Best Fairway Woods of 2019

I played my first round today with a Cobra F9 standard head 14.5 degree 3 wood. I really hammered it straight and long all 3 times I hit it, two from the deck and once from the tee. One of the easiest to elevate FW clubs I have ever hit. It feels fantastic and it gets up. The rails are a big help off the deck. This is a really nice fairway wood, my first Cobra fairway ever. Impressed.

I'm going to go with TEE CBX for best fairway.

I will say that the Epic Flash sz does look mighty appealing to hit. Guys on TXG were raving about the ballspeeds it was producing for a fairway wood.

I gamed the Epic SZ 13.5* and replaced it with the Epic Flash SZ 13.5*. The Flash has a hotter face and I gained at least 20 yards off the turf. It has lower launch than previous Epic SZ. I also tried the M5 rocket, but the launch was to high for me.

I've hit most of this year's fairways, flash sub zero was by far the best on ball speed and I like the feel. PXG was a good number two. G410 felt the most forgiving by a long way but I couldn't control the spin and they didn't have the LST to try. I think that would be a good head for me.

In a separate session I've hit the ST190 and was putting a good flight on that, dialled down to 14 and really liked the feel.

The TaylorMade fairways both want to go really high this year.

M6 is a winner for me, longest FW I have ever hit. Coming from M2 16 and M2 17, M6 is better in every way to me.

Get fitted, it's key.

What difference in ball speed and spin did you see vs the flash and pxg? Were they the same loft?

Just finished with my first round with M6.

with st180, my carry was around 235-240.

Today, it became 250 average.

Here's what I found;

1. really really easy to hit.

2. long enough

3. fitting is crucial. (shaft is equally important as head I'm)

The Mizuno 3 wood is legit this year. The entire ST line is going to change the way people view Mizuno Woods.

The ST190 driver is hard to beat as well.

Just ordered the Mizuno fairway wood to try. Sure, I could try and find somewhere and get fit, but it isn't the same as trying it on the course. I find that more and more with certain clubs, especially the clubs when you get further away from driver. A 3-wood is such a different club and I've hit some well in fitting balls and struggled on the course. I know what type of shafts fit me and I have a few extra to try. So in this case, I decided it made more sense to just buy and try the Mizuno on the course.

The Mizuno looks great and has a deep face, which I like cause I hit fairway wood off the tee a lot. The Mizuno doesn't have to hang mph for mph in ball speed with other woods (although I think it can), just needs to be consistent. I had a M2 tour and liked that except felt it wasn't forgiving enough. I'm hoping the Mizuno ST190 will be a more forgiving M2 tour.

I'll second the TEE vote as well, honestly a little surprised at the lack of mention of them so far. I picked up a CBX 119 3 wood earlier this year and have been really impressed with it; I had been looking for a slightly deeper face than my Ping G 3w and Iove how it frames the ball at address. Feel off the face has been great and HZDRUS Smoke shaft seems to pair really well with it. If you're testing fairway woods I would definitely recommend giving the Tour Edge lineup a shot.

I usually pick up a Mizuno wood in the shop, look at it at address and don’t think much of it. Also in the past I didn’t like the sound or feel much.

As soon as I picked up the 190 Driver, it look great at address. Then a couple swings and I could tell this thing was different. It just suited my eye (always played Titleist drivers). Then I thought when I hit it it would sound like older Mizzy drivers and not have a good feel. Ummmm nope. Sound and feel are the best I’ve felt since the 910... In fact, better.

Mizuno will have a big problem with lack of demos and ability to fit shafts for their regular fairway. I was really interested in the non tour Mizuno, but in the end since I was not able to hit them or try different shafts I passed.

Ended up comparing the M6, PXG, and Epic Flash three woods on Trackman indoors. The PXG looked very small and shallow, but felt amazing. Unfortunately off the tee I was catching it high on the face and getting extremely low smash factors. Just too player profile for me.

