This is an honest equation :

Golf + drinking = cheating

(especially in scrambles)

That’s why there were two teams per group.

I understand that, I didn't say otherwise.

Then what was the purpose of the post? It doesn’t pertain to the OP as he never said anything about cheating. So how was it relevant?

Just a chance to rag on scrambles?

Not that it matters much, but the original post actually does say they went out in big groups to decrease the cheating.

OP stated a 7 hour round...no wonder people were drinking. Can't take 7 hours to play golf seriously...if you do, start drinking.

Everything is good. I once played in and 8some because the course was virtually empty and we thought it would speed things up a little bit. We were wrong in that it actually slowed things down because everybody was confused when it was their turn to hit and it actually took longer. I've heard so many outrageous scores from scrambles foursomes that I almost expect them. Golf is very difficult for many people to be honest at because it is so difficult. When you group some guys together it seems to make it exponentially worse. When you honestly golf well it feels so rewarding.

Just finished up a 7 hour captain's choice tournament. We played in groups of 8 (two foresomes playing together to cut back on the blatant cheating).

Your only option was to drink more. Seven hours of drinking is a lot more fun than seven hours of golf.

This reminds me of a similar event in my younger days. I was invited as a customer to a scramble where I met my teammates. Three hot young babes who could hardly swing a golf club. So we started drinking early and by the ninth hole, we were two holes behind the group in front of us and having a blast. The marshal made us skip two holes, but we didn't care. When you are in your 20s, free alcohol trumps free golf.

What? No strippers?

I usually get invited to several of these a year. Just show up knowing it’s not golf, it’s to have some “fun” and raise money for charity. Ask yourself this. Would you rather be there or work? If it’s work, then next year politely decline.

I’m sure we all have several of those “youthful indiscretions” from our youth that, in hindsight, we’re just glad that we got home from.

Yeah i mean i'm not sure what the "move" is here so to speak. I'm kinda shocked there'd be a big money event going on during a charity event. It doesn't really make sense. I think of charity events and i think of guys getting hammered and having a good time, right or wrong.....So that's not really going to jive with 8'somes and seriousness.

I don't think the move is anything other than just trying to enjoy it and maybe not playing in it next year if it isn't fun

Some friends of mine play in a scramble and get hammered. Last year, they let 3 groups play through them because they're so slow. They often win and are almost a lock to be in the top 3 teams. They have 3 good golfers and their 4th can barely hit the ball. He's in charge of the Fireball.

Playing with 8somes, there is bound to be some bunching up on the golf course and a 5 minute wait isn't that big of a deal.

It was 5 minutes waiting on the tee watching a single golfer to "try" to hit a ball before picking it up an throwing it. The rest of the guys hadn't even hit yet. It was over 10 minutes before we could even tee off. We decided to pack it in after we got to our tee shots and those guys weren't even on the green yet. Needless to say, I won't be back.

For what it's worth, they actually turned in their score of 108 (double bogey max on every hole). I guess they got their money's worth.

Not to be a jerk, but how did these guys get home? Hopefully they were taken of ... I've seen too many times were everybody turns a blind eye and says "not my problem." If you've ever had a loved one hit by a drunk driver and had their life changed forever, you learn it's everybody's problem.

You're not being a jerk...these f*cktwats just get in their cars and drive because they think it's no big deal.

We had a guy in a tournament who drank all day on the course, and way into the night. Apparently, he went to his car to drive home, about 30 miles, passed out after starting the car, and our greenskeeper found him the next morning asleep in his still running car.

Nothing beyond potentially calling for a marshall if people become a danger to others. These charity events, you should know what you're signing up for.

We had a shotgun start once for a semi serious charity tournament (beers on the course but no one was getting blitzed). A couple of holes had 2 groups on the tee at the start and my group was one of them. By the third hole, had a older guy from the group come up to me and complain about the pace and I just nodded. I told one of the guys that'd been around the club way longer than I have (it was my first year as a member) on the next tee and he went back and told the guy where to go and he better not have told his wife he was going to be back home in 2 hrs if he had signed up for the tournament. By that time I think the guy's group had had enough of him too and had told him to zip it or just go home then and there.
