Gapping Between 4 Iron and 3 Wood

Recommended Posts

I am currently looking for a 250 yard club to fill the gap between my 4 iron (225 yards) and 4 wood (275 yards). I have tried a hybrid, 7 wood and 3 iron and each have their pros and cons.

Hybrid:

Pros: Great out of rough, nice to use around the greens.

Cons: Hard to commit to off the tee (get too sweepy and hit big hooks). I also get occasional nukes coming into par 5's where the ball comes out like a driver flight and I airmail the green by 30 yards.

7 Wood:

Pros: Best out of rough, most stopping power.

Cons: Crappy on windy days, always seems to sit closed regardless of model which gets in my head at times.

3 Iron:

Pros: Easy to hit low bullets in the wind, most accurate left-right dispersion.

Cons: Crappy out the rough into a par 5, hard to swing on really cold days. Difficult to hold firm greens.

Other Info:

Driver SS: 120mph

Ball Flight: High draw, miss is an overcook.

Miscellanous: Hit 35% of fairways, play from the rough a lot.

What club would you choose???

7 wood for me. I'm comfortable hitting high lofted woods. Is it windy quite a lot where you live?

Look for something in the 19* range and consider the Cobra F6 Baffler. Throw a heavy shaft in there. See this thread.

Sounds like similar issues I’m having. With the 3h off the tee I found a nice low-mid flighted draw that works wonders into the wind

I feel your pain. I’m trying to find a club to use between my 58* sand wedge (155 yards) and my 64* wedge (125 yards). The only thing getting me by is that I hit my driver 380 (carry) and rarely have more than a wedge into any hole and if I have doubt I just 2 putt.

Done sir!

Get your hands on a hybrid that you can adjust flat and slightly open. Pair it with a stout shaft of your choosing

Similar problem ... I have a 2H (Cleveland Classic 19.5* with Gliderails) and a 20* 4-iron. 2H carries 225-235, 4-iron carries 200-210. I regularly play a course that has 2 par 3s that are 215-220yds, so I usually just choke down 1” on the 2H to avoid over swinging a 4-iron.

note: I carry 3 wedges and a 3 wood so no open slot for a 3-iron; just as well because I’d probably catch it 10% of the time on 20% of the days I play

Get a hybrid, 7w, and a 3i. Play the 7w when it's not windy, and the 3i when it is. Sell the hybrid on BST.

Buying more clubs than necessary is the most GolWRXer thing to do.

I am not sure what loft your 4i or 4wd is but what about one of those Crossover/Utility clubs in like a 3 iron loft (19-20)?

You're trolling us dude. Get a 64 wedge for all those approach shots from the rough.

The day I'm good to enough to hit a 64 degree wedge is the day I'll marry Gisele and win the lottery :taunt:. I wish I was trolling about hitting that few fairways :/

I hit one of those and yeah they are pretty sweet! Go hit one and see! I think it might fit well for what you are looking for and easy to flight down if windy out compared to the hybrid! :)

I love playing a 7 wood. Money out of the rough and hitting into greens. I just ordered the Titleist TS2 version but last year played with the 917 F2, which sits square and has the adjustability to dial it in so that it gives you a good trajectory without ballooning. I also use a low-launch shaft for this reason. Lots of guys on tour play 7-woods (Charles Howell, Keith Mitchell, Miguel Angel Jimenez) in part because some of the manufacturers make more players versions of these clubs, unlike the sky-ball launchers of the past. You obviously hit driver a long way. I would think you could hit into a lot of par 5s with 7 wood.

Here's my feeling about playing 3-iron because of windy conditions, FWIW ... Sure, if you are hitting dead into a heavy wind, 7-wood isn't great and you'll have to take more club, punch a 3-wood, or whatever. It's a solvable problem. But now reverse it. You have that same strong wind behind you and you're hitting into a green with a 3 iron. Unless you can consistently hit a soft, high cut from the fairway with a 3 iron (I can't) that long iron isn't going to be much help. Meanwhile, the 3i is going to be pretty worthless out of the rough or from wonky lies.

Another option that intrigues me is the TaylorMade GAPR (especially the Mid). Ugly as hell but they really work and do what they advertise by serving as the gap club between your longest iron and shortest fairway. They also feel really good and are adjustable.

Good luck.

We have similar speed and distances. Only difference is i have a 15* 3 wood, but between that and 4 iron has always been a spot im trying to figure out. As has been mentioned previously, i think it really depends on what you want to do with the club. If you want something safe off the tee then choose a 3 iron. If you hit as few fairways as you say then i would personally choose a hybrid to attack par 5s more. I have a hybrid and 5 wood that i rotate in that spot in the bag. Never personally liked a 3 iron due to being difficult to hit consistently and not being as versatile (for me) as the other options. Never liked a 7 wood either because they spin way too much for me and go way too high.

There really is no correct answer though.

Slightly less speed but have this spot rotating as well. I have a srixon u65 playing like a 2.5iron(19*, 39.25"). I typically play this in the summer, tons of run out on baked out fairways and great in the wind. Sometimes goes too far off the tee though

A Cobra baffler f6 at 17.5, at 41" with Kai'Li 80x tipped 2". Goes similar distance but much higher flight. Basically an all carry club.

Also typically fight a hook so typically stay away from hybrids. I was trying out the gapr mid and low and didn't play much different than my srixon u65. On a whim I tried a m3 hybrid. Nice little fall off fades, 145mph ball speeds , very easy to hit. Picked up a used on with a speeder 869x for $110. Im hoping it's the best of both

Hahaha about 300 carry avg if teed high. However, on tight holes I tee it really low, choke down and hit a squeeze fade which carries about 280