The M6 was my favorite for looks and felt really nice. Hit it with more of a fade ball flight. The Epic Flash was more of a straight ball flight with a draw here and there. The Flash felt and sounded fantastic and on average was longer in carry. The M6 even though I was hitting a fade had lower spin than the Flash and would roll out and made it a close call. In the end I chose the Flash because of the adjustability, ability to change shafts, and it had the highest smash factor and carry.

Two rounds in and the Epic Flash is probably my second favorite club in my bag. I have a large amount of confidence in it already. Fantastic club. Looking at five woods now. I already bought a TS2 five wood and that was a mistake. It has such a odd shape. I'm not calling it yet, but I think the TS2 is DOA for me. Surprisingly though I will give the M6 five wood the option of besting the Flash five wood, even though my head says to just get another Flash.

What are everyone’s thoughts on Epic Flash vs Flash sub zero ?

Normally the sub zero has much flatter lie angle but this year standard flash lie angle is 56 degrees for 13.5 and 15 degree, 55 lie for sub zero. For those that have hit both what has been difference in spin, distance, and feel? The Rogue 13.5 i currently play actually spun a tiny bit less that Rogue sub zero , same shaft on both, and the face just felt much better and hotter.

I agree with you with the Mizuno. I think custom fittings at other places is where they can make it up. Chances are most people going into Golf Galaxy or PGA Superstore aren't going in looking for Mizuno anyway. They tend to get pushed or want TM or Callaway anyway.

For me, the lack of 80+ gram options for fairway woods among all manufacturers make it difficult for me. That, and a hitting bay just doesn't do it for me when hitting fairway woods. So I really need to find something I like the look of and then just hope a shaft matches up, or a few of the other shafts I have will work. I know what profile of shaft fits me, so I usually can find one fairly quick that will work. I'm not worried if I spin one 200 rpm higher if it performs on the course, but I really need/want to play with hit a few rounds on a golf course.

I went through the same thing this offseason, replacing my 16 M2 3 wood. IMO Srixon is the best looking wood. It just looks mean. That said the F9 is unreal. The rails are unbelievable on the course. Gone are the thinned shots off the deck. And the feel is unreal. I went with the white over the yellow for the matte crown. F9 will be in my bag for some time.

Has anyone been able to compare the ST190 fairway woods versus the F9 woods?

I liked the sound and feel of the F9 3 wood in the store, but I could not hit the Mizuno wood. I have the ST190 driver so I'm leaning towards that for the 3 wood. I liked the F9nl 3 wood better than the F9 driver.

I have had both the F9 3 wood and the ST190 3 wood. I think they are both great 3 woods, but for me the ST190 was much easier to hit of the tee. They were equal off the deck for me and felt very similar. I sold my F9 3wood and I think I am sticking to the ST190. The only thing I liked better about the F9 was the adjustable neck.

Just ordered G410 after my fitting.  I was pretty dead set on getting the LST after returning my previous G400 stretch.  I got rid of the stretch because the huge head size was starting to bother me.  Mentally felt like i had to lift up on my swing.  G410 LST head is definitely smaller and more compact and it was ok to hit during my fitting.  I dunno if it was fatigue during my fitting, but i started to lose confidence and put consistent swings with the LST.  Fitter handed me the standard head with same tour shaft and I was sold, 2-3 swings in.  A lot more forgiving, and so much easier to hit off the deck. Launch and spin numbers were still falling in my wheel house.

I just did a fairway fitting to replace my rogue fairway wood and the TS3 was hands down the best for me.   The feel, trajectory, control and distance was exceptional with the diamana shaft.  Close 2nd was the M5 but honestly it just felt to hard for my liking.   The F9 FW did not perform like my new F9 driver and did not care for the flash at all.  Bad numbers and zero control for me.

Does anyone have any course experience with their 2019 FW of choice? I was fit into Epic Flash but I am not sold on the look and I don't have the confidence looking down at it. I have been a TEE guy for the last few years but being a lefty my choice is limited to the EXS in 15*. I like the look of TS2 and G410 but their LM numbers weren't as promising as Epic Flash but I am more concerned with real course performance. Any updates would be great!

Epic Flash SZ is the best fairway wood I’ve hit on the course. Straight bullets off the tee and deck. I previously gamed the Epic and Rogue SZ.
