Jordan lashes out at "Scum".......

Recommended Posts

JS can say what he wants.

But it's capitalism. Love it or leave it.

Hardly capitalism. Where is the capital? More like theft or fraud in my book.

Why would it be theft or fraud?

Taking under false pretenses.

What? Is a person required to state what they intend to do with an autograph before something is signed?

Is commonly thought that folks seeking autographs do so as a fan. One that wants a momento of their experience. These guys take advantage of that . It isn't illegal. But it is a bit underhanded in a way. But more so weird. Would be like taking coins from a fountain or stealing all the penny's from the take a penny thing at the gas station. As far as I know it's isn't against the law. But it is wrong. I see this as the same. It's always been done. And it likely alwasy will be. But what gripes most is that now they expect it. They expect to be catered to . To the point that if they aren't they apparently voice it as if a right they are entitled to is being infringed on. They have no right to an autograph. None. And I don't see why they aren't simply told .., no!

I don't get the autograph thing. But my daughter was pretty thrilled to briefly meet and get Rory's at 2008 PGA when she was 15, so I was happy she was happy. He was playing a practice round with Clarke and Westwood and Rory was one of few signing between holes. Kids were lined up solid for Rory. Clarke and Westwood stood about 20 yards away laughing at the attention Rory was getting and nobody was even approaching them.

I 100% agree with YJS on this, but when you take your kid to a sporting event of any kind these days you're gonna hear foul language. I can't really blame the guy on his 5th beer if he's dropping F-Bombs. I don't understand the parents who let their kids hang out by the ropes along side grown ups in hopes to get an autograph. YJS shouldn't have to protect your children, be a parent and do that yourself.

You know I don't see the 5th beer giving anyone a pass. If it causes an issue should have passed on beer 3 or 4. ;-)

"He's a child pornographer!"

"He's just trying to make a living."

"Oh. Well, why didn't you say so?"

The point is, making a living at something does not excuse its inherent immorality or wrongfulness. If anything, it may make some otherwise innocent activities appear wrongful because the motivation is greed rather than something one perceives as innocent.

That said, I'm reminded of what Sarazen (was it?) once said about feeling like a thief for getting paid to play golf. I'm safe.

I've always found it strange that something with someone else's name on it is worth something extra. Just seems odd to me.

Couldn't agree more!!

Ya know what's even stranger to me???

A grown ..... man wearing another man's jersey with that man's name and number on it, lmao

WTF????

Thanks for responding Bro!

Nice post?

All the Best,

RP

I totally agree Richard- I just don't get it...

However, anyone sporting a Walter Payton jersey gets a pass. Greatest. Ever. :)

Others have mentioned but I feel strongly about the language...and certainly shoving or pushing your way around kids. I'm really surprised that some of the parents have not stepped in if in fact it is like Jordan described. Good for JS.

there few things i value less than a piece of paper that you shoved in someones face and they randomly scribbled their name on it as they quickly moved to the next without the slightest bit of acknowledgement.

i guess i don't get how an autograph 'memorializes the experience'. if anything is even less valuable... it has to be a random piece of memorabilia bought at a premium because it has that persons name signed on it without ever having any interaction with that person. might as well pay someone to Photoshop you in a pic with your arm around tiger woods.

i get that kids think its cool. but if given the chance as a parent get a picture of your kid w the celeb over a signature. someone mentioned it earlier. if i were a pro, i'd sign kids only and personalize it. it now has much more meaning to the kid and eliminates the brokers selling.

i think autographs used to fun before everyone had a phone w a camera in their pocket. if you had an encounter w a celeb and you wanted something to take away from it you had them sign something. i just don't get it anymore, and i especially don't get it when you line up to have whatever signed as the signer is moving as fast as possible to sign as much as possible without giving you 2 seconds. i don't blame the pros at all, i just don't see the point. it also doesn't help that the media and even some fans determine your character or whether you are a 'good person' on how many autographs you sign.

bug killing and capitalism mentioned on the same thread :fie:

Indeed, lol. I will say that if I'm making my living killing bugs I can look myself in the mirror at night. If I'm making my living hounding Young Jordan Spieth for an autograph those mirrors are coming down. That's just me though, to each his own and so on and so forth.

I have never owned a jersey nor asked anyone for an autograph in my life. I realize I am in the minority and others have the right and freedom to worship at the alter of celebrity as they wish. To me, it seems like a lack of self-respect or negative self-image.

I liked Jordan a lot before this and like him more now. Not so much in the fact he took some "scum" to task. But it appears to be in an attempt to look out for the best interests of the kids who happened to be around the incident. I have two daughters and have called people out in public on a couple of occasions for language and behavior around my kids. I applaud him.

