WRX Spotlight: True Linkswear: redefining a great walk

Recommended Posts

When it comes to golf footwear, there are a lot of players in the game, but there is only one that is committed to making sure they put their absolute best foot forward with every product, and doing everything it can to make sure you "enjoy the walk."

True Linkswear was founded only 10 years ago in 2009, and in that time the company could be credited at least partially for the popularity of what we have today as the modern spikeless golf shoe. Founded on the principles of creating the most comfortable walking shoe imaginable they did just that with the original True Tour. This shoe offered the thinnest sole in golf and took the golf industry by surprise. It took features from the emerging barefoot running trend at the time and along with it brought the wide natural toebox, zero-drop revolution to the golf masses.

So confident in their crossover ability, on October, 7 2012 , the same day Ryan Moore won the Shriners Hospital for Children Open in Las Vegas wearing the TRUE Sensei, one of TRUEs founders, Rob Rigg, was a lot further north up the West Coast wearing the same Sensei in the Portland Marathon. Not many shoes on the market can lay claim to winning a PGA Tour event and running a marathon in the same day.

Let's fast forward to today, after some serious sole searching (pun completely intended) between 2014-2016, after some admitted less-than-first-rate products, the company went back to the drawing board and completely relaunched.

The goal was to get back to creating the most comfortable shoe with premium products and deliver them to the customer without compromise. True doesn't just want to be your favorite golf shoes, they want to be your favorite shoes period. With that in mind, and drawing from their Pacific Northwest home -- a part of the country known more for rain and the great out doors than bright sunny days, they have come out swinging with their most technology packed shoes designed to be comfortable right out of the box -- or out of the bag... more on that later.

The first of these new designs was the "Original" a shoe that took all of the elements from the very first tour and put it into a modern stylized package with the most traction of any True to date, and gave it the on course, off course looks to take your from the range to the streets, to the hiking trails without having to make an extra trip to the trunk.

I had over 40 pairs of the originals and sensei's then the company let Rob go and the designs went downhill fast. I have yet to purchase a new pair but the last designs look great...

40?! From memory they only came in a few colourways, how did you end up with that many pairs? Would love to see a pic of your collection!

I tried some of the older Trues, but the traction failed me on anything remotely wet. Being a huge walker and a believer in minimalist shoes off the course, I decided to give the Outsiders a shot last year. I loved them so much that I know own 2 pairs of the originals, 2 pairs of the Knits and have a pair of the Majors on the way.

I hope they keep producing solid shoes because I haven't found anything that comes close to my enjoyment for these shoes.

I picked up a pair of the Originals last year. The quality of construction is impressive. I thought I would wear them out. Instead they spent the second half of the season in the closet after I found a stray pair of new 2nd generation Tours on the bay and picked up a pair of New Balance minimalist shoes. They simply weren't as comfortable for my giant feet.

I'll always give True a look becaue the first gen Tours are the most comfortable shoes I"ve ever worn -- even if they did appear a bit ridiculous -- but with the narrower width it seems like I'm going to end up as a New Balance guy by default.

Over-rated. Bought the True Tour. As the OP says

"This shoe offered the thinnest sole in golf and took the golf industry by surprise."

Note, it says by surprise, and not by storm. It's not surprising that no-one had done it before because they are awful. Feels like playing golf in flip-flops or barefoot.

I bought a pair of the True Tours near the beginning of the company. I tired them on and off but couldn't get used to the zero drop heel. Then about a year ago I went to play at the Classic Golf Club (one of Ryan Moore's courses) and decided to wear the old Trues for fun. I started wearing them more and more, and now they are my gamers. I just ordered a pair of the Originals because the old Tours are starting to wear down a bit. When I go back to my Foot Joys they now feel somewhat awkward. I find that I have a more balanced swing and better weight transfer when I wear the Trues.

It sounds like Trues are not for you. They are designed to feel like you are playing barefoot.
