Players who went from 4 wedges back to 3, why?

Well, it depends on which iron set I'm playing....but I prefer a 3-wedge set up. Obviously distance is 100% dependent on lofts, but if I have a 46* PW in the bag, I usually go with 3 more wedges (50*, 54* or 56*, and 60*). However, I prefer to have weaker lofts n my PW, so for example with my Wilson FG62s: PW (47* bent to 48*), 52* and 58*

With a 50* PW, I'll go PW, 54* (or 56*), 60*.

As I prefer weaker lofts, I'll often bend my sets to get a 48* or 50* PW. This means usually an extra wood at the top, or driving iron. I'm also about to start using hybrids again, so it means space for one of them. Basically, three wedges gives me more tee-shot and second-shot options on par 5s.

I'm going to try and compare scores using both setups.

I started in the previous century when pro shops offered only a PW (~50*) and a SW (~56*). I hit greenside cut shots with a SW for 20 years before the LW arrived.

Fast forward... I changed out all my clubs circa 2008, and eventually went with 46* PW + Cle CG14 50 / 54 / 58 for several seasons. The CG14s started to wear, so I retooled.

The Callaway guy came to our club three different times one year, so I tested out the MD3 group and ended up with my current Calla wedges. With my old CG14 set-up, I noticed that on a given day I would use either the 46* or the 50* for shots around the green. No particular reason, which one I grabbed that day. Also, I noticed yardage overlaps in several cells of the four-wedge matrix.

I decided to go with the 48 / 54 / 60 after some testing and a little luck. The 48* I got at a discount from the Calla guy, the 54* I got on a swapout for a door-prize wedge, and an almost-new 60* MD-PM appeared in a used club bin for $40 (!). (I reshafted it to match the MD3s.)

The three-wedge mix is a lot easier to manage. Only glitch: a 20 yard gap between 9i and PW. Solution is to grip down on 9i to shave yardage, or deloft 48* to add yardage.

**14th club?** I'm odd in that I carry both a 4i and a 4H (carries about a club longer). Both useful for different things.

Because I never used the "gap" wedge is the short answer. For reference, I started playing golf in 2010, and my set PW was 47. I bought three additional wedges for no other reason than the guy at Roger Dunn recommended it. (I laugh about this now; the SW even matched the iron set!) I've been playing a pretty traditional setup (driver, two fairway woods, 3-PW, two wedges, putter) since and don't see myself changing until age or strength requires me to. I've never had any issues because I always bent my PW a degree or two weak to 48. Thinking about how I'd use four wedges honestly confuses me as I type this.

I play 3 in the winter and 4 in the summer. I like a low bounce 60 or 62 off tight lies, but I think it saves me strokes to leave it at home when the turf is wet and unsupportive. I also like adding a 3H back into the bag when the temps are cool and there's less carry and run out. Can't say it really makes a huge difference; it's just a preference.

Stop gapping wedges based on loft. Not all wedges hit the same yardages, even though they may have the same loft. Buy wedges based on need, not purely on loft gaps.

I went from 47, 50, 56, 60 to just 46, 52, 58. My new 52 hits the same shots as my old 50. My new 58 can do everything my previous 56 and 60 could do. I didn’t fill the hole in the bag with anything. 13 clubs is plenty and I don’t have any gaps.

I went from 3 wedges to 4. I like have an iron set gap wedge in the bag. Purely for full and knock down shots. I like the extra “help” my iron gw gives me vs having a blade like 50 or 52. From there I have my vokey 54- 110 yard full, and for all touch, pitch shots around green and my vokey 60- bunker/flop situations only. Sometimes I’ll hit my 60 on full shots or pitch shots but much prefer manipulating my 54.

Namely I use 4 wedges but to me it is more like 2 wedges system.

I have p790 pw and gw. And, carry about 140, 128. And, I don't use them any specialty shots around green.

So, basically, they are irons.

I use only two wedges;

1. higher bounce wedge - fluffy lie or bunker

2. lower bounce wedge - tighter lie or bunker

I have four mainly because my PW is 44* (followed by 49*, 54*, 57*. Sometimes use a 60* instead of the 57*).

I'm all for simplifying the game but honestly I think a lot of mid-swing speed amateurs are better off with more wedges vs a lot of similar clubs at the top. It seems that unless you are swinging pretty fast, a lot of lofts all bunch together distance wise at the top. I'd value a different bounce option in a wedge more than having two clubs for 200+ shots, which rarely hit the green anyways.

