picture in picture "playing through commercials"

This picture in picture "playing through commercials" garbage is the most evil form of advertising that i could imagine. The golf is tiny and no sound. I totally miss everything that happens. I'd rather just watch commercials. I pray they don't make this standard for all tournaments. I have a bad feeling

Really? Seeing SOME action is worse than seeing NO action? I don't mean to be rude, but that makes no sense whatsoever.

unless you're watching on a 75" screen, you're not seeing action. Just a tiny picture. #1 you have no context. Just "while we were away" if there was something worth it. This is just seeing how many people are stupid enough to believe them when they call the pile of chicken s&^t a chicken salad. There are still the same number of proper commercial breaks, then add these in, they've stuck more commercials in and have you cheerleading their move.

It makes no sense to you because you are a willing participant of what is happening and you have no clue of what they are doing. To put it more bluntly, you’re a useful idiot.

Currently they are supposedly giving us the same amount of coverage, maybe even more with the small screen. But how long do you think that will last? It’s all about conditioning the patient. Look at how every sporting event is loaded with meaningless advertising and stats at the bottom of the screen. And any channel has the subtle logo somewhere on the screen at all times. You know where this is going.

I have no issues with commercials if they are not so frequent (say max 10 minutes an hour) and the content in between is of good quality (i.e. not talking heads, commercial plugs and endless 3 foot putts and overhead or leaderboard type shots)

So basically no US network is ever going to not be an issue with you. That's what sucks about it. because I would be in the same boat as you. If they would show golf, it wouldn't be as bad.

Thought just popped into my head: are US broadcasts so bad because the networks don't feel much pressure to put a good product since Beman mandated many years ago a sponsor of a tournament buy a large portion of the ad time for that week or throughout the year? Maybe they've been under the impression they are playing with house money, so....

They do this every tournament now. We have lost

Here, watch this tiny ash bit of golf while we tell you about some other golf tourney where we will repeat the same idiocy!

I didn’t tune in to watch a commercial about golf while you pretend to show the actual golf that I tuned in to watch you buffoons!

I’ve been tearing my hair out!

I think with marketing in general it is a little more complicated and sinister than we would like to believe. The subconscious is fully aware of these products and marketing schemes and they are embedded and consciously or not we are affected to a large degree. To say it doesn't influence a buying decision is hard to tell at times because the marketing has penetrated our minds. If it didn't at some level these corporations would cut their marketing drastically and rely on the quality/ price of their products to influence sales.

The guys at NLU said at the President's Cup, at one point it was 23 minutes of commercials, both playing through and standard, every out. That's almost 40% of the broadcast. How far does this go? Will coverage eventually be just all playing through?

It was so bad during pres cup

I generally feel for the production crew during limited field and match play style events , however it was soo(ooo) excessive. The shots they showed were the one foot tap in's and the timing was opposite of the critical moments/shots. Could not even comprehend the commercial to coverage ratio

To add further pain to this I'm not sure how many times they wanted me to watch the Anusol commercial

If I have that problem I'm going to google it, no need to mass market that solution...

Yes, a big issue with the commercials, other than the fact that they are so frequent and intrusive, is the stuff that's going on when NOT in commercial. This is a problem that is not unique to golf (the coverage of the Olympics, my god), but golf tournament coverage suffers from a serious problem of over-production. Producers feel the need to tell a story rather than just... broadcast the sport. So in between random golf action we're stuck with long shots of talking heads, pre-recorded segments (the most loathsome intrusion) and stale interviews. These networks think we're too stupid to follow along with the sport, so they feel the need to insert a narrative.

This is especially incredible in our 24-hour news cycle, hyper-connected world. You don't need to run the segment you filmed about Tiger's comeback. I know all about it. Instead of blocking out action with the pre-recorded segment, just talk about the incredible comeback over shots of actual golf. We're smart enough to follow along.

The end result is just an awful, disjointed product. Between the frequent commercials and other "stuff", we get random golf action that seems like it comes from left field. Here's Adam Scott in trouble behind a tree... wait what, what hole is he on, how'd he get here, what's going on? Or even worse, the "obvious result" shots. Oh, here's a look from "just earlier" at a seemingly insignificant shot from some golfer that you haven't heard mentioned in three hours. Guess something good happened.

Somebody needs to just rip the whole product apart. Figure out how to present the sport in a way that's actually possible to follow and doesn't treat its viewers like children.

The play through commercials are awful. My wife makes me pause when commercials are on and it feels like there is less golf to watch. There are many reasons why the Masters tournament is so popular with golf fans and the regular public, but the distinct lack of commercials allows the fan to feel involved in the tournament and adds to the enjoyment of it.
