Srixon XV 2017 vs. TP5X

endy

Recommended Posts

I just recently committed myself to the TP5x and am experiencing no issues with the spin control in iron and wedge spin control. I get plenty of spin on partial wedges now, as long as you hit it solid, it’ll perform the way you want it to. I was reluctant to change to the TP5x originally due to the same reasons as mentioned above with unpredictable spin on wedges. I no longer feel it happening anymore.

I will try to make my thoughts short and to the point....

Long time V1X player. ProV's are not the best ball out anymore. The other companies have caught up and offer balls just as good or better at a better price point imho.

I switched to the 17' ZstarXV and love the ball. Truly about the best ball out for me at this time. It is Long off the driver but has the spin between the TP5/TP5X. I honestly go back and forth with the XV and the TP5X. The TP5X just feels better to me with every club. Softer but is longer for me off every club. I will agree with many as the wedge shots at times seem like they just jump/flyer when the lie is clean. After more use with the ball, for me, it just took getting use to bc the ball is going farther. If I am striking the ball well the ball is just better for me than the XV. Both are just great balls and I have not problem gaming either.

this sounds exactly like me - I was a long v1x player...

and I am stuck between these 3 balls

love the softness of the tp's....but I am concerned with distance of the tp5 and the lack of spin on the tp5x vs. the XV

amazing how the tp5x feels softer, yet has less spin than XV to me....

Still stuck.....need higher launch, higher spin and competitive distance

Views?

Thanks

I don’t think the TP5 is 10 yards behind either of those to be completely honest.

XV should actually launch higher with your irons than the TP5 as well.

But if you’re still looking for higher launch, higher spin, good distance and soft feel than you need to check out the Snell MTB; it’s all of those and one of the “grabbiest” balls around the green.

It would probably suit you extremely well. Two other balls you should check out are the regular Z-Stars and the latest iteration of the Chrome soft.

XV beats the Bridgestone, pro v 1x, TP5X. I’ve tested against all. XV is longer, feel all about the same. But XV also stops quicker on all wedge shots no matter the distance. Just my observations.

Driver: TM M1
3 Wood: TM M1
Irons: Cobra King 3-PW, Tour Trusty GW, PM Grind LW (Also have a set of Srixon 545's 3-PW)
Ball: Srixon Z star, CS, Q Star, Project A
Putter: Metal X #7
Bag: Sun Mountain C130 Stand

I agree, don't get me wrong

The length off driver is excellent, wind excellent, wedge shots excellent

my issue, as a low launch/spin iron player, is height 'assistance' on iron shots - balls with a little more spin can help - find tp5 is noticeably better for flight for instance

Am i imagining that ?

thanks

Everybody has a different opinion of what makes up their ideal ball. Every ball is long. I look for three things:

1) Feel. I’m not super picky, I just HATE anything that has a harsh feel (ie:anything Callaway pre Chrome Soft). So it’s not the most important thing, but it can immediately rule a ball out.

2) Half Wedge/Pitch Shot Performance. Looking for the lowest launch and highest spin rates.

3) Consistency. Spin rates and flight on mishits, is it predictable, etc.

Tp5x is great off the driver....but a little less controllable with irons and wedges - think low spin causes issues

Nice to putt with as well

Tp5 better dispersion and accuracy off irons, but concern is 10 yards lose on distance offf tee...feels like that...

Xv great off tee....little hard off irons and wedges

Stuck...help?

Are you playing the 2017 XV? I find it firm but not like the 2015. the newer version is wonderful tee to green for me.

yes

love it as well

just looking for a little more spin off irons that doesn't remove distance or wind management.....tp5 close, but no cigar...

tp5x just doesn't spin enough overall for me

none of these comments are with respect to the wedge

Tried 3 dozens of the TP5x and 3 dozen of the Srixons XV over the last 5 months and my thoughts are:

TP5x

-softer of putter face (this is what initially had my interest)

-More spin with short irons (ball spins back about 5’ with full 9iron)

-higher trajectory with long irons and driver (didn’t care for this or really need it)

-Scuffs easy and loses color quick (really annoys me)

-checks nice for green side chips (have read different experiences and can’t relate)

-worried they are going to change the name again (penta, tp red, lethal, tp5x, ?)

XV

-More firm off putter face (soft putter face balances this out nicely)

-Less spin on shorter irons (ball sticks lick Velcro with 9iron which is great when playing soft greens)

-medium trajectory off driver with it slightly increasing with long irons (great for wind)

-Super durable and holds color for all 9 holes without scuffing or losing performance

-checks nice for green side chips (‘17 version is much improved over ‘15 version)

-Name has remained unchanged (no second guessing if I have the x or non-x)

The TP5x is a great ball however it just doesn’t tick all the check marks off the box. I think they are close and seeing how relentless they are with making improvements every year, it wouldn’t surprise me to see or hear rumors of TM issuing a new ball next year.

The XV is consistent from tee to green and something I can rely on. Sure the TP5x may have more wins this year but that’s not my debate at all. The XV has come a long way and ticks all the checks marks and performs consistently for me to enjoy each round.

Srixon XV is my choice!

Finally played the TP5X today that I found a while back. It was mint so like new. Played about 13 holes and it was very impressive. Not better than the XV but not less of a performer either. The XV is cheaper and if you buy 3 get 1 free it’s really no contest. XV FTW!!

Just bought a bunch of VX based on this thread as I don't think the ball affects my score that much once I'm used to it. That said, I was playing a TP5x and it has noticeably more spin and green holding capability. TP5x is softer off the irons but not the driver or putter. VX spins less off everything and great with the driver. I clock at under 100 but must get beyond that at times on the course. I suspect I don't like it as much as the TP5x but will grow into it. I don't practice and play once or twice a week in northern IL so reduced spin is not always bad. It will actually give more consistent distances on chips and pitches. Will just have to open the lob wedge more if it's tight.

Have been playing the TP5x lately as a test. Funny how so many can find the same problems: I get flyers on short iron shots, and the durability is pretty bad. The flyers really bug me - it’s annoying taking out my trusty 110 yard wedge and having a low-spin high sailer fly ten yards past the flag... but only sometimes, like when you’ve got a ball in the rough.

I’ve actually found it a little odd actually: I’ve never had that happen with any other ball.

The XV continues to be my favourite ball ever. But I use Cut Blues unless I find the XV on sale.

I find it can happen with any ball that has enhanced spin. It's why they are called flyers. Grass from rough or too fat a hit will take more spin off a spinny ball. It's why I said the VX will be more consistent on chips and pitches, the spin doesn't change as much if you get steep or take some grass. It's also why I'm OK with the VX. it spins enough to hold a green while not as critical of differences in contact in the short game. I played the TP5x for 2 years and didn't notice any greater propensity for flyers than other high spin balls.

Walmart here in Tampa shows 6 boxes in stock, just went at lunch and they couldn't find em anywhere. Wasn't a complete waste of a trip though, in the clearance section I picked up 3 dozen Strata Smash's for the wife and 7 TM burner gloves in my size, all for less than $30 out the door. Gloves will be perfect for practice so I don't keep destroying my nicer gloves.
