TPC Harding Park

Recommended Posts

Not a local, but played it a lot. To answer your questions:

-slowish, but even on the weekends it stays 4.5 hours or so

-is it even a trip to SF without a Lyft/Uber/via?

-there's more than enough trouble to get into, but so long as you drive it decently you shouldn't need more than a sleeve. If you're prone to missing both ways off the tee I might bring the rest of the dozen

I got a tee time @ 130 @ TPC HP this Friday. It's been raining and will rain so I expect muddy condition. First time @ HP. Excited to play like a kid.

Questions for the locals.

- pace of play in Friday afternoon?

- transportation to SFO afterwards. Uber or BART?

- is this course forgiving? How many balls should I bring as 14 hcp?

- If Fri gets sunny, the locals may all come out and it could get slow, but you have about 4h45m of decent light - unless it does cloud over.

- Uber/Lyft to Daly City BART station, and BART the rest of the way

- It's pretty long, the ball won't roll, so get ready for lots of long iron/hybrid approaches, but except for the closing stretch along the lake you really should lose any balls*, as there are lots of parallel holes.

*Unless the rough is getting long due to the rain, then you could lose one that way.

- pace of play in Friday afternoon? With the wet weather, probably a lot of cancellations which will help pace of play.

- transportation to SFO afterwards. Uber or BART? I'd probably Uber or Lyft all the way to SFO.

- is this course forgiving? How many balls should I bring as 14 hcp? Not many places to lose balls - none on front nine, and just a few spots on back nine if you hook it badly.

1) Pace of play in the weather we are having will probably be 4.5.

2) Harding Park to SFO is Uber. No real way to get to BART, except with Uber, so might as well just take it all the way.

3) The course is relatively flat and I’d say you wouldn’t lose a lot of balls. You probably have a better chance of losing a ball from plugging in the mud. The only forced carry is #18.

As expected, it was pretty crowded but I managed to finish the round at sunset. It was cold & windy for this So Cal boy. From days of rain, some spots were wet and muddy but overall the course was in good condition.

Definitely, Back 9 was different animal and much better track than the front 9. I don't remember much about front 9 except hole 1 and the long par 5 hole, I do remember almost every hole in back 9 as I enjoyed them so much. One side of the course is lake and the other normal city streets. IMO, the course was flat and easier than expected. It felt like typical muni course with better course management. Overall, I enjoyed the round very much. Yes, green fee is bit expensive for what it is but for an outsider, why not? Most likely I will never get to play there ever again; many other courses to visit in Bay area. One last feedback. The club house is too weak for such renown course.

both drive (lyft) from financial district and to SFO were breeze. nice location.

Well I'm resurrecting this thread because I finally played Harding Park. My first round since December 3rd, cobwebs and generally poor play led to a disappointing 87, which should have been an 80-84 if I could putt and have my tee shot on 16 back.

But really I wanted to play it to see what the fuss was or wasn't about. Is Harding Park overrated/overpriced? At the $145 price point it is. At the $95 rate I paid... it's still overpriced but not that much.

Harding Park seems to answer the guy who always says "Hey if I got to play on conditions like the pros do Id play better too." In general the conditions were excellent. Fairways and roughs were consistent everywhere. Greens perhaps a bit slower than one would want, but imminently fair. The problem is the course is subtle and straightforward to a fault– each hole is a relatively simple corridor consisting of a fairway, some rough, and some Cypress trees... I managed to keep it in the tree corridor on all shots but one. There's elevation, but not a lot. The greens have slope, but not a lot. There's minimal bunkering. Maybe over multiple rounds I'd come to appreciate the subtlety, but at the asking price there won't be many more rounds. (That said the 18th is a great hole, and would be great on any course anywhere)

Presidio is the exact same concept but with (my opinion) much more interesting contour. Bridges has similar conditioning with a bonkers layout (that I think is a lot of fun) but a better price. It all comes down to what you're willing to pay to play an average course with mid-tier private conditions+pedigree.

Thoughts?

Anyone else have any thoughts?  Looking to play here on our next trip to the bay

There are three pages on this thread giving people's thoughts on the course. The reviews are very nixed, with many feeling it's over priced. I enjoyed the course. It's good, but not great. It is expensive though.

I think that sums it up nicely. Decent course, but overpriced for out of towners. Would definitely play Presidio over HP if given a choice.

I agree. Just played it in November. I had a good day out on the course but I think it is overpriced for what you get. Experienced it once unless I become a resident I dont think I will be itching to get back and play there.

Any time your greens fee bumps up against the cost of a new club it's going to be hard not to be disappointed.
