BiMatrix question

With the new "Stroke Lab" putter shafts and the BGT putter shaft, it's got me thinking...

I've got a couple extra BiMatrix shafts sitting in the office that could go in a putter potentially. Kind of the same concept as the Stroke Lab/BGT and a hell of a lot cheaper to try at this point.

Has anyone tried this already or how do we think that might work?

Well, I assume that the Bimatrix shafts you've got sitting around are .335", so that presents your first problem. Other than the basic technology to mate the two materials, I would have to think the stiffness and feel are going to be totally different.

Got a few holes in today with my experiment. Felt good. Soft. ?

The condition on the greens is very poor where I Iive so not optimal for testing....

Regarding the build it was a little tricky making the putter fit inside the tip of the shaft. Had to tip it a fair amount.

It will stay in the bag for further testing. It passed the first test anyhow ?

Seeing as I’ve finally tracked down a putter head that’s damn near a copy of mine, I am planning on going forward with my build. Definitely going to shim it so most of the weight stays in the tip.

Glad it seems feasible at least!!

I can foresee a couple of potential issues with leaving the tip largely intact: Putter heads weigh in the 350g range while your average driver head is around 200g so maintaining the bulk of the steel tip will have the shaft play very flexibly- that''s nearly twice the head weight. Also, at 46" in raw length, cutting off a foot or more of the butt end will get well down into the tapered portion of the shaft and will likely require a large amount of tape buildup to secure a putter grip.

No sorry, did not put it on the scale.

It obv lost some weight. I did put some lead tape on the head before trying it on the course to get some weight back. Currently I have about 8 gram.

Not sure how a shim would have helped me here. This putter requires a "over-the-hosel" kind of installation. I tipped it to get the ID of the shaft wider ☺

While your thought on the weight is correct, I don't think it will ultimately be an issue for the putter build. The 200g moving at 90+ mph will play softer than 350 moving at max 6 mph. As annoying as building up the grip with tape would be I think it is interesting to try out anyway. Just my 2 cents.
