Beginner classic golf set - advise needed

Recommended Posts

Hello guys, hope you're doing good.

As I have said in previous message, I am a beginner and I bought these golf clubs for me. I will be picking them up in Miami. I have never had clubs, here in Uruguay they are very expensive. I post this here because I believe they're classic clubs from 90 - 00's.

The thing is, when I come back, American Airlines applies a policy of allowing only 14 golf clubs. Which adjustments would you make to this bag to fit with the required? Has anybody travelled in AA with more than 14 clubs?

I would certainly quit the 1-iron (this will be difficult for me to hit as a beginner) and I guess the Pyramid Driver and Pyramid 3 wood. Maybe the 2 iron too.

Then I'd get a 9 iron, a PW and a SW. What do you think?

P.S.: I know I must have bought something more forgiving and new, but this is what money allows me at the moment!

Hi,

On behalf of the classics forum, DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, throw away a 1-iron. You have Titleist Tour model irons, some people in the not-classics forum game these because they are that awesome. We in classics land (or at least me) would never want to see a 1 iron go. (same for the 2 iron). Your woods can be axed, if you want, but it's much ado about nothing. I have not flown AA, but I have flown Southwest and Norwegian with the sum contents of my luggage in the golf bag plus 15-20 clubs. They did not check, and I would be very surprised if they check you. If you are paranoid about them checking, I would say take the putter, and shorter irons and turn them upside down so you can't see them, but you have dividers so you can't quite manage it. I would say risk it, and if anything happens junk the woods on the spot.

As long as your luggage isn't excessively heavy. I doubt they'll count the clubs.

1) I thought the same as you, I doubt they'll count the clubs. I'll guess they'll check out if it doesn't exceeds the 23 kg limit they have.

2) I do not want to throw those titleists! they are beauties! What I consider is it will be difficult for me as a beginner to hit 1 and 2 irons.

Would you prefer the Tourney MacGregor wood to the Pyramid one, right?

For what it's worth: the Titleist irons look like early 80's, and I played them for many years. Not really forgiving, but good design, and will make you learn to swing the club and trust your swing.

The driver - eh, I'd ditch it, but keep the 3-wood.

There is a member here who is dealing with eliminating a lot of the clubs he has acquired, and all he is asking for is that the cost of shippiing be covered. You might want to PM him to see if there is anything he has that you could literally get for a song.

You will also need some type of travel bag, to keep all the clubs together. The airlines wil not take your bag like that, and I hope I'm not insulting you with that piece of advice, but as you are new to the game, while you might have figured it out, or had someone tell you already, the possibility that you may not be aware should now be covered.

The Titleist driver is worth keeping I think. Heck, they're all worth hanging on to. I'd like to see close-ups of the Tour Model irons, because I still have a set of the Tour Model originals back in the UK (1979-80). To be honest, the early Titleist Tour models probably weren't that great, but they WILL teach you how to hit the ball.

One thing's for sure: I'll never get rid of my set.

To me, club setup has a lot to do with learning the basics of hitting the ball. Heavier clubs, flatter lies, and little or no offset only help you learn a proper swing. Club offset, upright lie angles, perimeter weighting are all compromises to help golfers with poorer swings.

A well made blade will give you excellent feedback on where you are striking the ball. Hit the ball on the sweetspot and you will be rewarded with a wonderful feeling. Miss it and that clank will have you avoiding a mishit again like the plague.

Welcome to the world of persimmon and blades. If only they were making balata balls again...

Thank you very much for your view. I tend to see the same you see, I guess if I master these old ones, the precision will be better.

Have you thought about shipping part of the set back ?

I agree with keeping the whole set of irons together, where other clubs could be replaced, finding the matching 1 or the 2 iron will be difficult.

I had never heard of the limit for 14 clubs in the bag for checked in luggage. I believe the weight will be an issue, but, you can always pay the sur-charge for over weight bags. Check with the airline of the rate for over weight surcharge.

Was that a full set of irons ? Should be 10, from 1-PW.

I thought of shipping a part of the set via courier, but I think the costs will be higher.

I will take the risk and if they make me let go some clubs, the Pyramid DXs would go.

The thing is I bought the bag plus irons and macgregors as an used item in Marketplace. 3 and 9 are lost. Will find them! (even if they are from other brand, lol)
