Maltby TS2

Trying to stay loose for the Pinehurst trip. I forget how solid the KE4 club line was. This one lives on the tug boat trying to hit a dozen or so balls a day till Wednesday when I get home bbc4c1ab0cef2c1ec74b9bb1140aa2d0.jpgce144b0f02905204758463ef1f331838.jpg

Great clubs. Had a set. NOTHING wrong with them. Just had to have something new. Really good stick.
I sold quite a few sets. People always loved them.

Good iron, solid forgiveness, blah feel. Played the black finish version for a year + with good results. I like the external screw weight for a clean way to adjust SW.

Popeye. Is that a Xcaliber Tour X shaft you have in the KE4? Always wanted to build out a set with those. No idea how they played, but thought they were uniquely cool looking. Certainly distinctive. Only experience with AXE was a hybrid shaft in an old S.E. QS 4 23*.

Yeah, I'm aware that Xcaliber is trying to come back to life. But they're website is currently down, not a good sign.

As for Xcaliber,,, well he put someone in charge of day to day operations but God only knows what's going on now. I did recently talk with that person and they were excited about moving forward and actually needed to order more stock as sales were picking up.

As for how the Tour X shafts played they were excellent. Out of the three weights I liked the feel of the 95s but the performance of the 85s were solid. Did everything you needed but lacked a bit of feel.

I recently have been experimenting with the Paderson TS series shafts and they play just as well, are longer and have feel. I know feel is subjective but they are in a back up set of MMB Black heads. They are so long in fact that they almost keep up with the TS-1s. I need to take them out on course and do some shot by shot testing but if you need a boost for distance,, might not be a bad place to start.

If Xcaliber doesnt survive it's not for a lack of people like myself trying to help him out.

I have been reading and following this thread for a few months. I too am a huge Maltby fan and have played almost exclusively their equipment for more than 15 years. Most recently in irons I have gamed the TE's, MMB 17,KE 4s, DBM, and am currently switching back and forth and mixing and matching between the PTM 6-gap shafted with Steel Fiber FC 90 S and the TS1 6-gap Shafted with the DG Xp100 S complimented with the FGT wedges in 52 and 56 shafted with the DG Xp100's tipped at 8 iron flex. I also carry the KE 4 tour TC hybrids in 22 and 25 shafted with the FC 90 S and the ST-f fairway woods in a 5 and 3 shafted with the X caliber pro fw in S and the moment XII putter.

The only non maltby cub in my bag is a 2016 M2 driver with the stock S shaft cut down to 44-1/2 " with the 10 gram weight to get SW to D-2. Popeye I have agreed with most of your comments about this equipment but am perhaps more in agreement with you about the old CT 250 driver. That head was awesome and to this day is to me the best driver I have EVER hit.I still have a 10-1/2 and a 9-1/2 that I bring out of hibernation every now and then. I am literally drooling over the new ISO-T driver and if it is anywhere close to as good , it will be the BOMB !

It is just amazing to me that my golfing buddies continue to play the increasingly overpriced OEM equipment and frankly scoff at what is in my bag. I just laugh.

I do have one close friend that has seen the light and is currently playing the TS-2 . He also has a CT- 250 that I put together for him back in 2009 that is his go to driver for tournaments or big money game.Gosh this is fun stuff!

Welcome, golfer1954!

For those hitting the TS-2s, is anyone finding their spin numbers to be lower? I'm finding my 8 iron spin numbers to be something I would expect more from a 5- or 6-iron.

I’ve had no issues with low spin and still regularly back up short irons.

The only time I was seeing a lack of spin on a launch monitor is hitting one low on the face of the club but that will happen with any club. Not on a mat but out on course spin was just right. In testing I have found the TS-2 to have a good 600-700 rpm more spin than a P790.

With the noted better stability and general straightness of the TS-2 I was looking at the specs between that and the TS-1 for clues to the differences. A simple look at the higher MOI gives a big clue as to why that is so. With the longer blade length, higher toe and wider sole, it really makes a big difference between the two.

Now when I say it's a big difference it's not monumental but its noticeable for sure. I'm still not 100% sure the split set will remain in the bag because I still have yet to play a round with it. Hopefully I'm not kicking myself next week for changing what was working extremely well.

Tell me more about the new hybrids. I have a 22 degree KE-4 tour that I have had longer than any club in my bag. The new ones are better? I too have played MANY Maltby products and like them. The CT250 was a great seller for me and was way ahead of everything in its time.

Flicked through the whole thread - can someone post a couple comparisons 9/P/G TS-1 and TS-2? Are the TS-2 wedges still filled and the TS-1 are stamp forged? Its unclear from the golfworks descriptions...
I dont have any pics on my phone but I can post some later in the week.

