Clubhouse Grille (*** NO LIV DISCUSSIONS ***) (*** NO POLITICS/RELIGION ***)

Recommended Posts

Two Days ago when I started moving around in the morning, the back of my left heel was extreemly sore, thought it could be gout treated it as normal to no avail. Doctors this morning said it looked like torn Achilles’ tendon so Thursday I am having X-ray and ultra sound to properly check it out. Up to six months treatment depending on the severity.

Today it was very hot again, the cooler weather and rain has gone, back to 100+ for the next week. Problem is the air conditioning broke down yesterday, it’s going to be expensive to fix so we are leaving it till later, fans around the house on full bore thankfully it’s expected to cool down by Saturday

Take care Grillers I am off to sleep.

Hope you get good news on your heel. Those injuries can be hard to deal with. Slow to heal because of the lack of blood supply. I had heel and foot pain for almost a year that turned out to be plantar fasciitis. With rest and heel cord stretches and orthotics it finally got better. I try to do those stretches for prevention.

Hope your heel will heal :) Say that three times fast.

Mrs, scotee has had a sore achilles for quite awhile now along with some arthritis in her shoulder. She did some research and is going to Spokane to do stem cell therapy. They are claiming some good outcomes and surprisingly her insurance will pay on this treatment. So often insurance will not cover cutting edge (non-cutting) treatments. She has decided it is worth a “shot” or actually several. They will take a draw from her hip and process the cells and inject into her shoulder and heel. It will take up to a year to see if it is a success. If she can avoid the cutting or even buy some good time it will be worth it.

I heard something earlier today that I haven't heard in a very long time; the sound of a train whistle in the distance. Those familiar three short blasts that would sound when a train was coming up to a level crossing. The thing is that there aren't any train tracks near our place anymore as they were all taken out over twenty years ago as local freight lines were rendered obsolete by the proliferation and cost advantages of truck transport.

Many years ago there was a level crossing on our road to the west of us. I travel that old rail route in the summers via bike as it is part of our regional rail trail system that has been developed for recreational use. The oh so familiar sound of the train whistle off to the west this morning brought memories flooding back of the days of my youth when the local freight run would go through twice a day hauling goods from city factories out to the country and then produce in return.

It must have been a particularly good day for sound to carry as I have no idea where the closest active rail line is now. There maybe some tracks still in use that deadend in a town to the south of us, but that seemed like a bit of a stretch for the sound to carry that far. Perhaps it was just my imagination playing tricks on me... :to_become_senile:

That brings back memories to me too. We could clearly hear the train whistle coming through the town where I grew up. Have not heard it for a long time.

All replies MOST appreciated! Can always count on my Grille buds to come thru. Always learn something,

So the build was done with glue dried Sunday. Last eve my son gave them a test run at the range. The new iron shafts absolutely fixed the constant pushes and fades. He's also happy with his Titleist 915 D2 without any added weight, but is aware of the ability to add it later should he feel the need. FWIW, I liked that driver myself. Not enough to change, but would definitely snag one in hoe mode one day. Thanks again my friends!

That 915 D2 is an excellent driver--- That is my back up to the Homna

Interesting. Been hankering to "upgrade" my driver of late. Now two favorable in-house reports on the 915. Been contemplating trying a D with a ~ 50g shaft, thinking I might be able to pick up a couple mph of ball speed by swinging a lighter shaft. And a head more current may offer a bit more forgiveness (i.e. higher MOI) across the face on less than optimum ball strikes. The 910 can be penal if hit out on the toe (high and toe side being my typical miss).

See a number of 915's on the Bay that are right in my wheelhouse of how much I'd like to spend. Investigating ULW shaft retrofit into the 910 D2 is appx. 50% of the expense of going to a more current model. For an extra $50 -$75, may be more prudent to just upgrade. Been "watching" for a suitable candidate.

