What gets your vote for the best iron set of the last 5 years, and why?

For me it's no doubt the Z745s. I have tried many others, a couple have been close but I keep coming back to them. Feel, forgiveness, distance, looks.... they have it all. I have not found anything that outright beats them for me, and it's not for lack of trying.

 

716 cb and S55 come close.

Depends on what you are looking for and price point, so you're likely to get a bunch of different responses based on everyone's own personal preferences. For me, it is the TM P770s which seem to get no love, but have been the best iron set for me that I can recall. You'll also get lots of Ping love, which I can't argue with - they seem pretty solid in everything from player's style to game improvement midsize to SGI shovels.

My Ping iE1's with recoil 125 shafts get a vote, I hit those very well for me. Like a club junkie I sold em off, too good. Kept the shafts, need some more iE1's. My i200's have kept me from buying more iE1's so they get my vote as well.

 

I dont know about the recoil shafts but I have the stock graphite shat in mine.

For me they are the perfect iron, not to big, not to small. Perfect amount of playability and forgiveness.

Had them with steel shafts prior to this set but my elbows made me switch to graphite and couldnt be happier.

I have two sets, the callaway CF 16 and the Cobra Forged Tec. Both are equally awesome. I play the CF16's more than the cobra simply because I think they are a better looking golf club.

I love my AP2. 718 was noticeably better for me than 716.

 

But taking my bias out of the equation, Apex CF16 were pretty special irons. The fact that it took Callaway 3 years to replace them kinda speaks volumes from a company that offers multiple new sets of irons a year. Good looks, feel, forgivness, and distance. Also Ping i200 was/is a classic set. Understated looks, great performance, good feel for a cast club.

Ping IE1. New material (431 SS) felt much better. Some did not like the looks but most loved the performance. As noted above any player from a 16 to + could play those irons.

Is the Ping S55 still under 5 years old? If not, TM P770 - more "player's-like" than the P790 but still quite forgiving and "somewhat" normal lofts.

 

Plenty of votes for Mizuno (just never tried them for whatever reason), Srixon (can't try them if I wanted to due to lack of demo availability in my area), Titleist (I love their balls, but just Meh! on their clubs), and finally Ping (seems you either love them or hate them?).

That's what is in my bag right now. The wedges have little offset and the offset is progressive. Irons are very big when comparing to a "player" set but so forgiving. I hit a few shots off the toe last week that almost reached the green. And by toe, I mean the smooth part of the face where the grooves stop.
