The 80s Song Appreciation Thread

Technically this came out in ‘79 (I think) but not sure if anyone heard before their song about “Our House.” This was an absolute beast of an album and, in fact, we started listening to them less after their big hit, and in our estimate this was the best of the lot.

I don’t know how to embed the video either.

Im pretty fond of that song Computer Love by Zapp and Roger. Only bc i swear every time we found ourselves at the local gentleman's establishment this one blonde girl always danced to it. Soon as it started to play something REALLY good was about to happen...

Other good ones:

Dire Straights- Money for Nothing

Golden Earring- Twilight Zone

Ok! Our House?

Instantly reminds me of playing baseball in middle school and eating pizza. 50 cents a slice!

To embed, just get rid of the "s" in https

I think Making Movies by Dire Straits is one of the most underrated albums of the 80s. Tunnel of Love is arguably my favorite song. The outtro guitar tells a story in and of itself, and I always think of teenage "romances" when I hear it.

And by god the video for Tunnel of Love and Romeo and Juliet off the album scream everything that was not figured out yet in the early days of MTV. Both songs have such obvious video plots if they spent any money on them like videos would soon do thereafter. Both videos are god awful, especially R&J. Seriously - mimes?

Dr., you are killing it right now. I didn’t realize making movies was in 1980. I thought it was 70s. That is truly a great album, and I really enjoyed the next one as well. I could listen to Telegraph Road on repeat for hours.

I saw the Kinks around this time as well, and they were an experience, but I didn’t think they were a great show. Does that make me a bad person?

On the theme of horrible videos for good songs a-la my Dire Straits post above, I present the all-time worst video for a good tune in my opinion - Jim Steinman Bad for Good

You may not remember Steinman as a singer, but you definitely know the songs he wrote for Meat Loaf (entire Bat Out of Hell 1 & 2 Albums) and Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler among others. He turned singer when Meat Loaf had a breakdown in the early 80s. It's a bit harder than it would be later for Meat Loaf when he redid all the songs later. But man, this video is soooooooo bad...

I never confessed to liking this song when it was new, but I challenge you to not get this song stuck in your head.

Good grief man! As much as I hated that song I hated the video even more. Gave me the willies right up there with those H.R. Pufnstuf weirdos. I was Warner Bros. cartoons on Saturday morning or bust!

FYI, Sultans of swing came out in the late 70's on their first album.

Their first hit single "Sultans of Swing", from their self-titled debut album released in 1978, reached the top ten in the US chart.
