Peter Kessler ok?

So I took a glance at Kessler's Twitter. He does seem quite delusional. "I put the Golf Channel and Sirius XM PGA Tour on the map" and "I invented the hybrid come to mind.

I don't know about the Golf Channel and Sirius XM PGA Tour claims, but I do credit him with inventing, or at least popularizing, the hybrid. His Perfect Club made its inroads into the game via his infomercials and was derided by pros. Yet, it found so much success among amateurs, that conventional OEMs started making and perfecting them. Now, just about every pro carries one. The Perfect Club is a good example of how golf technology often bubbles up from amateurs to pros, not the other way around.

Let's face it, when The Golf Channel first started up, Peter Kessler WAS the Golf Channel.

Yes he was. Had some great interviews on TGC. Too bad he let his ego or self importance get in the way.

No. It had a shorter shaft like an iron. "To get you closer to your work."

The head was larger than your typical hybrid these days but I would not call the original Perfect Club a 7 wood.

  • 1 month later...

I just read Shipnuck's piece on Peter and while it was a cute read it revealed a lot about what makes some talented people hard to employ or endure. The thing with Peter is he got his shot at the big leagues which many folks never do and it appears he agitated the wrong people. It is too bad that things turned out this way and he has ended up apparently desperate but the "talentless" bosses only put up with so much and you find out the hard way that everyone is replaceable. A lot of times it comes down to money but in his case it seems like it was more than that.

I read the piece too. The style of the article was a little annoying and made it hard to determine what was fact or fiction. It was kinda like a poor man's homage to a Dan Jenkins story (RIP). Shipnuck ain't no Jenkins.

Agreed it was a bit confusing and, by the end, pretty sad

Kessler probably would've gotten another job in TV golf had he reached into the back of his closet and put on his humility suit.

Ya he talked in the article about how he’s different now but it didn’t seem like that was true with how he was retelling those stories.

Total lack of self awareness. Delusional. Illusional.

You simply can't tell your bosses to go **** *******. In any line of work. No matter how brilliant you are. Every dunce knows that.

Kessler's problem is that he clearly confused being talented with being irreplaceable. Just because you can do your job better than anyone else in your organization, it doesn't mean that there aren't others who can do your job at level that is perfectly acceptable to senior management. Unfortunately, I've seen people make this exact same mistake far too often.
