2020 Tokyo Olympics qualification

Langer against the 18 Germans ranked ahead of him. I'd like to see the odds on it anyway.

You mean a German National Championship, as in cycling? That could be interesting.

No, I was struck that Langer is supposedly the 18th best pro German golfer in that country. I don't see it but then someone pointed out that the senior tour doesn't count for diddly in the OWGR. Now his rankling makes sense to me.

If you had a field of the 20 "best" professional golfers what would be the odds on Langer straight up against those guys? You got Kaymer, Siem, Cejka and ? It is merely a discussion for discussion's sake. It matters not, just an interesting thing going on.

Any other countries or examples where the senior or a lady from a particular country is likely the "better" pick straight up in a competition? Miguel Angel Cabrera is close but he is just 49. He is the only one I can think of but I am admittedly not very worldly in my following of golf.

I don't envy Rory the decision of whether to compete for Ireland or Team GB. He'll catch flak either way. I'd go with Ireland, but then I'm a big Golf Weekly podcast fan.

Thought Rory had put this question to bed by saying he won't participate in the Olympics, ever.

Perhaps he did, and I don't remember it. I just remember the initial hubbub when he offhandedly mentioned he would probably play for Team GB because of his UK passport. You'd have thought he was advocating peeing on the Irish flag the way people got upset.

Hey guys, I don't remember facts. Just drama.

You too??!?!?

They are too stubborn to change the format, but a team event would be much better than a stroke play competition against a (relatively) crappy field....

Or make it ALL the top 60 players in the world are automatically qualified and then fill in another 60 based on world ranking by countries not represented. That would help at least make it a more meaningful stroke play event.

We know Garrigus will not be eligible. WADA is the party responsible for the drug rules on the PGA Tour.

Gee thanks?!? :) My intent with that post was to-remind-again-that all of the posts blaming the PGA Tour, Pga of America, and USGA for his suspension were misdirected. WADA is the entity that determines what is illegal and any sport that is in the Olympics need to comply.

Which brings up the question....are NHL players still eligible for the Olympics? How does the NHL have looser rules on pot use? Hmmm.

Lol. I love golf. Love it, love the history, and have played and been around it since I was a tyke.

But as an Olympic sport? Still struggling with that. And thus subjecting our players or any other tour to WADA rules is absurd to me.

The NHL didn't participate in the last Olympics in Korea. It is generally asssumed is that they will go to Bejing, but that isn't a done deal and team selection is years into the future.

Pot is legal in what... about half of the places where there are NHL teams?

Thank you for the heads up on hockey in the Olympics. That would explain why they are not following the WADA guidelines.
