MP-64 to what???

tftimm

Recommended Posts

I’m a single digit golfer who doesn’t play frequenty. I’ve been playing 64’s with KBS stiff for 6 years, H4 3 iron. I had some 33’s before that and loved them...just wanted some more forgiveness.

Im going tomorrow for the PGASS Van Fitting 1.5hr deal to get fit for irons...have always liked Mizuno’s, so leaning towards MP-18 combo set or some 919 Tour. I like blades in a 6-pw but would need forgiveness in 3-5, maybe even 3-6. Thoughts on the following:

MP-18 HiFli 2-5, MP-18 blades 6-pm...should I slot another MP between hifi and blades?

919 Tour 4-pw, 919 HM 3

I was quickly fitted (in one of the booths last year) for +1”, KBS Lite stiff...we’ll. I want to get all the gaps right, shaft, etc. before I spend the money.

Anyone that has done the same, what do you all think?

Another option is to simply get my 64’s and H4 reshafted, gripped, bent or whatever needs to match my fitting. I wish I could get an H4 4 and 5 iron. The H4’s are underrated in my opinion.

Thanks in advance!

Same boat as you, coming off mp64 and played blades previously. New MP line is great, also I found the srixon z forged blades to be incredibly forgiving and very long (too low spin for me). Callaway apex pro a pleasant surprise. Ultimately I fell in love w Miura MC501, cleanest at address, best (to me) feeling and tightest dispersion. But I would be happy moving to any of the others listed above. Good luck!

I recommend you to try Srixon.

Soft as old mizzy and very easy to make combo set(easier than mizzy imo)

64’s are still a cut above most “player's clubs”. If the faces are good and they still suit your game, rebuild is very much an option.

Although I can understand if you're tired of them, MP-64s are still one of my favorite irons. Fortunately, new shafts and grip can breathe new life into an old set. That's certainly the case for me where I still happily play some of my clubs from 5+ years ago so long as they're fitted the new shaft tech.

Important to try out both the 5x5 and 7x5 for your swing. The wider or thinner sole make work better for you. The 5 series is way too chunky on the bottom for me - I'd fat the hell out of it. I need a narrow sole. Forgiveness is swing dependant.

Got fitted. Tried Srizon and Callaways...but something about the Mizzy’s. To my surprise, I was fit and felt best with c-Taper lite R-105, +1/2”, std loft/lie. I will get a combo set of 18 hifli 3-5, 6-pm SC. Blades were nice but rhe SC’s were just solid to me, that little touch of forgiveness. The SC looks vwr similar to the 64’s at address. I was never a fan of the 64 short irons, 18Mc’s are nicer.

I never thought regular shafts, but the numbers and feel don’t lie. I have a smooth 3/4” swing with little lag and a smooth transition. Im also a sweeper, not a digger. I’m planning to get them from DD.

Fitting experience was great. The guy was very knowledgable and answered all my questions.

Looking forward to them...

Awesome to hear. Nothing wrong with reg shafts. Jim Furyk uses reg in his irons and I'm quite sure he swings faster/better than I do haha. Good idea doing a combo. I'm considering replacing my AP2 4 and 5 iron with T-MBs. You really just need straight high flights on those irons. The SC were nice. Didn't work numbers wise for me but they're a nice iron.

Titleist really made a big jump with their CB line in 716 and 718.

I used the MP-64 for a couple seasons and proudly stated they were the best irons I'd found to that point. They had that sweet Mizuno feel with increased playability in the long irons compared with traditional blades. That said, I sold them when a shaft change went awry.

With the purchase of my new 716 CB earlier this year, I think I've finally found something that picks up where those 64's left off. I'll give the edge to the 64 in terms of pure feel but these CB's are noticeably more forgiving and even look a little better in the sort irons, IMHO.

I had stayed away from CB's in prior lines because I never found them all that forgiving compared with blades, but with the 716, the forgiveness is there in spades. I couldn't recommend their with any more enthusiasm. I love mine.

Yes the 716 is fantastic. I ordered a set to try off of GlobalGolf and unfortunately they were not in the listed condition and had been reshafted by an absolute hack but they were great when I took them out. Close to AP2 in forgiveness and very soft. Great clubs.

I ordered my combo set today from DD’s. I’ll give a solid comparison/review of my 18-SC/FliHi vs my 64/H4 set. I got fitted from my previous KBS Tour shafts S to C-Taper Lite R. I didn’t do a full fitting for my 64’s. I will also go from std length.+1* upright to 1/2” long, std lie.

I find the 57’s and the 64’s to be equally forgiving. I still occasionally play the 64’s and do play them when traveling. I believe the 57’s feel a little sweeter on center hits and are slightly more forgiving and workable, but I also feel that the sole grind of the 64’s is a truly great and forgiving design.

I meant "much happier". Anyway, like SwingBlade said, forgivenes is about equal. You need to be able to hit both of them pretty close to the sweet spot or neither are going to be fun to play. Sweet spot strikes (want to say "center" but the sweet spot, i have found, is closer to the heel) on the 57 feel more solid than soft like the 64, and I prefer that feeling. Turf interaction with both is excellent, but I give the edge to the Miuras, nothing else like it when sliding through the ground. I like the more squared off toe of the CB-57 as well.

I think I'll always own Mizuno irons. They are great clubs. Once I hit the CB-57, though, I really had no choice. They're just better. For me, at least. You can't make a wrong decision with your taste in irons unless you struggle with contact.

Not surprised at all you fit into CTL reg. Very stable and it must be giving you the best ball flight with that head. If you were fitting for something like a Hot Metal, might need heavier to get best flight.

I bet you will enjoy the feel of them. Don’t fear going after it. CTL is a shaft I have played in a couple of sets and it is one of my two KBS choices, the other being the S Taper.
