WHICH MIZUNO 919'S??

I AM interested in the miz 919's and wondering about the comparison in flight feel and distance between the HM , TOUR and FORGED. Here is a list of what I played from current to last few years.I like good feel and want higher flight not an overly large head and no dig sole ; I hit down about 3 degrees. My hdcp is 6.4 and am 66 years young. Thanks !!

PXG 0311 XF , PXG 0311 P, EPON 503, PING I200, HONMA 737 P, MIZ 850 FORGED, PING I 25 , TM R11.

the shafts in these irons:

G Loomis tour, recoil 460 esf3, shimada tour lite, Kbs tour 90, amt 2.0, nippon 850h, steelfibre i 95 r, cfs, kbs tour 90

I would look at the Forged or HM Pro, from what you are describing. Try the Mizuno shaft optimizer to narrow down shaft choices/options. ;)

Just got the HM Pro. Less offset that Forged, 5 yards further, these are the daddies in the JPX range, try em out before you buy anything

I dont know much about the HM Pro, but I read what you are looking for and to me it screams Forged. They definitely will get the ball in the air more than the Tour and I think the profile of HM might be a little chunky for someone at your skill.

One thing that makes me not even want to look at the HM Pro is the fact that they aren't forged. Yeah they might be hotter and make the ball fly further, but the point of going Mizuno is for the "Mizuno feel" and you are going to lose out on that without their famous forging process.

Tried a demo HM pro yesterday ; and felt ok but nothing special.rep gave me a Callaway Apex 19 to try next.Better in all respects; feel ; distance; dispersion.Never had Callaway irons but !! Compared it on course yesterday to my pxg's and again a bout 6- 8 yards further ; same or better feel and better height.

I hit the HM Pro's yesterday and the feel was terrible IMO. Very clicky but the ball flew straight and long. I prefer the Tour's but that's almost exclusively for feel. They are easier to hit than I thought they would be but you still need to be finding the center of the face with some speed to get the most out of them.

I'm willing to bet that next year with the 920's, Mizuno will release a "hot faced forged" iron to keep up with the P790, i500 etc.

They half way got there with the more visually appealing HM Pros, but they aren't forged. Maybe next year!

The 919 Forged is a hot face while being a true forging. Get a fitted shaft and go. I ended up going from PX LZ 90 Graphite to reshafting to Accra 80i -- more feel, nice looking shaft, consistent, and can tip to flex.

I can see an HM Pro in the lower irons and then 919F in 5 or 6i-PW. But the Forged launch well in the 5i.

Im talking the high tech clubs, the hollow clubs. The 919 Forged isn't that. Head to head, lofts matching up, there is no way they are flying the same distance.

Mizuno is trying that with the HM, but failed in the feel department. The 919 Forged has the forging, but definitely not the tech.

I have played the 900 forged for the last 2 years. Best set of irons I've ever owned. 6 people from my club have purchased a set after trying mine. Hdcps range from a scratch to a 10. Find the right shaft in the 919 forged and you will not be disappointed.

Typically with mizuno they are about feel and control. Taylormade and Ping are sort of into the distance club thing now. If you matched lofts with i500/790 with 919, the 919 would more than likely come up short due to it being more of a players club versus a distance club. The marketing on a 919 forged is about forgiveness and toe weighting etc. You look at the marketing for 790 and its about speed foam, speed and distance. Sort of the same with i500. Nice looking clubs but if you want control and feel, you would typically go with Mizuno

To the OP I would probably see what your goal is and go that route. You want raw distance i500 in my opinion, just looks nicer than 790. You want more feel and control, 919 Forged.

This is all opinion because I know we'll have exceptions on here saying they can work a 790 better than a 919. Yes there are exceptions, I get it.

I play a blend of the three, so I'll give this a whirl based on the OP's points...

Flight -

Mizuno got this right... They're all great. Even the HM has good flight and spin characteristics. The additional ball speed is really coming from the face technology, and the other club tech keeps launch good even with lowered lofts

Feel / Sound

919T close to perfect. 919F amazing too. HM noticeably trailing the other two. They're good for a distance iron but not in the same league as the others

Distance

Meaningful distance differences based on loft and face flex, but all are playable. Real ball speed jumps between the models. For me it was a bit more than half a club length distance difference number-for-number between T, F, and HM, but that will vary based on your club head speed, AoA, spin loft, so testing will probably prove that out.

For reference, I'm about 4* down and was maybe 82mph mid iron chs when I tested. I deliver too much dynamic loft, but even the Tours didn't balloon for me.

How did you match the lofts? I'm assuming you play forged in 5-7 or something and a HM (pro) in the 4i? Do you have a HM 5i bent to forged 4i loft?

Tour PW-7

Forged 6 & 5

HM 4

I wanted as much distance control as possible up to 150, and then just wanted to extend the rest of the irons out a bit. Above 150 I have side-to-side dispersion issues to struggle with more than anything.

My iron swing speed can dip, so actually extended gaps at the top end means that gaps are still somewhat meaningful even when my swing speed is down. Previously my longer irons would all start to converge in that situation.

The HM I actually had delivered 1* stronger and hard-stepped. I don't ever expect to hit it on the fairway, where I'd use a 19* hybrid instead. More of a links course tee club.

I put the 919F against the HMPro, with the latter having a stronger loft and got identical results. Granted, it was just with the 7-iron, but the shafts, lengths, and balls were the same, as were the numbers. There is probably a hair more forgiveness with the Pro, and of course they lack the forged feel (still nice, though), but the tech in the 919F will still make them a perfect choice for many.

Definitely true. I was sure I'd never move on from the 900F, but the 919F is really fantastic when you get the shaft dialed in. Can't complain about being a club longer and liking the feel, plus the extra meat on the toe really is a benefit for the CG location and launch.
