Wide sole players irons

SMAC43

Recommended Posts

I never got along well with GI irons...always played better with a smaller CB with narrow sole & less offset. My new golf course in LA has Bermuda fairways which are pretty firm and grabby. I’m more of a digger, but it’s now almost impossible to take a proper dollar bill shaped divot...it’s too hard to get though the turf. End result I’m hitting more shots slightly heavy, leading edge digs a bit. Wrists and elbows starting to ache. I’m looking for suggestions on smallish low offset players irons with a wider GI type sole which will help prevent against digging. (I know I need to work on lowering angle of attack but in the meantime I want new irons.) Currently playing Adams cmb forged. Thx

All of these mentioned plus the Bridgestone J15CB or the Tour B X-CB. Bridgestone likes to put a wider sole even with thin toplines. Great irons.

The J15 CB are almost exactly what you are describing and have a beveled leading edge to help with turf interaction. I have had mine in play for 4 rounds now and when I first saw them and their "fat" soles, I was skeptical, but they are true performers if you can find a set. You can also check out something like the i20/25/200/210... I have had all of those but the 210 and they were pretty good, not great. Srixon has nice options, too.... 5x5 will have wider soles and the 7x5 series will be a little more narrow but a very nice compact players iron with GI help.

Doesn't sound like you really are looking for a wider sole, but rather more bounce?

The Srixon Z-Series has a really nice leading edge grind which prevents digging.

You can get a smaller 7-series irons or the larger 5-series. They are really really good irons.

Enjoying this thread. Have played a bunch of the irons listed. They all have different bounce angles and the sole width additionally affects how the bounce ‘plays’ as well, with wider equating to more. Add it all up and the turf interaction can be very different between models. For me, that is where the choice gets made based on personal fit. I find I like the Bridgestone J15CB soles the most (surprised myself how much I like them off fluffy or tight lies) with Ping right there as well (and the Pings vary a lot by model; look at iBlades vs i210). On the Srixon v-sole, I like it more on the 700 and 900 series. I found it a little thick sometimes off turf with the 500 series. But there is no doubt it works; in sloppy conditions, all of these irons do well. And really, they are nice overall designs. The differences are easier to feel hitting off grass as mats disguise so much. If you can try them on turf, much better.

Wide sole vs bounce etc is heavily player dependant as well. The 919F sole design did not work when I demoed it the other day. Felt like it was catching. Switched to my AP2 and first shot felt like it was out of a cannon. Way better turf interaction for my swing. As a higher bounce option the i210 was great. Listened to the Q&A on TXG tonight and Ian was saying that he finds steeper guys do really well with pre-worn leading edges which is probably why I'm so fond of the 716CB/MB and 718 AP2 sole design. The 716 AP2 felt like a sledgehammer through the turf.

I don't know what a "preworn" sole is but I do know that a lot of the Japanese brand clubs have a muted leading edge with a lot of sole camber. Bridgestone's for example and most Mizuno JPX clubs. The Srixon irons with their V sole in effect are like this too (the V sole is just a marketing spin on a cambered sole). Cambered soles don't dig as much as a club with a sharp leading edge, bounce being equal. Most Bridgestone and Mizuno's have low bounce though, so even though the sole is cambered they will never resist digging as much as something like a Ping which has more discrete bounce.

Semi circle ground off the LE. There's a huge difference between how the 718 goes through the ground vs the 716. My Ping i200 were okay but quite high bounce. I play on a couple of links courses and I didn't love them on that. Mostly I play lush soft fairways though and they were very forgiving.

The Bridgestone CB-X seems to have a fairly wide sole. Never played them but giving serious thought to picking some up. I can get steep on my swing path with irons and a wide sole can help that when its a problem or really wet outside.

All Clubs subject to change relative to my last bad round of golf......
