USGA PR team to Justin Thomas: "We need to talk"

. Dave-

We do not know it all. I surely will never claim I do. It may sound that way as I tend to speak in absolutes. But I never mean there is no other option unless I say that.

The multiple drop thing is still a tv viewer favorite gripe issue.

When I say " cause " I'm thinking what made the subject originally come up? What caused it to enter someone's brain as a possible " issue". It's TV viewer complaints.

Same as some of the other changes. The ball moving on the green free replacement. Viewers complaining.

THats what I mean when I say that a lot of the rules don't hold up to today's tv viewer.

My friend, have you seen this document ? https://www.usga.org...or 2019 (1).pdf

Lol. Yep. Just read some of the reasons on the first rule. " unfair ". " accident". All words from TV viewers call ins.

The first rule is about double hits. When was the last time a anyone SAW a double-hit live on TV, TC Chen? I'm pretty sure that change had nothing to do with TV

I actually think there’s an argument to be made that the double hit and grounding your club in a hazard rule changes were TV related in that they might be designed to combat people that think they saw something on high def super slo-mo. I’ve seen a few people question grains of sand on the sole or whether a chip might have been double hit more than a few times in recent years.

Think of it this way.

If TV never existed. Or let’s say it was a 12 inch black and white screen.

What would the rules look like ? Id wager much much different than they are now.

Yes. Technically so. But " accidental deflections "are covered in 1 and 2 equally . You get my point.

Actually, I don't get your point. You claim that most of the rules changes are caused by TV viewers and their concerns. You point to two rules, neither of which address situations that have been seen on TV for an eternity. There's no way that TV had anything to do with either of these changes.

There you go! That's the root cause for all this consternation. USGA should tell us all the reasons.

Afraid you'll probably have to settle for this :dntknw:

Actually, I like the part where dave asks if you'd really like to see all those "pig parts" that make up the sausage we love !!! :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy:

As dave mentioned a few posts ago, there are a plethora of reasons for the changes. TV is certainly one of them. Will we hear about ALL of them ? Maybe, maybe not. (My guess would be the latter)

But those issues were taken care of before the current set of revisions. First, no more viewer call-ins would be accepted, a decision by the PGA Tour (not the USGA or R&A). Second, the USGA/R&A Decision which eliminated use of video for infractions which couldn't be seen with the naked eye was issued in April, 2017.

Personally, I won't rest until the USGA visits me in person and explains the reasons for each and every change they've made. This seems to be the evolving benchmark.

They also have to agree to make a bunch more changes based solely on my feedback, which I will guarantee to be shallow, uninformed, unenforceable and full of contradictions.

Wait, they'll have to schedule their visit based on YOUR schedule. If you're working that week, you can't possibly spare the time to meet with them. And if you're on holiday, well they can't expect you to take time out of your holiday!. Maybe on the 5th Thursday of a month, next time that happens, you can squeeze them in..

Eh. Yea. I’m that guy. I probably wouldn’t eat the breakfast sausage. Lol. Instead I’d have the ground pork chop they butchered yesterday with a little sage and red pepper .

I even pick kosher all beef dogs that have “no peckers and lips” on the ingredients list. Lmao. I figure. The extra cleaning and blessing can’t hurt. lol

Honest question, to those that are really put-off by JT and Rickie being critical of the rules/acting like children/acting entitiled... Do you guys watch other sports?

Before I get flamed for this I’m NOT approving or supporting anyone’s actions or behaviors. I’m simply asking a question out of curiosity.

I watch other sports. And the stars/coaches arguing is TYPICALLY about the officiating. Not the rules themselves. And then they get fined for it.

And the rules do not change because Bryce Harper thinks it should be illegal to throw him a breaking ball with 2-strikes.

And, the leagues have gotten to a point they realize their game is an entertainment product being played by a completely different class of athlete than any other level, so their rules have been tweaked accordingly.

Still doesn’t eliminate the controversy the way the 2019 rule changes do.

Seems night and day from what’s going on now. Jack & Arnie understood the importance of publicly deferring to the USGA. It’s sort of the opposite of being the USGA being the hero deserve, but not the one we need right now.

Also, the quote, "We realized we weren't bigger than the game (paraphrasing)." must be taken in 1968 context, when they absolutely were not.

It's very interesting that Arnie and Nicklaus (the stars) led the break from the PGA of America for reasons they thought beneficial to the players.

I understand tour pros aren't bigger than the game now, but, as times have changed, it will be interesting to see what the stars of today's game might spearhead following in the footsteps of Arnie and Nicklaus.

What's going on now is NOT night and day different than back then. It is pretty much the same.

Don't hold much hope that today's stars will follow in the footsteps on Arnie and Jack. Mostly because they think their s*** don't stink and that the world revolves around them.

Maybe even more reason for a break, then, if it's the same gig and these guys are such primadonnas, right? Arnie and Nicklaus did it, breaking from the PGA of America, and they were golden gods who would never complain.

I’m not asking you to defend anyone, sir ;)

If so many people think what’s going on with the USGA right now is truly an abortion of the game then I’d imagine it’d be difficult to watch other sports where players bring public disgrace to the game through disrespectful acts - even if it’s directed towards an official it’s disrespectful to the game, it’s whiney and so on.

I grew up playing basketball. I played year round, literally, for many years. Basketball was my first true love and I hardly stomach the game anymore. Flopping, technicals, yelling at refs.. all bad stuff in my opinion.

I’m not ready to defend any of those actions; even if done for entertainment purposes.

The OB Rule change to distance only lasted only one year. When you get the Tufts book, you'll find a short discussion of that.

I don’t see how anyone could glean that from the article. Jack basically said that it was important to treat the USGA as a sacred cow even though they weren’t perfect by any means. Jack & Arnie and their ilk understood that if you undermined the USGA or if you went your own direction as a tour it would hurt the game as a whole. Contrast that with now where many tour pros are actively trying to publicly marginalize the USGA over very minor disagreements.

I’m saying I guarantee the same type minor disagreements were had then. Just that jack had no twitter to stir up a pack of fans with. You can’t tell me that a pair who would help break away from the pga of america and run out a pga commissioner and push for the anchor ban and etc etc would bow and scrape to the USga. Sure they understood their usefulness... as I’m sure JT does. Doesn’t mean they said “ yessir. What ever you say sir. You the boss. “. Lol.

No. It’s the same. Just we don’t know what they said like we do today.

The rest of that quote is the most important point in the article. Jack said they weren’t bigger than the game of golf, and that the USGA effectively IS the game of golf. Jack understood in order to grow the game it was important for the professionals at the highest level to be governed by the same rules & body as the weekend golfer. And that it was therefore important to protect and uphold the USGA publicly. And if you look at today, it shows he was right. All of this sniping in recent years about rules or USO setups, legitimate complaints or not, has clearly hurt the USGA’s standing with average golfers and I don’t see how that’s good for the game.

So rather than change their though process to not kill courses for uso setups. We should just pretend that it’s ok how they operate ? Come on man.

I hate to say it again, but I do believe it’s true. It’s the difference in generations. Jack and Arnie might have said things, but in the end they understood that they themselves were not the end all. There was something bigger than them. That’s often not the case now, the name for this generation should be the “me first”generation, because their viewpoint is “what is best for me” not the overall good.

Ad quite frankly, it’s our fault. We raised them that way. The “children should be seen and not heard”, that has become completely opposite. We’ve engrained in them that thier wishs and desires are first and foremost. Then we’re shocked when they respond that way.

The wife and I have commented several times recently about our 27 year old daughter. She’s a really good kid (or young adult), wife and mother. But there is no doubting that this description fits her to a T. We created it.