Don't know if Titleist are max distance drivers, but they sure like to go straight. Least that's been my experience with the 983, 905, 910 succession. Plus they always feel solid when striking the ball, unlike the current crop of composite head drivers. Of a concern though, incrementalism will not achieve the intended results. That a 915 will not be all that much different that what I already have in the bag. Will have to be one of those "leap of faith" decisions to see if better results can be realized. Not like I'll be able to test one out beforehand.

IDK. Still have plenty of stuff sitting around unused that could be liquidated. With the proceeds reallocated.

My 915 has a 60 gram Diamana shaft in it. Like I said if I did not have the Homna the 915 would be in the bag. I get a little more run out with the Homna maybe 8 yards or so. The 915 does not have a bad feel at all but the Homna is superb.

Thanks Stu for the response. Headed off to the LGS today, needing a couple grips. Kick the tires some, look at the new stuff. In the used rack was a 915 D2, 10.5, 50g, regular flex in the bin. Also grabbed a 917 D2 of essentially the same configuration that was on closeout. Hit them outdoors using Trackman Range to monitor some basic numbers and ball flight patterns. Hit ~ 50 balls between the two.

Was not all that enamored with either. Neither had the solidness of feel that the 910 has. Not sure if the 50g shaft is a good idea. Very erratic with it, slicing to many balls. Granted, haven't been swinging a golf club of late. Was a tad rusty. But after about 15 balls, was loosened up sufficiently. And distance (both carry and total) was short of the current 910. Of which I've benchmarked at the same range. Perhaps spending more time with either, adjusting the hosel to tune in, would improve the results. But they just didn't feel right. I hit enough balls to determine an assessment. The Titleist's are now crossed off the list of potential candidates. Didn't feel like a meaningful improvement was to be realized. I'd rather stay with the 910.

My friend,

I'll take it via bird, marching band, helicopter, cart path, or earthquake- lol. Anything inside that jar is AOK regardless of how it happens.

Also just spent considerable earphone time listening to slack key guitar. I was immediately transported back in time to an LP my dad bought in the 60s. A guy named Jerry Byrd. The album was Hawaiian from start to finish. Pearly Shells and such. So the posts are getting full attention and appreciation.

Grew up hearing trains in the distance - especially in the dense air of cooler nights. It's probably 5-8 miles to tracks from our current home and We can still hear them. It's sort of represents one thing that hasn't changed. My grandparents lived in a place called St. Marys which Sixty and Bill might have heard of. Was a sweet little town BITD. Train ran right through the middle of downtown.

Played Sunday and several of my drives actually checked and backed up a few inches, Indiana clay is awesome. I had played 2 rounds in February with a red Vice ball that I found, and lost it plugged, somewhere in the middle of the 13th fairway. Oh well, I found a warbird, and a perfect V1x looking for it so it's all good. Just being on the course was great.

typical round for me, plus 10 on the front, plus 2 on back. Had 1 triple, 3 doubles on the front, 3 bogies, one bird on the back.

I was trying to quote Bill on this, but something happened, and I had to back his entire post out for it to work.

The dreaded plugged ball. Our attempt at genetically crossing a golf ball with a tulip.

Hey wait a second. I HAVE had a hole-in-one! Bunches of them. :)

Trains are doing huge business in hauling freight; most of it in containers double stacked

on flat cars. Far cheaper than trucking the freight cross country; even counting the truck

cartage to and from the rail yards.

Many trucking companies these days have dedicated fleets that do nothing but haul

those containers to and from consignees/shippers and the various rail yards in geographic

areas. I have friends in the business that do nothing but that so they can stay local and

go home every night.

If you're ever out on the open road you'll probably see a freight train somewhere stacked

to the hilt and a mile long running on tracks not far from the interstate highways.

So, freight trains are booming and have been for a good while now. On the other hand

passenger trains are losers and have to be subsidized by government to stay in business.

Most have disappeared except for in large metro areas where they're used as public

transport and politicians make sure they get enough government funds to stay afloat.

Nothing like watching C-Span and watching senators debate the latest keep Amtrak

alive bill, lol. I think I'd rather watch reruns of the Flintstones.

