How does eBay make any money on this? If they only take 10% of the sale price, but they're funding a 15% discount?

 

Good question. Clearly they lose on professional seller accounts that have reduced selling fees below 10%. And you may have noticed there are some major categories exempted from this coupon (thankfully not sporting goods).

 

My hunch is that Ebay does these near the end of the quarter to pull sales forward, while deferring the reduced revenue to the next quarter. In other words, more slight of hand in the modern age of finance. But this is merely a guess.