Forged, I know you said this was the equivalent of having some other guy's name and number on a shirt. My question is why? I have a bunch of soccer shirts, and frankly I think they look strange without a number and name on the back. I'm sure as hell not arrogant enough to get my own name and number printed on a shirt of a team that I'd never have a chance of kitting up for. Why not get my favorite player's?

Good on Jordan. Autographs are for kids.

Couple of posts in this thread are treading close to justifying it with the phrase "trying to earn living".

F that. Earn a living doing something decent.

That's your opinion, but who are you to say what a decent job is? Who is Jordan to say? He hits a white ball into a hole for million$ and schleps his UA gear for more million$.

Selling autographs for profit will never go away. I'm happy that Jordan asked those dudes to not swear in front of the kids, but to condemn these dudes for selling stuff while he does it himself is hypocritical.

And there isn't 'good' or 'bad' capitalism, so long as laws and regulations are obeyed. If you don't like the signature hounds don't buy their stuff. You know, invisible hand and all that.

Give me a break. Has nothing to do with that.

It is called protecting a brand and no one can blame him for wanting to protect it. What happens if he signs a TShirt and it shows up in a porn video being worn by a porn star? It 20-30 years ago when Palmer would sign everything. These guys have to be cautious of social media and other things that can happen over the World Wide Web with the things they sign.

Kudos to Spieth.

Well if he's merely protecting his brand then I have even less respect for him.

You must be one of the Autograph hounds that no one like at a golf tourney.

I am sure Jordan cares about what you think of him.

Go push another kid down why don't you?

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

We call them scum, yet we have autographed photos, flags, jerseys, etc. hanging on our walls. Seems we live in glass houses!

I don't. I've always thought autographs that weren't personally given to someone from that famous person were as good as fakes. If it didn't mean something to me from a sentimental value standpoint then it isn't worth a dime to me. Autographs that are just bought in my opinion are as worthless as can be to me.

There's a lot of people that feel exactly like you...then there's a charity golf tourney with several autographed items up for silent auction and those same people bid on them.

That's all I'm saying...most of us have something like that--even when we despise the autograph scum!

Feel free to bash me, I have lots of autographs but I've gotten all mine from personal meetings with players. I get flags from majors tournaments that the players have won and ask them if they will sign them for me. Also, I volunteer as a scorer or sign bearer at a PGA tournament, the players usually give a signed ball. Because of this, I have a lot of signed items but I do not, nor will I, resell these.

I understand people may not get my autograph thing, but I'm a fan of the game and respect what these guys can do. Go to my man cave and all of these autographs are up there on display for viewing and discussion. But never would I go to the kids autograph zone and push kids out of the way.

On the flip side, I've seen the guys Spieth is talking about. These guys literally have BOXES of things to get signed. They just camp out in the autograph zone and prepare their materials to be signed as the players come off the course. It's unreal and its abuse of a privilege.

Zach Johnson has the same thought as Jordan. Zach's caddie, Damon, goes down the line looking and then tells Zach who not to sign for. Additionally, if Zach does sign something he will personalize it to make sure they don't get value out of something that could be resold.

...? This is about guys who hang at tournaments with loads of merch to get signed and then sell....Thats the scum spieth mentions. Losers who have nothing better to do than try to profit off a kid half their age. It's pathetic

Spieth has no problem signing for adults who are avid fans and just want his signature for their own novelty.

I don't know why people buy autographs. I thought that they symbolize meeting someone famous, not an important artifact.

That being said, I think the real outrage should be directed at all the independent auto mechanics. I see them all over town. Those scum bags suckling off the hard work of the car makers. People who don't get their cars repaired at the dealer make me sick.

I guess everyone's making money off everyone... It's called a civilization.

  • 2 years later...

Used to work for an NHL team, these same type of guys would line up every single day outside the practice rink and wait for players to leave. When you see the same guys day in and day out doing the same thing you start to learn who they are. Many of them would have no problem blocking out a kid from getting something signed so they can get another piece to sell online for themselves. Most of them were rude pushy a holes to be honest. The players knew who they were and would often avoid them or ignore them, sometimes leading to confrontations like Jordan had. In some cases guys stopped signing all together.

Back in the days of the six team NHL, I was a big fan and always watched Hockey Night in Canada broadcast from Maple Leaf Gardens. My Dad was an Immigration Inspector and he and a partner would often ride the night train from Toronto back to the states to do the inspections before the train reached the border. Every team that played the Saturday night game would be on the train. He managed to get autographs from everybody on all six teams in the league. I had a few sheets of notebook paper with all the big names on it from Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull, Andy Bathgate and one of my personal favorites Eddie Shack of the Maple Leafs. Oddly enough, I have never been an autograph seeker and those sheets of paper are long lost. It was quite a feat getting all of those signatures but I've never been enough of a hero worshiper to stand in line to have somebody sign a hat or something.
