Larry Nelson Fan Club - Post here to show your respect

Always has been the most underappreciated and least mentioned golfer IMO. He was 3x major winner and didn't even play golf until he got out of the service after serving the country in Vietnam. Broke 70 just nine months after picking up a club. Yes he is in the HOF, but a major omission that he never captained a Ryder Cup despite winning 2 PGA Championships.

Show Larry some much deserved love with your respect below. :fan_1:

I agree that Larry Nelson was one of the top talents in golf.

From what I recall he went from beginner to scratch in just over a year!

When I think of golf in the 80's, I think of him and Watson.

It was a big disappointment for me that the Ryder Cup passed him over for captain. I am sure that it was payback for something he said/did.

Always a a big fan.

Originally from the Sand Mountsin area in Alabama. The fact that he never was a Ryder Cup captain is a snub that is hard to understand, and equally hard to forgive the PGA for committing.

I mean, maybe the PGA of America just believed he couldn't possibly be a better captain than *checks notes* Lanny Wadkins Tom Kite Curtis Strange Hal Sutton Tom Lehman Corey Pavin or Tom Watson?

He got finessed by Lanny, wish he could have been worked in as captain and Lehman was odd choice to me. Still not getting the demand for “today’s player we must show respect to” by the OP, but better than roasting Phil (or not as the case may be).

Demand? :WTF:

I love Larry and he has been the most overlooked and disrespected player of his generation. He is so forgotten that people ask why should I post compliments of him, even though you may have love for the man. Give him love or not, there is no demand here, only a place to give us all a small reminder of what a great player he was and the huge disrespect the PGA of America gave him by passing over him for Ryder Cup captain.

Can we really say that he is forgotten and overlooked when his name comes up on this board every couple of weeks and is a frequent subject of articles and televised spots every 2 years since about 2002? He is more relevant now as the forgotten man than he ever would have been if he had the US to another 16 1/2 - 11 1/2 drumming.

He was overlooked when it was his time. Were you banging the drum for him as captain in the 90’s?

Many young players probably don't even know he won 3 majors and I don't think he was getting any publicity on golf broadcasts as getting passed over for the Ryder Cup captain until they brought back Tom Watson in his 60's a couple years ago. Many said, what about Larry Nelson then. I don't think there is any romance for Larry and him being brought up "every couple weeks" on golfwrx is not giving the man his due, it is golf geeks doing what we do, which is geek out over niches in golf. He should have had and still could have the honor due to him as the Ryder Cup captain.

Maybe he can be Captain of a Champions Tour team ?

Certainly someone who served his country, won multiple majors and is a class act. Very humble.

You know, if you can't say something nice, you shouldn't say something at all.

but I am going to break that rule. The year after Tom Watson won his US Open at Pebble, Larry Nelson made a 60' putt at 15 or 16 at Oakmont to deny Tom a second US Open. I'm a Tom Wason fan, and Larry Nelson ruined my day. And Tom's too.

I respect a guy who picked up the game later in life (20 years old?), and got to achieve at the pinnacle of the game. Huge respect.

But I can't forgive him for denying Watson his second US Open.

Sometimes you get old and crotchety, like me.

So that means you hired a hit man to take out Stewart Cink after the 09 Open Championship playoff loss at Turnberry?????? :taunt:

Fair enough - we all have stuff that just wakes us up in the middle of the night for no apparent reason (last night I dreamed one of the dogs broke my trusty old school fat plastic four color pen).

Larry and the snub gets attention all the time, just seemed like a random outburst. Save something for the critical President’s Cup snubs.