Agree. Rail is so efficient. All the grain in our area used to go by rail but they have taken out many of the lines and now it goes by truck and barge. My office in the railroad station happened because they took up the rails coming into our town. I don't understand that. I know there are costs of rail maintenance and perhaps a small line doesn't pencil out but it is sad to see them abandoned. There are some great rail to trail bike paths up here where lines have been removed. Those are nice for recreation but don't sustain the economy.

Bring back the caboose! Tarnation and heck fire! Train's last car clears the crossing and I still wonder where that little guy went. Must be Wrigg's fault (lol). He's a tax and finance guy. C'mon Wriggs. Give us back the caboose.

Looked online out of curiosity and wouldn't ya know they're out there for sale.

We have done this 15 mile trail a few times. Most start at the Taft Tunnel in Montana and ride almost 2 miles through the mountain into Idaho and then gently downhill through 11 tunnels and over 9 high trestles. You can catch a shuttle bus at the bottom for a ride back up. It is a spectacular and fairly easy ride.

I looked into buying one to park on the siding next to my RR station. I went to Calif. for a week and when I got back they had taken the rails out. I had wanted them to leave the little section on the backside of the building. I never got my caboose.

I've lived near railroad tracks most of my life. In fact, my house and the whole town is on the Ohio river, and train tracks run parallel to the river. I can hear trains rolling along. Can't say I've heard any whistles lately. Do the railroads still use them? Or are they used just for emergencies?

I don't know why, but when I was a boy, I'd get a thrill out of seeing the occasional steam locomotive, run on coal.

Never had an electric train set, until I was about 30 years old. Bought a cheap Tyco on sale, set it up once or twice, and sold it years later at a garage sale. I had a wind up train with a tiny round metal track when I was 5 or so. It was working when I threw it away in the early 1970's. Probably would be worth big bucks. I also threw away a bunch of toy soldiers after I came back from the Army. Didn't want anything to do with soldiering after that.

PS: Got the original tie order on Tuesday. Sent it back yesterday. Where did it disappear for a week?

Walked 16 holes yesterday. I know that distances suffer with the wet, soggy ground, but my swing speed must be around 80 mph. Getting well under 200 yard drives. I've moved up to the ladies tees on some holes, but, all in all, it's still sobering to lose distance. Drier weather will bring additional yardage, but still. A seven iron wasn't getting to the green from 120 or so. (1976 Karstens)

Spring is almost here.

Will be back when normal service resumes, had the air con technician out today, good he says all fixed, 1 1/2 hours later gone again same fault. Phone them and tell them please fix the fault not the symptom, took a long time to get through to the millennial on the other end. She says, he changes the fuse, but she could not get the fact the fuse was the symptom not the fault. Eventually she agreed somehing is making the fuse blow, he will be out soon and I will demand a refund for the first visit, he noticed a variation in the current to the fuse block but said it was OK. $ 200 for a non fix.

Update after normal service is resumed.

Way down under in (not New Orleans) Australia.

Very cool indeed, scotee! That is so reminiscent of the Kettle Valley Rail Trail in the Okanagan Valley where my son lives. I've hiked stretches of it, but never rode any of it yet. One day I'm going to do that. My BIL and SIL did it last summer riding a 48 km (30 mi.) section of it as there is close to 300 km in total in the entire system that runs from Kelowna down to Okanagan Falls.

A couple of summers ago DW and I rode a section of it in Summerland on the Kettle Valley Steam Railway featuring a restored locomotive and open cars with spectacular views when we stopped on the Trout Creek trestle bridge.

