there will be no one to blame.

My wife owns an equestrian business and each rider owns a relatively expensive saddle. Thieves broke in and stole 7 saddles. Wife traced them on eBay because they all have serial numbers. Police were very good about trying to track it down and found the auction person but the goods went through about 4-5 sources before it got to this individual on eBay. Police don’t have the resources to track.

Best remedy is to see what insurance can do for you. All other efforts are relatively fruitless.

Wrong!

It doesn’t matter how many people it goes through. If the OP finds his items at a pawn shop or anywhere else, if he can prove it is his, they will return it to him. It’s still stolen property no matter how many times it has changed possession.

I had my clubs stolen a few years back, it sucks for a few weeks then it gets really fun. You are correct your home owners will buy you new clubs. Retail value of your bag minus deductible: Bag $3000 - deductable $1000 = $2000 cash in hand. Remember to take into account everything in the bag: rangefinder, range tokens, headcovers... I didn't account for this and had to make a supplemental claim.

My advice, forget your old clubs, use this as an opportunity to build your dream bag. Getting my bag stolen turned out to be a great. I met new people on the message boards, tried all the newest clubs, and found great deals on the BST. I would say getting my clubs stolen made me excited about the game in a way I couldn't have expected. Also if you mention you had you bag stolen you will get a discount.

I'll just add...if searching on craigslist. I recommend using one of the phone apps rather than searching on your computer. Reason being is my app lets me pick all the cities/areas I want to include in the search. It's a quick easy way to search a lot of areas without having to type in each city's website like you would on a computer.

This way you can search all of florida and surrounding states for golf key words once. Wouldn't take you more than a couple minutes to check each day.

Also, remember other trading places like Facebook marketplace, offerup and letgo and as always, ebay.

Good luck in your hunt. I'd personally file the insurance claim then keep looking.

Side question. If you found it on craigslist and the seller bought your club from the thief, can you take it from him for free? Since it was stolen good

Yes. Let the authorities do it for you. It’s still yours and it’s still stolen. Lesson is don’t buy stolen goods.

He never said the owner couldn’t get his clubs back. Only that the original thief couldn’t be tracked

I wonder if they just dumped all your stuff somewhere . Why would thieves doing financial stuff like credit cards, wallets, phones, etc. why would they bother with golf clubs?

They have no idea their value, just a nuisance really. Look at lost and found on Craigslist. And put that you lost your clubs on there . As well as any other items .

I know that prob doesn’t help. Sorry about your loss.

This sucks... I’m in St Pete so I will keep my eyes open also. I was at the golf shop on 4th St not long ago talking to the owner and some low-life came in with a bag of clubs and ask the owner if he would give him $100 for it. I was glad to see the owner tell him no and to go away. He said they come in all the time. Good luck!

Congrats on the new baby!

You won't have time to play golf now anyway. Lol. No need for clubs.

My clubs live in the trunk of my car. Hope yours turn up. All the clubs at my local flea market are junky flips from the Goodwill store.

I played more golf the 1st few years of my daughter's life, by far, than I do now. She's 14 now and a basketball player.

See that's where you messed up. I didn't play any golf for the first few years of her life, but she's 14 now and a golfer. We play every week.

The original thugs were caught and arrested in my car. So tracking the original thugs isn’t me end game. In fact, I have the police report and know their names and where they live. Although I’d love to have 5 mins with them in a locked room, all I care about is getting my clubs back.

Thanks for all the good advice. I’m still searching.

After talking to the Tampa detective, I’m convinced they dumped them. The bag was taking up my entire back seat and the cop said they typically will go pick up their boys when the steak a car. So to make room they probably dumped them, not knowing that bag was close to 3k with goods.

Typically the Police and prosecutor question the thieves as to what they did with the stolen items and offer a recommendation to the judge for cooperating so I would stay on the detectives / Police handling the crime.

Long shot but worth following up on.

If thieves realized what the used club market really looked like, they would never bother stealing them.

As punishment, th judge should make them haggle with Golfwrx’ers on BST.

or at least have to discuss the new rules with a certain member in the rules forum

(names withheld to protect the innocent - but most here know the reference)

Have to admit though August, that he is keeping that forum entertaining. The rules guys really are protective of the rules (and some surprisingly, of the USGA) and don’t care for someone questioning and stirring the pot about either. He’s certainly ruffling some feathers. And I’m starting to think that might be his main goal.
