Best Fairway Woods of 2019

Recommended Posts

Think of replacing my beloved 16M2 3 and 5 wood with something new. Hoping to keep the distance/performance with an increase in forgiveness.

Now that the new batch of fairways have been out for a while, I figured I’d ask what everyone has thrown on the bag after testing out the new options.

Are there any consensus winners in this batch? They all look like great options, I just know many of them couldn’t keep up with my M2’s the past few years. I’ve wanted to put a Ping in the bag for a while but just couldn’t give up all those yards. The new g410 LST looks like a contender, possibly the TS2 or F9 as well.

Looking forward to hearing everyone’s experiences!

From my fitting,

1st - m6(liked how it sits behind the ball better)

2nd - TS2, close same shaft(feel was better than anything)

Hope this helps.

I did some initial testing of all the main available options last weekend. They are all very close in terms of performance. Ballspeeds were all identical. Ping was definitely the highest flight. I diskliked the Ping shape however. Srixon was the best looking option and felt really good. The winner for me however was f9. Those rails really do offer something useful that the others don’t have. In all honesty, all the big manufacturers have a great option this year. You can’t make a mistake with any of them. It comes down purely to preference on looks and feel.

I buy every club made and they all are pretty good but I was really surprised by the PXG Gen2, it is the first fairway wood which has a chance of upending my Adams XTD.....It is the only club in my bag that has not been replaced.....ive changed irons about 30 times at least and drivers, a minimum of 40X and if you count shaft changes, a lot more than that. The PXG is small headed which I like but the entire face is forgiving and the spin is super too low, in fact its probably too low for good golfers to employ but for me it just gives me tremendous distance !

For me, as far as looks, feel, sound and performance go it comes down to F9 vs Flash. M5 looks very good but I wasn't a fan of that huge price and the firm "hard" feel off the face.

Haven't tried out TS3 or G410 yet but I really don't like the looks from what I've seen. Never liked Titleist or Ping clubs really, so unless they blow F9 or Flash out of the water with performance (unlikely, these are 3w's after all) I won't even bother.

1) Mizuno ST190 TS (3 wood...I have not hit the glued in 5metal yet)

2) Epic Flash SZ is interchangeable with the ST190 for me in the 3wood in terms of performance. Really awesome fairway, love the entire Flash line

I posted this in the F9 thread a few days ago...

I picked up the F9 Tour fairway after testing it against both of the Epic Flash models, both Titleist TS models, and all the Taylormade stuff. All this was done at GG on GC2. Both objectively and subjectively, it blew everything else away. Granted this was all indoors hitting into a net. After purchase, I hit it off the mats at my local outdoor range (in 30* weather) and liked it, didn't love it. Like a true ho'er of clubs, I put it on the BST thinking I would fall in love with the G410 LST fairway.

Well, I'm glad I didn't get rid of the Cobra. I was able to finally get some semi-agreeable Ohio weather and have now had it on the course twice. She's a keeper.

I bit the bullet, grabbed a new flash SZ. Ebay is running a 15% in app coupon till 7 PM pacific tonight. Will report back once I get it out on the course.

TS3 has been fantastic so far...

Id love to pick up a Tensei pro white 80TX, I think that would be an all world combo!

I have a pro white 70 TX in my 16M2 and it’s awesome. Good chance it ends up in my SZ.

Of the ones I have tried so far:

1a) Cobra F9 Tour (Like the black-matte look, small, heavy head, and thud-y feel, plus rails! This is a tie for me with TS3).

1b) Titleist TS3 (Beautiful club, this is what I have in my bag but I might have to pick up a Cobra Tour for a proper showdown)

2) Callaway Flash SZ (So-so looks, very hot, love the feel on center strikes, couldn't find the right shaft match to really make it consistent)

3) Ping 410 LST (Liked it but feel was loud and harsh and ball flight was fade-y. Regular 410 was same-old and too spinny for me)

4) TaylorMade M5/M6 (Just didn't work for me. Looks good. I just couldn't get any distance.)

I am a high-spin player so I didn't even try some models like TS2, standard F9 or standard Flash. I did try both models of Taylor and Ping.

The only other one I want to try is Mizuno.

So no love at all for the Ping G410 LST? What's wrong with the head shape? Does it not spin considerably less than the regular 410?

Definitely lower launch and lower spin. If that's what you're looking for, and you are already used to the standard grey-matte-turbulator look, then definitely give them a try. I was getting pretty good numbers but they were leaky to the right (probably fixable) and wasn't crazy about the feel or sound (not fixable).

If 410 LST is appealing, also give the Cobra F9 Tour a spin.
