Back to the future for satisfaction

Recommended Posts

So, I’m a 75 year old who up until Dec had not touched a club due to sickness for 19 months . In Dec went in Seniors Comp on handicap of 14 and came 124th out of 124 . In early Feb played on same 72 hole championship course in same Comp on same handicap and came 3rd out of 124th . But there was no joy!!

So two weeks ago pulled out my old 86’ Honma CL708 professional irons and went to local par 33 9 hole course and had an absolute ball ending up with a score of 38 off the stick. The odd mis hit stung ,couldn’t hit the 3 and the 4 went like an arrow but only 20feet off the ground . By dropping one for short and two for long irons lost no distance so to speak. I enjoyed it so much I decided to complete the change and managed to pick up a Honma “extra 90” One and Five woods for $45 in good condition which I have just finished refurbishing.

That’s what golfs all about isn’t it? Enjoyment.

Welcome from me too--- And yes you got it dialed in it is all about enjoying yourself----- I have folks ask me all the time "Why do you hit those antique blade irons?" I basically tell them because I enjoy hitting them and I still CAN!!! You look like you have some fairly dangerous weapons but they are turned backwards--- BTW I give all the lefties hell on that it is expected of me sorta a trademark of mine.

Footnote--- You will have a blast with the Homna irons especially the older ones--- Most mainstream golfers think Homna is a "new" brand since the recent Justin Rose signing. I kinda have a same blast with my 54 Hogan Precision irons especially when I wear my Hogan visor. I had the Precisions in the bag one day and my visor on. Had a young guy ask me " if I was playing Hogan Ft Worth irons" I told him yeah and he had to look. He looked disappointed. He said " I meant new Hogan Ft Worth irons" I told him well they are Hogan Ft Worth irons and they were new back in 1954. He had no clue

Ah, the pain the pain. Let me set you right Stu. or is that left. Only those gifted persons are blessed with being able to stand on

Correct ie RIGHT side of the ball and constantly hit sweet shot after shot. You know we’re swingers not hitters and notwithstanding most courses are designed for rh faders and club manufacturers fear our talent and not provide the array rh are given we are able to split the fairway 12/14 with ease. We can even use the ball designed for RH without effort .

I picked up the cl708s for $100 about 10 years ago . Very grotty so cleaned them up used them a couple of times and stored them away . Thank goodness.

I see the G1-X in your arsenal , good?

My other clubs are Cleveland 588i irons and MizunoJpx driver

Welcome Tommix, those Honma’s are beautiful. I think many people have lost some of their enjoyment of they game by playing “launch monitor golf”. Obsessing over spin rates and launch angles, spending hundreds of dollars on shaft upgrades, and wondering if the driver they bought 6-months who is no longer worth playing since it’s successor has already been released touting ever greater distance.

The best performing clubs will always be the ones that you are drawn to. The ones you become intimately familiar with after 1000’s of balls hit, yet still are excited by the next shot.

Congrats on finding yours and your enjoyment again.

That G1-X is the best metal driver I ever owned---- Kinda a odd ball thing in the golf world---- I have seen one other person on a golf site hitting one and I can not remember if it was on WRX or MGS. And 588s you can not go wrong with I do not give a hoot which way they are turned. Folks also tell me that JPX driver when set up correctly is a sleeper.

Thanks everyone . Took the irons out again today plus the 5 wood. The driver needs another week for the Poly to cure.

Aside from digging a couple of craters with the 10 ( absolutely no forgiveness ie razor edge no bounce) ) the irons were well behaved and I’ve quickly found my go too’s are the 5 and 8.

The 5 Wood. Well I was 175 out executed an easy smooth swing to hit it sweet watched it fly beautifully and drop 30 short.

Tried to hit the cover off the next two 5 woods ,topped both but they went straight . Swing easy ,swing easy

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally got to take the Honma extra 90 driver out for hit .  Course was soggy from heavy rain last few days.

Hell the head is so small I used a titleist 913 F cover. That now gives me a total Honma bag except putter and SW. (The SW is longer in shaft  than the 10 cl708 prof. so might add half inch to butt.)

My gaming driver is a Mizuno JPX stiff. The honma has a carbon r1 shaft ,I thought it was an S2 like all the other clubs but alas I was wrong. So without warm up teed up on first hole with a small wooden tee executed

a slow takeaway and 3/4 swing and OMG dead straight with about half height of Mizzie and stopped about

15 feet from my best Mizzie drive this year. I was in love with the result and sound but alas I stuffed the rest up by teeing too high for three  water carrys (got over on two) or too low trying to find the magic spot again. Direction of hits? All good except one low hook .

Am using Callaway super soft.

Is half ball above head too high to tee?

Can’t wait to see faces  of foursome at next Comp when I turn up with these.

Gotta love it!

Well I won’t bore you after this with my exploits with the honma extra 90 driver .

BUT

Yesterday I went full swing . After sorting out tee height I really can’t get over how straight I’m hitting it

I’m opening up the face a smidgen.

The ninth is 330yd with a 187 yd carry to clear a pond / creek from the back tees with uphill fairway on other side . I teed up 5 in front of back . It was not an issue ended up 112 from green .

With only a 5 wood which must be only 22 degrees I really need to source a 3 for longer holes
