Seneca Hickory Stick, Conklin Players Club and Leatherstocking

When it warms up, I am thinking of playing these three courses, as they are listed by GolfWeek Magazine, as Top Courses You Can Play in New York. I will be heading to Rochester for a high school reunion and want to play a little golf. I have already played Ravenwood, which is on the list, and others that are not, like Oak Hill - East Course.

Just trying to check off a few more on the list each time I go up there... the next trip will include the three at Turning Stone Resort, plus

Anyone play those three courses I listed in the topic heading and suggestions, hints, etc. THANKS in advance.

I have played all 3. Leatherstocking has incredible views. Conklin and Seneca are both solid tracks as well. I do second the suggestion of Hiawatha - it is a links style course and a lot of fun as well. Either way, you are in for some significant driving from Rochester to Conklin - I would imagine Hiawatha is a lot closer to ROC.

I would pick En-Joie over Conklin! I play the Binghamton courses quite a bit (I live a little north of Scranton, PA) and En-Joie is easily my favorite. The layout is top notch. It has an old school feel with narrow-tree lined fairways and tricky greens. The conditions are always extremely good. Especially the closer you get to the Dick's Open.

Hiawatha is one of my favorites as well. It tends to be a little wet (especially the front 9) given its proximity to the river and the course being rather flat. Water and trees comes into play quite a bit more on the front 9 while the back 9 has more of a traditional links feel. My only real complaint is the #18. I love par 5 finishing holes but this one sucks. If you don't have a 260+ yard carry off the tee you need to hit away from the hole.

Conklin is a fun course but there's a few quirky/dumb holes; especially on the back 9. Lots of elevation changes and awesome views. Conditions are usually solid although the greens can get a little bit beat up as the season moves along.

Overall, the Binghamton area has 3 top-notch public courses. Plus, Binghamton Country Club is an awesome Tillinghast design that deserves more praise. Pretty impressive collection of golf courses for a rather small metro area.

Have you played Seven Oaks at Colgate? That's a great course. I liked the RTJ Course at Cornell too!

Glad to hear the conditions at Seneca Hickory Sticks is excellent. Yes you are... Seneca Hickory Sticks is no where near the others. I am using Rochester as a base as I am going to a high school reunion, then heading west to Seneca Hickory Sticks, then back to Rochester for a couple of days, then east and south to Conklin Players Club, then Leatherstocking, and then to Syracuse to fly back to Florida. So a bunch of driving.... but then I have 3 more checked off my list. :-)
