Pulled grips off some G410's and was surprised to find this? When did they starting making reminder grips using tape?

Seems like a lot of added work for Ping. Can't imagine they are doing this on all clubs instead of just using the Tour Velvets with reminder.

A question on Ping grips: when you order on line you can select the Tour Velvet grip by colour code, same as what Ping used to have for their proprietary grips. Does anyone know if the colour codes represent different grips, or is it all the same grip with different amounts of buildup?

I was wondering the same thing. Just ordered an i500 3i with an "Aqua" tour velvet uninstalled just to see. I'll update when I receive.

I'm almost certain Ping did the build up. The grips came off some G410 irons which were just released, and the grips were Ping branded. I suspect Ping buys the tape/rib from a supplier and just slaps it on. Saves money from having to stock ribbed grips.

I don’t love to know where they get them. I use reminder Tour velvets but I have some iomic I’d like to try but they just feel wrong without reminders after 30 years of using them.

I know Golfworks sells “spines” you can stick on. Might give those a try.

I pulled one of those Golfworks spines off of a shaft pull I'd bought. It felt just like the other ribbed grips that I always use. I'd recommend them, especially if you don't mind using a little extra tape to 'tack' the spine down before gripping.

Hum, didn't know you could buy these ribs separate. The Ping ribs are quite large and create a very noticeable bump in the grip, subjectively more so than a typical reminder grip.

These guys. I’ve never used them but I imagine they’d be fine if you were very careful making them straight. A bit tedious.

I've got the spines on a couple of sets -- works great and you can feel them. Only issue was it made the grips hard to blow on with air since the grip does not form a perfect seal with the shaft.

Ness ~~~ Give Ping a call with the serial numbers. They should be able to tell you exactly how they were built. I'd be interested to hear what they say. Also if they deviate by more than .040" they would be nonconforming.

Every grip installed by PING that I've ever seen AND been fortunate to visit their factory in Phoenix to see first hand... uses 3/4" tape and spiraled around the shaft. Unless they've changed their installation techniques which is quite possible.

GP Tour Velvet grips made for PING are made to size and indicated by the color end cap, just as the PING grips are. If I'd have to guess its possible that GP is just making round grips for PING and now a rib has to be "manufactured" using the strips.

I'm guessing you bought the G410's used? Also, I've never seen this either from Ping having had several sets over the years having regripped them all myself.

Time change gentleman. The grips are Ping 360 ID8 Gold and I'm pretty sure these clubs are dead stock.

I have some G30's with graphite that I regripped, and they had some weird clear tape. I pulled stock Ping grips off, I assume these were factory installs.

Maybe the original purchaser had a preference for that exact grip but likes a rib, and a 360 model isn’t going to come with a rib, so they improvised and delivered. Could be the purchase had the 360 on the woods and wanted the same grip but with a rib. Not too hard to do.

I would bet a Coke that the original buyer asked for the grips in the box and then installed the tape rib.
