How do I keep from peeking?

Recommended Posts

I've recorded myself a few times over the years. I start out with visions in my head of a silky smooth Adam Scott type swing, and then I see the tape, and the tape don't lie...and it's fugly.

I have this nauseating repetitive habit of looking downrange at the shot before the swing is finished.

I've got other issues, but this one seems pretty obvious from the tape.

What say you wrx?

Monte will give you a tongue lashing if he sees this. “Keep your head down” is generally considered a terrible goal by most of this forum.

And...

It looks like I'm starting to stand up and come out of the shot while simultaneously looking down range. It's a thing of beauty really. :bad:

My peeking looks nothing remotely like Stenson or Anika. It's hard to describe and I don't want to post it or my wrx card will be revoked. I've already deleted the evidence from my phone.

My personal rule of self-video.

DO NOT TRY TO DIAGNOSE YOURSELF!!!!!

Many of us can see swing flaws in our own swings. Most of the time the things we pick up on are symptoms, not causes. It takes skill and experience to determine the basic cause of a problem, and to determine the most effective change to be made right now. Get some help from a competent instructor, then use the video to watch for specific things that he tells you to watch for.

I try to see the ground underneath the ball after it’s gone. My head will turn slightly with my body and come up but my eyeballs will rotate as well and maintain focus on where the ball was so I don’t have that extreme movement of coming up and peeking. Just a slight rotation following my body with my focus on the former ball position keeping it in check.

I find it’s more important to keep my head down more the shorter the shot gets. So when I chip or pitch I try to look at where the ball was until after it lands. I literally tell myself before I chip “don’t look until you hear the ball land.”

As the swing gets longer, I try to make sure I see the contact or the grass under the ball. Then I look at the flight of the ball (I suppose you probably need decent enough swing awareness to be able to pick the ball up in the air after it’s in flight so might not be the best idea for golfer who can’t really feel where the ball is going at or before impact)

I think EE guys will know exactly why your are rising up through impact. You can't just keep your head down. Your motion will never allow it. I've tried it before where the head stays in place but the body rises up anyway. It's a very conscious change and for me was one of the last parts of the EE habits I got rid of (I'm sure that are still small ones but I like to think I've gotten rid of the big ones lol).

And yeah, find a coach who will help you out. It's too time consuming and full of risks doing it yourself.

Right eye under left eye is the correct way to "peek."

If you turn your head where the right eye moves level to the left that is a bad peek.

I recommend getting a mri but don't have a radiologist interpret it. You should just look at it and figure out what is wrong....

Sarcasm aside just do as DaveP said don't look at yourself on video.

Actually I do have a bad back and have been for many MRI's etc. In my honest analysis of my golf swing or lack thereof, I believe my body is making wild corrections to prevent me from hurting my back further. I might never get to a swing where I'm not making wild compensations and it's hard to accept. I don't want to give up on finding a swing that will take me into my 70's and hopefully beyond.

Dude you nailed it! I'm doing some research into this now and it's my swing to a T. I have lower back flexibility issues so that might be a contributing factor to EE. I've never thought to look into this before. It's not the only issue I have for sure, but from what I'm reading it's near impossible to get into a good position if you EE! Thanks for pointing me in this direction.

This is yet another good reason to find a good instructor. A good instructor may be able to work through some "compensations" with you to find the moves that you CAN do and CAN repeat, even with your limitations. The best time to work on building your swing for the future is right now.

Its quite natural to look at what you're trying to hit, in this case the ball, but it is absolutely not necessary.  I've never actually seen the ball struck since my focus is on swinging the club to the target, not the ball.  As Richie pointed out, Sorenstam and Duval did quite well not staring at the ball.  Probably helped them get the right side through the ball and made them better.  We don't all need to look like Adam Scott.