Both the TS-1 and 2 are polymer filled up to the 9 iron. Pw and Gw are not. The forging process is a true 5 step forging and they are made from 3 pieces. Its not a cheap construction process.

very interested in the TS2 to replace my DBM's. just wondering if anyone has tried these with the Maltby Pro Series MPF graphite shafts? anyone tried those shafts in any head and can give impressions of the shaft. currently using True Temper Dynalite Gold XP's in a stiff flex. I am just looking for something a little more forgiving on the hands. Still swinging the same speed as ever - 105mph with the Driver and around 88mph on the 7 iron.

I have the 22 and 25 degree. For me the best thing about the new TC hybrid is the feel. The scalloped crown frames the ball up very nicely and the finish is outstanding. Upon contact there is this distinctive click but the face feels soft. I'm not sure they are any longer than the Ke-4 tour, but they fill the need for me as a replacement for a 4 or 5 iron.

Finally had weather to play.  Problem was- GOLF practice for my team.   Did hit my #6 iron  TS-2--once-- smooth and very good ball flight.

#8 iron once-- slight early release-- good distance..   Chunky 9 iron--  bad swing.   I get to play a round tomorrow and several over spring break.  Looking forward to first round of the year with new irons.   I also had one swing with my new..to ME... Cobra F-8+.   I put a Harrison Mugen Black in it.    VERY promising ball flight-- great feel.  Once again a smooth KICK from the Mugen.   Looking forward to putting this to work.

Coaching really hampers playing.   Really don't pick a club up except to demonstrate.

Just back from the range with the TS2/TS1irons.

The TS1s are a better fit for me with the turf interaction and I love the feel of the 9 and PW-Wow!

I’ll be selling the TS2 heads and filling out the set with TS1s.

Great thread!

Two rounds in with irons. Very happy.. Distance. Jury still out. Played one day in wind and another on the coast. Definitely not short. FWIW- Just coming off shoulder replacement and getting back into playing. Played with my son yesterday. Shot a 39 with two OB balls. PLEASED. Easy course, but still very happy with the irons. A couple chips with the PW/GW -- very nice around the green and on approach shots. Stuffed a PW on Friday to two feet from 115 into a stiff wind. Played like a 130 ish yd shot. Very nice. Yesterday had a 5 iron lay up on a par 5 where I had no angle. Smooth swing and really accurate.. I am very happy I went with the TS-2 5-8 iron. I was worried the topline would bother me... NOPE. I was able to hit a rope hook with the 6 iron on Friday around trees. Very workable..

Verdict is that this line of clubs may end up a bit like the TE forged. Just a classic playable iron that is as good as anything on the market..

I have that shaft in a 22° Hybrid and I am very happy with the setup. Feel and feedback through the shaft is good, if not great. Holds up to a very aggressive move through the ball and its consistency is right where you want it. I was quite surprise how well it worked. When i first built it i built it longer that what a normal hybrid length would have been.. trying to get a little more distance out of it. Club was all over the place. Cut it down to a 4 iron length and it made the club come alive. Great shaft for the money. My swing speed is just a little stronger than yours.

So I am back home after my trip of a lifetime to Pinehurst. I brought the mixed bag and I certainly have mixed feelings after the tournament. Conditions on the courses were definitely preseason with the grass still dormant. The fairways were flat with the grass being matted down, below there was a wet sandy turf. Conditions on course 1,6 and 4 were pretty much the same. #2 actually had some sort of grass to hit off of but far, far from ideal.. Plus on Tuesday and Wednesday the wind was 20+ mph and high 30s at tee time The TS-2s did everything well. I was able to get the club through the turf and tight lies,, hitting quite a few lasers into the greens. On #2 I had the 5 or 6 in my hands on a LOT of holes. Even hitting drives in the 270-280 range.. I had with me the 5,6 and GW.

Now,,,,, I really struggled with the TS-1s. I couldn't get through the turf as cleanly as the TS-2s. Even though there isn't a big difference in the sole width it made a big difference in very difficult lies. I did better on #2 with the hint of grass on the fairways but having struggled for 3 days I had it in my head on every shot. The struggle was real.

Truthfully I brought the wrong clubs. Had I known the conditions I would have brought all TS-2s. Maybe in better conditions I would not have struggled. But I also know if I had a full bag of the TS-2s it would have been a lot different. The extra forgiveness really showed in horrendous conditions.

I made a full set of TS-2s with SteelFibers and so far I’m enjoying them. Forgiving on mishits, good dispersion and feel great. I still have my demo TS-1 8-iron head that I was trying out before I decided to go all TS-2. I hit a couple of knock down shots through the wind and a couple of towering shots over trees, they’re that workable for me.

