What's more impressive, shooting your age at 65 or 85?

Geez...I'm gonna need to live to 105 to have a chance with this shooting your age thing.

Well, only a couple more years then!

It's Tuesday. We're going to Denny's to celebrate with 2 for 1 brandy manhattan's and the meat loaf platter. How jealous are you?

4:00? Early bird special, right?

65 is harder. No doubt. I bet very few of the those who shot their age at 85 ever came close to 65.

85 doesn't seem a big deal if its in your wheel house.... guy above says 85 year old friend shot that all summer.

65 is a big deal even if you've done it before.....no one is shooting 65 all summer even if you make a dream team of top 20 PGA players in history and you got to pick who was playin that day!

Can't figure how to like my own posts

Probably 85 because most US males are lucky to even be alive at 85, let alone able to move their bodies enough to shoot in the 80's, even from senior tees. 65 at 65 is still impressive, but I can easily see a guy like Phil shooting a random 65 some day at that age.

I mean come on. This isn't a thread about PGA tour guys doing it. You chose phil and he's 48 or 49 so you're predicting in 16 or 17 years he'll be able to rip a 65 off every once in a while. Gary Player is 83 today and that guy will shoot 83 every day of the week and if he's still alive at 85 he'll do it then too. 85 is so much easier it isn't close.

Ha. I will be 67 soon. I’ll shoot my age for sure this year.

On a par 64 course I play.

Time for my meds. They are trying to cure my lame sense of humor but so far it’s not working.

85 is so much easier it's not funny. 85 is the new 75. I see 80 year olds carrying sometimes!!!

Even as a barely + college player I never shot 65 in an event or fun round

Low 80's from short tees is quite doable

I tell what I was impressed by years back ... a 72 year old playing against me off the front tees and dropping a 71 on me in N. Myrtle Beach. He did admit he was a 1 off the whites before we teed off. I played from 67 or 6800 and my 75 or 76 felt like a 90. This guy never missed a fairway and hit his 7 wood and 9 wood and hybrids like lazers

There's a 75 year old gentleman I get paired up with a couple of times a summer. He regularly shoots in the mid 70's from the blue tees (6.500 yards), hits it in the 250 range off the tee and is the nicest guy imaginable. We played last summer and he shot 73, obviously cleaned my clock, and then he went to the range after the round because he was disappointed in his iron play. Walks every round with a ClicGear.

i'm not selling my timeshare on "65 is easier" island yet. It's obviously a great score but man, 85 is really getting up there. There's a big difference between 65 and 75, and a bigger one between 75 and 85. Life expectancy in Canada and the US doesn't even come within 3 years of it. I'm sure there are guys doing it but there's also definitely 65 years olds shooting 65

If you're alive at 85, you are already ahead of the curve!

I love the most guys are dead by 85 argument here. No kidding. That wasn't the question. The questions was is it harder to shoot your age at 65 or 85. It goes without question there will be much more 65 year olds than 85's but that wasn't the question. If Jeff from Montreal here is scratch at say 35 years old I'm assuming he will be a very good golfer at 65 still but he isn't shooting 65 at 35 and he damn well isn't shooting it at 65. However if Jeff is still playing golf at 85 and he is still healthy, big ifs, he will be shooting his age. This isn't rocket science it's common sense. If you can't shoot 65 at 25 you're not shooting it at 65 believe me. Shooting 85 is making 5 pars.

One would need an MRI of both golfers to determine which event was most impressive.

Their comparative times in the mile run would be another factor.

I like the way you say 65 at 65 is still impressive and then name one of the best players of all time as an example of someone you expect to be able to do it. My expectation is that there are a whole lot more 85 year olds shooting their age than 65 year olds. I know plenty of 80 year olds who play still. I know a few 85 year olds too. Not sure any of them are shooting under their age, but they were never that good to begin with. I would expect most clubs have members who can shoot their age at 85. Very few where 65 year olds do it.

65 by far.

I play occasionally with the nicest old gentleman I've ever had the pleasure to meet, he's just about to turn 90 as we are throwing him a surprise party at the clubhouse in a few weeks. He has a medical pass for a buggy over winter periods (UK) as he plays in the sat and sunday comp every week without fail and again in the midweek comp plus a fiddle arranged by the pensioners.

He plays off 12 and regularly shoots low 80's, maybe he just makes it look that easy for his age it doesn't seem as great as the 65 at 65 does.

I'd honestly take his putting game if I could, he's like Jack. Holes crazy putts week in week out like it's nothing and never misses a thing sub 6 foot. His short game is bewildering, doesn't look fancy but the things he can do with a bump and run is nothing short of amazing as he's had about 75 years of practice.

Saw a really interesting Quora question that I thought I would bring here, because there is no right answer!

So which is it, 65 or 85?

I'm going with 85. Counting pros, 65s are shot all the time by the old guys, but 85s aren't. Just considering life expectancy, 56% of 65 year olds die before they are 85.

65 and as others have mentioned it's not even close.

And 65s are shot all the time by the old guys ? Really ? Which 65 year old shot 65 ?

Any 85 year old who was a decent (not a Pro) golfer and is still in any sort of golf shape and playing from the appropriate tees can break 85.

The title says "What's more impressive, shooting your age at 65 or 85?"

I'm guessing he meant golfers that are alive.

And see above - know any 65 year olds who HAVE shot 65 ? Names please.

If I am 85 and I am able to finish 18 holes of golf I would have had a fantastic life...so if the score also happens to be an 85, then I declare it the winner no matter what.