The discussion of railroads has brought back a flood of fond memories of my youth. Just down the street from home was a set of tracks. Part of the Penn Central system as I recall. Ran freight trains and a single car passenger service, between Detroit and points further north on the line. The tracks were appx. a mile from town. They passed through a field area, and an adjacent woods with a small stream. The tracks had a small bridge over the stream, would sit there with feet dangling over the edge. As kids, during the summer months especially, was an area to hang out in. Play at not doing much of anything. Lazing in the fields along the tracks. Playing on the bridge. Putting our ears to the tracks "listening" for an approaching train. Would have contests on who could walk the rail the farthest without loosing balance. Words do not adequately describe the setting or how much fun we had doing nothing in particular alongside the railroad. And periodically a train would come by. Standing 10' from the tracks as it would rumble by. Often getting a blow from the horn by the engineer. In hindsight, was a extraordinary locale for us young kids to play in. As I recall, the only words of warning received from Mom was her saying, "Be careful. Don't get hit by a train". The rail bed is now part of an excellent regional trail system.

About 10 years ago, we took a fall color train trip that was pulled by a steam locomotive. Very cool and was a lot of fun. Traveling to a small community about 30 miles away to participate in an Autumnfest type event at the end of the line. During November and December they have a "Polar Express" type run. We're planning on going this year with the little fella. They use the Pere Marquette 1225 (the type of locomotive used in the movie) for the the express trips. Just waiting until the schedule is posted to buy tickets. It's part of the Steam Railroad Institute, about an hour from home.

There's also the Little River Railroad that runs out of Coldwater, Mi. Little further from home, but could still be done as a day trip. They have runs in the summer months, contemplating doing this as well.

All motivated due to watching steam train YT videos with the little guy. He loves watching them. There's an individual (CoasterFan2105) that has created a series of very high quality videos of steam trains from around the country. He has made 7 or 8 videos called Stream Trains Galore. Think they're very well done. Here's an example:

Edit add: A pic of a 1225 we saw while traveling last summer. A massive amount of steel. The intricacies of the design, all of which had purpose. Amazing piece of machinery.

Do not despair some guys hit the 910 better than they do the 915 for whatever reason. A lot of times or at least for me on these newer drivers you have to tune them to fit you. I messed with that Homna for darn near a year before I got it correct for me. The 915 Bear actually set it for me in a range session and we added 3 grams of lead tape on the sole in the heel and it always has worked for me. I would have to go out to the shop and pull a notebook to see the exact settings. I know I used a protractor and set the Homna exactly like the 915. I do remember the 915 is at A-2

I think I'd rather watch reruns of the Flintstones.

pl

Well at least the Flintstones are more intelligent and make a heck of a lot more sense :taunt: :swoon: You're welcome!!!

Trains, no thanks not any more. We do sometimes go down to Brisbane and that is by train but it’s only because parking for the car is horrendous, expensive and almost non existent after 8.00 am.

We went on holiday to Hamilton island in North Queensland two years ago, for some reason we decided to take the overnight train and then the ferry over to the island, mistake. On the journey back we cancelled the train and caught the plane back to Brisbane. The overnight journey was uncomfortable, seemed to go on for days, and was impossible to get any sleep.

We have been in the old train trips, there were several old steam trains that did a day out trip, it was interesting smelling the fire smoke drifting past and being able to open the windows.

A lady friend of ours travels all over and last year she went to India, the preferred method of travel was by train, Interesting is not the word would use talking about it when she came back. It was one of our planned holidays but we have now changed our mind and do something more comfortable.

Way down under in (not New Orleans) Australia.

Living the dream.

That is why I still hit a fixed head RBZ. I hit draws, fades, pulls, pushes, hooks, slices, and the occasional dead straight ball. Hard to adjust for that.

Well guys , it is now official. We no longer have to be concerned with the first tee of the day. There is no longer any reason for nervous jitters.

Watched a little of the Players today. Just happened to turn it on as El Tigre was walking onto the first tee. I then sat locked to the TV as he proceeded to

get to the 4th hole, before he hit the fairway first. He did get three bounces...two off trees and a third off a lady...and they ended up in the short

grass. But......BUT.... NONE of the first three tee shots got past 200 yards. ! The announcers were sad....I on the other hand was happy.

I actually hit my first three tee shots today farther than Tiger !

Its gonna be a great year !

when you reach a certain level in life, its the little things that count !

Hang in there Wriggs ! We hit it as far off the tee as Woods did today....well...his first three anyway !