I will be switching back to an all TS-2 bag. I have a set of MMB Blacks that will give me my blade iron fix when the season is in full and the fairways have grown in. I just didn't see any advantage to the mixed bag and actually struggled with the super tight lies. The TS-2 did everything that i needed and did it extremely well.

I made the 6iron TS1 and TS2 to demo. I am going from DBM and need something more forgiving in 6/5iron. I decided on TS1, have the rest of the set ordered. For some reason the shape of the TS2 just didn't work for me, had a hard time making good contact with it, my miss is heel side and I could not get impact out of the heel with TS2. TS1 suits my eye much better with the thinner top line, but it's certainly my swings faults that I couldn't get TS2 to work. Also, I'm hitting TS1 6iron much better than the 6iron DBM.

Doing a 1/4" progression, my attempt at in between single length and standard progressive irons.

1. D 9.5* 45.25" D3

2. 3W 43 D5

3. 5W 19.5* 41" D7

4. DI 19.5* 38" D2.5 (Cobra ForgeTec One length DI)

5. 5I 24* (25) 37.75" D2.75

6. 6I 28* (28.5) 37.5" D3 ->2.25" tip trim

7. 7I 32* 37.25" D3.25

8. 8I 36* 37" D3.5

9. 9I 40.5* 36.75" D3.75

10. P 45* 36.5" D4

11. G 49.5* 36.25" D4.25

12. S 54* 36" 4.5

13. L 58.5* 35.75" D5

14. P

Recoil 660 Regular Flex shafts. Going to try the FGT wedge in 52 bent to 54*.

I am playing the combo set. Had three more rounds with them. My set is TS-2 5-6-7-8, TS-1- 9, PW, GW

So far no complaints. Solid. I may end up with a #9 iron and PW in TS-2 as I have a few shafts left. Used the Recoil 680.. in F-4

Observations are that both models give feedback on toe hits, but still perform. Wonderful feel and trajectory. I actually started to hit the ball well enough to judge. Really like the PW and GW on approach shots. Long irons are the first to leave and last to come back for me in regard to being able to hit them. That being said, I hit several real nice approach shots with the 5 and 6 irons.. they are very forgiving. I even hit three escape shots from trees with the #5 iron and it was great in that regard. I could hood it and bend it rather well.

I've read through this entire thread and am intrigued. I'd like to put together a test 7 iron TS-2. I know the top line on the TS-2 is thicker, but aside from that, how does it compare in terms of overall size and sole width to a Srixon Z565?

Also, wanted to try the Score shaft. Recommended tip trim for a 7 iron is 2.5" for R and 4" for S. If the Score plays a touch soft, how much would you recommend I tip trim to get the flex comparable to a KBS Tour R (110g)?

The comparison to the 565 would be fairly close in most aspects. They have the same type of sole being a V type. Overall size should also be very close. It's been quite a while since I had both in hand at the same time.

The Score shaft will have a much smoother feel to it, maybe more lively. I have hit the Tour 105 in S and then a Score LT in S back to back and it's two totally different feels. Off the top of my head I would say to tip trim them an extra 1/4", to get them to feel more in line with each other...but it's something you would really have to tinker with. Those shafts are so inexpensive that you can probably buy 4 for the price of 1 KBS.

Popeye maybe you can answer this for me since it seems you have a very good understanding of ts1/ts2.

any idea on what OEM brand compares closest to this ? I wanna head down to the local shop and see if I can shaft compare with the most similar head. Currently gaming Cobra Amp Cell Pro's with S300's but I'm at the point where I want more forgiveness and the T1's seem extremely appealing.

I wanna see how these pair with an PX6.0 or Modus Tour 120 without having to pay the Canadian shipping and prices first.

I found the the P790 was about as close of a comparison as you would find. Loft for loft the TS-2 matchup better and in launch monitor testing, launch and ball speed were nearly identical yet the TS-2 spun more by almost 350-400 rpm. The TS-1 have weaker lofts. I had those against a PXG and found those to be very similar in almost all data.

If I were to do shaft searching right now I would find a Mizuno dealer that had the new 3d shaft optimizer. Then I would try any of their game improvement forged heads. That will give you the best shart for you. In my tinkering with gear I have found that your best fit shaft travels very well to different head designs.

I'm currently in an s300. 7 iron is around 180. I believe the Cobra Amp cell pro 7 iron is @ 31*. From what I gather the TS1 is @ 32* so the 1* difference seems minuscule to me. I don't think I'll be able to try PXG clubs to compare. I was hoping possibly a Srixon 785 or Mizuno jpx 919 forged would be similar as I know the local Golftown Shop has those in the demo set that I could try to figure out the shaft situation.

The s300 is nice but working with coach to smoothen the swing. I've noticed the s300 is having a little bit of issues loading with a much smoother transition lately. Good information tho !

I'll report back the findings, incase anybody else is curious.
