Birdie Without Hitting a Blade of Grass

I'm sure this has happened many times but it was the first time I've seen it.

My buddy pushed his drive into a fairway bunker, and then hit his second shot into a green side bunker. He then hit a SW that hit the stick and dropped straight down. Never hit grass once. Actually all three of the shots were poorly hit, but he got a 3 nonetheless. Sometimes things go your way.

That would worth a lot of money in our game. A double sandy, stickie (hole out from outside the length of the flagstick), birdie (worth two for us), greenie, and likely low. A “six bagger”, we’ve never had one of those.

Pardon my ignorance, but what's the "greenie"? I thought it when a player hits the green on a par three, but that doesn't apply here.

When we just have three players we play a points game. We have a greenie on every hole (assuming someone gets a GIR) instread of just on the par threes.

EDIT: I misspoke however, this wouldn’t have been a greenie, he missed the green.

Got it.

You had me wondering if it was a new one for not having to play a shot on the green, for example by chipping in.

I would guess this specific scenario is quite rare, but I can think of a few other ways for it to occur.

1. Dunking tee shot on par 3

2. Par 3 approach into bunker and dunk bunker shot

3. Par 4 dunked HIO

4. Dunk approach from fairway bunker par 4

5. Dunk approach from fairway bunker par 5

I could go on but you get the picture. I’d say 1, 2, and 4 are somewhat “common “, or better put they aren’t unheard of. And 1, 4 and 5 aren’t birdies so maybe the “no grass birdie “ specifically is very rare.

Your scenario is probably more unheard of than each of these.

Now that you pointed those out, I recall seeing something equally as rare many years ago. Like Fred Couples, my friend hit a Par 3 tee shot OB. Reloaded and dunked the shot for a par. That was one bad shot and one great shot. This time it was 3 bad shots that ended up as a birdie. Both pretty fun to watch.

We would have to consult the competition committee (which is one guy that runs our game) to figure out how calculate that one.

That is a rarity. Don't think I've ever seen it.

I did see an OB and then hole out for a par once...in a tournament actually.

I’m the scorekeeper, so I guess I’m our committe!

I made a hole in one for a par years ago in Phoenix.
