Homemade Super Speed Golf Experiment/Training

Recommended Posts

Long time reader, first time poster here at golfwrx. Figured that all the help this website has given me deserves some reciprocation.

I made a homemade super speed golf club using an old graphite shaft, nut/bolt, washers, epoxy. I am able to change the weights to 5% heavier, 10% lighter, 20% lighter. I intend to put myself through the suggested protocol to see my improvement before (and during?) the golf season.

About me;

_________

27 years old

6 2"

170 lb

+1 handicap ( +2 short game, 4 handicap iron game, driver is a strength)

Skinny but above average athletically (can dunk a basketball).

Play all sports but fell in love with golf around 20-21 years old.

Physical education/science teacher which gives me lots of time to work on speed and golf game in the summer.

I do have a nagging left wrist injury which has been bothering me for last 1.5 years.

_________

Swing

Last time I was fit I was swinging around 107 mph. I would say thats my average but know I can step on it and get to 110+.

I hit almost every ball a hair thin with no divot past a 8 iron.

Shortish swing with a smooth transition and very little wrist hinge.

_________

Experiment

On top of my homemade device, I am fortunate enough to have the swing speed radar and even a skytrak launch monitor (which I absolutely love).

I will have lots of data including baseline and weekly updated stats.

I will be working out 2-3x a week with speed/power as my focus.

_________

I look forward to using this as a platform to motivate and inform others. I also hope this holds myself accountable to give myself a solid 6-8 weeks of training using the superspeed methodology.

Pictures will follow.

Good luck with your sticks….I just made a set recently myself (5% heavier, 10% lighter, and 20%) lighter than my Epic driver. I bought 3 graphite shafts online, and 3 grips (green, blue, and red), and utilized the nut and washer method as well. I actually took a shaft to the store and went through the bend of galvanized nuts until I found some that I actually had to screw down on the shaft to get them on. I then found galvanized washers that were just slightly larger than the shaft. I ended up using super glue on the nut and then used super glue on each of the 25 washers (making one large washer if you will), and spread super glue on the shaft before sliding the washers on. I completed it with an additional nut at the end (with about ¼” of shaft sticking out). I then bought a multi-color pack of electrical tape and wrapped the nuts and washers with either green, blue, or red tape. I just wanted to keep them somewhat like the actual sticks (color wise) and be able to quickly pick the stick I wanted. Note: I did add some lead tape strips before wrapping the blue and red one since I used the same amount of washers on each.

I have been using for two weeks so far and am starting to see results on my brother-in-law’s simulator. They have also showed no signs of coming apart either.

I built a cheap speed stick from an old broken shaft and some nuts . Just electrical tape wrapped very tight. I was at the gym at the school i work at and was doing my swing set and had the nuts all taped together come flying off as one. I swing my driver at 117 so can imagine how fast these were going. Just missed a window and lodged into the celing panel. Glue is a must!! Lucky was just me and my buddy in there. But i never swung towards people anyways. Good luck!

Level 1 protocol today. Only did 2 sets per exercise with each weight.

Baseline

-20% : 126 mph high

-10% : 119 mph high

5% : 110 mph high

I put the radar a few inches directly face on my swing. Anyone know if this is the best spot to have it vs behind?

The radar is supposed to be in the face on position about 6-8 inches in front of where the ball would be, and at aprox a 45 degree angle back towards you/the ball

I just finished making a set Friday. Went though my first session Sunday making sure the epoxy was fully cured. Nervous a head would fly off. Everything stayed put and giving them a little tug it felt solid. I made them using the cheapest shafts and grips from golfworks and machined the weights from stainless steel. Luckily I'm able to use solidworks and a machine shop at my work for personal projects. -20%, -10%, +5% is all based on my F8+ total weight.

I don't have a swing speed reader, but from going through driver club fittings my starting point is 94-95mph. Really excited to see how well they work to gain speed

Those are fantastic!

Mostly PING clubs, with TaylorMade woods.

Cool to see I’m not the only one out there! Good luck to everyone.

Second day of superspeed training today

My highs were

119, 111, 104

Interesting to see them down by that much. Could be an off day and/or placement on my radar.

Not going to get too invested in the numbers but instead going to keep trying to swing out of my shoes!

Back at it today.

I'm 6 workouts in (started med ball training for power/speed) and am feeling stronger already.

My superspeed numbers were

_______

124, 114, 108

__________

I want to lengthen my swing and I feel that using superspeed is already making my backswing longer and follow through more full. Excited to see what 4 more weeks will bring before the golf season begins up here in toronto.

  • 2 weeks later...

so about 6 sessions in.

Went down to myrtle beach over the march break and was surprisingly hitting the ball further and straight with driver. Might be a placebo effect.

This week I hit personal bests of

131 with 10% lighter

123 with 5% lighter

117 with 5% heavier

3-4 weeks until golf season so trying to stay consistent.
