These are a much softer feel. There is a million page thread in the balls forum, and there are a lot of comparisons around if you search.

 

They are still a great ball for that cost.

3 Piece is softer, spins less and didn't hold greens as well. Not as long for me either.

The 3 spins just fine, I don’t have issues holding greens. Normally play the Zstar. It’s not as long off the tee for me.

Man, the 3 piece spins more than any ball I've played in the past. Don't have LM numbers. And when I say that, I'm referring to irons and wedges. I can't say they're any shorter than anything else I've hit. But, these things zip back on the greens. It's the damndest thing. It's cool to see. But, not so cool to watch the ball land a yard or so from the pin and have a 30+ foot putt for birdie.

The cover is certainly different between the 4-piece and 3-piece. The 3-piece is a firmer, more durable urethane, which to me doesn't really feel like urethane. The 4-piece cover feels like a prov1

The 4 piece was a firm ball. I'm not sure the exact hardness but they reminded me of an "X" ball. The 3 piece is much softer. Spin is decent enough for most players, certainly more than a Surlyn covered ball. I'm not sure how the 4 and 3 compare in that regard but it's a moot question for most people (like me anyway).

ProV1 is a 3 piece and ProV1X is 4 piece. I don't get the hate either. I find the 3 pc far more durable than the 4 pc and the 3 works just fine for me...especially at $13 a dozen.