I only have 13 clubs in the bag now. If the course i played on had really firm turf, I'd rather add a low bounce LW than a 3 hybrid or 4 wood as the 14th club.

Of course, Rory just won with 3 wedges and I think he's historically used 4.

My wedges were around 45, 50, 55, 60. I found that I had little use for the 60 as I was generally better off avoiding flop shots. I played 45, 50, 56 eventually.

I’m trying 45, 50, 54, 58 now as I want to see if having more full shots to the green from 120 in will help.

Because I can take a little off my PW to fit the GW yardage, I find having a driving iron for tight par 4’s and a hybrid when I need high lofted shots into par 5’s more useful.

Oops, with the edit function now limited to one hour, I have to go back and correct this in a new post.

It should be "Obviously distance is NOT 100% dependent on lofts" as some of you have pointed out.

I've got two Callaway MD2 52* wedges with the same type of shaft, and one goes 5~6 yards further than the other. I've even checked lofts, and within 0.5*, they're the same.

This is where it's become a bit of a game of the names on the clubs have changed. I have a 45°, 50°, 55° and 60° in one of my modern sets, but it's a 9, PW, SW and LW.

In my sets with PW less than 50°, I tend to use it simply as a 10 iron with the GW acting as my first "wedge." Works out the same for me, but in those sets I end up carrying an extra wedge (PW, GW, SW, LW).

Pitching , gap, sand, wedges are plenty,

Especially when you consider distances with1/2, 3/4, and full swings , gripping up or down, and

The ability to open the clubface, my goodness, thats like 27 combinations

Of different shots to use around the green, I think that is more than enough

I actually played with five wedges last year: 45, 50, 54, 58, 62. All Vokey SM7s.

This was overkill.

I rarely used my 62. And I have swapped out the Vokey 45 for the PW from my iron set. So in addition to that club I'm carrying these Vokeys: 50-54-60.

I see a lot of guys now going for a 64 degree wedge. If you can hit it consistently and you've got extra space in your bag, go for it. But for me, I discovered that everything I was doing with my 58 (D) and 62 (M) I could do with a single club: Vokey 60 D grind (enough bounce for bunkers and approach shots, enough loft for flops and touch shots around the green).

I'm going to try 3 wedges this year. I've been playing 4 and I'm not really sure what it's buying me. I hit 90% of my shots around the green with one club. Almost every wedge needs a little added or taken off anyways...

I had an eye opening experience last year playing in a "shamble" where everyone in the foursome hits a drive, you pick the best ball, and everyone plays from there. I'm a high single digit and I shot a 63... My primary course is extremely demanding off the tee. I think having a 3/5 wood plus a hybrid in the bag to be able to place tee shots will save me more strokes.

The blue diamonds are where I was last year. The green is where I'd be this year.

Simplicity.

Once you get good at taking yardage off wedges, 4 degree gaps really arnt necessary.

I was 46, 50, 54 58. But last year I went 46, 50, 56... doing most of my work with the 56. It sure simplifies the decision between a 54 and a 58 and I think I was better for it. Like it was said before, I learned with just a PW and SW (1970s thru 90s) and I didn't know loft, bounce or grinds - just a P and and S stamped on the bottom. Now I think it can be confusing what to purchase and then which wedge for which shot.

i honestly didn't use my 64* in my previous setup and it allowed me to re-work the top of my bag to best serve me for shorter par 4's and approaches into par 5's.

Interested to see if he keeps this setup for the year, as he's historically used 4 wedges. His 5-wood, 2-iron, 3-iron setup at the Players seemed strange as well. I'd think most of the time he'll have the 3 wood and then the choice is 5 wood or 2 iron, implying that the 3 iron or another wedge is the last decision.

Really, I think most people need two greenside/partial swing wedges. 3 or 4 total seems like it's mainly dependent on how strong the PW is. I think a lot of people are playing the PW / GW as 10 / 11 iron full swing clubs.

I play 4. 46/50/54/58. Like my gapping. Near perfect. Just makes top of the bag a little trickier to make sure gaps are good.

If I had to go to three it would be 48/54/58. Then bend rest of irons 2 degrees weak. But that's gonna happen, adding too much bounce to a near perfect set of irons sounds like a bad idea
