Bag a 5W or a 3H

mxskier

Recommended Posts

Since the site is buggy and searching is not the best right now, I figured I'd post this out there.

Which do you go with? 3H or 5W?

I hit my 3W more consistently centered than I will my hybrid, though I am still getting used to the hybrid swing feel. But directionally a 5W will surely be harder to control being at 42-42.5" vs 40" Does a 19 5W go that much farther on the carry than a 3H?

Another benefit for a 3H is that you can use it easily for bump and runs, punch shots, and all around utility. How does a 5W compare on that front?

Just curious for everyones thoughts.

I don't have a Hybrid but I do have a Srixon U45 18 degree that I switch out with a Ping G20 5 wood depending on the course I'm playing and conditions. The 5 wood is much easier to hit but it's harder for me to control (I.e. keep low, work right to left, etc.). I also hit it MUCH higher so on a windy day I'll play the U45.

I've been running a 3h. But turned up to 21°.

Right now I'm. Playing 9° driver, 16° 3 wood and 19° hybrid turned up. Gives me great gapping and useable lofts without a huge gap between my hybrid and 4 iron which is 24°

You would have to do a side-by-side with 3H and 5W to know for sure. A 5W would probably go farther, if you can control it, and a 3H would launch lower on windy days.

A 3H probably comes closer to a 7W in distance, rather than a 5W.

As far as chip shots out of greenside moon craters, a 3H and a 5W can both be used for this.

I find a 20 degree hybrid more versatile and a better fit for my game when compared to a 5 wood.  Also, for me, the hybrid is more accurate.

On Trackman the total distance is about the same.  However, the 5 wood carries further and stops quicker, were as the hybrid comes in a bit hotter with more roll.  In the few cases I need the additional carry than my hybrid can give, I will choke down my 3 wood and/or work to cut the ball in high and soft.

Ultimately, for the courses I play I like the versatility of my 3 wood - 20 degree hybrid combo.

I go back and forth between the two, I have a G410 19* hybrid that I love but my TS2 18* 5W is also great. I feel the hybrid is a little more versatile and I can hit it out of most lies whereas the fairway wood  not as confident in deep rough etc

Finding hybrids I like is tough, but doable. I mostly gravitate towards driving irons for that spot now though. I'll take the only true compromise of decreased rough performance. As long as you have enough loft in the new driving irons they are very versatile. I got away from carrying 5-wood because my build was going too far...I almost never needed it off turf for my game.

I seem to like most hybrids from the 2007-2011 era. Dont be afraid to look at some older models in search for a hybrid or fairway.

My personal thoughts on 3h vs 5w -
3h:
  • Generally launches lower, usually lower spin
  • Easier to control due to shorter shaft
  • Less club speed, usually less ball speed
  • Less forgiving
  • Most versatile club in the 18-20* slot
5w:
  • Will launch higher, with more spin
  • Harder to control & usually harder to work
  • More club speed, sometimes more ball speed
  • More forgiving
  • Less versatile, but superior for holding greens
For right now the biggest advantage I see of my hybrid is that it's much flatter off the tee than a 5w. I don't usually (need) to try and hit greens from 230+ out, so the whole holding green advantage of the higher launching 5w isn't really a factor. A hybrid will be less forgiving for sure (especially a smaller player's hybrid) but the flight off the tee is ideal. My 818H2 launches about the same as my P7903i which has a 120g X flex steel shaft in it. I've used 5w in the past and they've launched suuuuper high. I'm willing to experiment again with something like an M3/M5 5w to see if I can bring the launch down a little while retaining higher speeds, but I'm doubtful it can replace my small players hybrid.

Never liked 5 woods. Right now I'm switching between a 20° hybrid and a 18° iron in that slot.

Last season I gamed a 2 iron and 3 wood. I decide to buy a 19 degree hybrid to have along my 3 iron in my new set. I just feel with the hybrid I can nut it (240) and feel confident it won’t go out of play. My 3 wood on the other hand, I just can’t control it as well. Maybe if my 3 woods loft was higher like those 16.5 deg 3(4) woods I’d feel differently.

I went back and forth for quite some time, but finally ditched the 3H and went with the 5 wood, I hit it longer and higher, so it fits well for my setup. I really don't get along with hybrids that well for some reason.

Both since I have the space in my bag ... hybrid straighter, 5 wood longer ... I use the tool that fits the need - king of like box wrench vs. socket ...

Gone back to a 5w very recently. I'll test it against a 19/20 hybrid soon. The 5w is very easy to hit from the fairway or first cut for me, and long.

I use the hybrid instead of a 5 wood and have my 3 wood shortened a bit. I like the ball flight from my F7 hybrid much better than the 5 wood(I  usually play it at 21.5 degrees and get a pretty good flat ball flight with it). It doesn't exactly stop on a dime, but if I 'm far enough out that I need to hit it, getting it to stop immediately is probably the least of my worries.

Why decide? Get the best of both. The Cobra F6 Baffler is about as hybrid-like as a fairway can be, and it is 41.75 inches, a little shorter than typical FW to boost control. Changeable weights. Head is 147cc. New ones on RBG for $80? Can’t go wrong.

I never hit a hybrid until a recent fit. Liked it so much I now have three of them in the bag, kicking 5W, 7W and 5i in favor of F9 3H and 5H, along with an F7 3/4H adjusted to 21.5* (right in between the other two hybirds - they were on sale for $85 earlier this week). So far impressive results - hit the 3/4H the first time today with a couple of solid, straight strikes. The G400 5W and 7W will go onto the classifieds...but YMMV.

I switched from a 3hy back to 5W while keeping the 4hy. I have better accuracy with the woods than the 3 hy as I found it harder to hit than the other adjacent clubs. In addition I have a 13 deg 3W as well as driver. The extra woods give me tons of options for the lengthy shots, which I need. I’ve dropped a wedge at the bottom of the bag and I now use 52 & 58 and couldn’t be more pleased with this 13 club set up. I’m do agree that the 5w has a higher flight than the 3hy.

I play both 5w and 3h and ditched the 4i instead, couldn't hit that with any consistency. Much easier with the 5w and 3h for me.

I adjusted lofts on 5w down and 3h up to fit the gaps and I'm very happy with the change ... (famous last words :# )

I just did this test a week ago, Titleist 909 F2 18.5 5 wood playing 1/2" short, Ping i20 3 hybrid (20*) and Srixon U45 23*. I was trying to figure out which one I wanted to go with this year in the main bag and i think im going to make it a game time decision depending on wind, U45 windy, 5 wood calm.

5 wood launched higher and steeper decent

3 hybrid mid launch compared the 5 wood with a little more role out

U45 launch lower with more role out

from that distance I like the steep decent to hold green unless its to windy of course which is when the U45 will come out and play.
