Working on my house

My life is pretty empty really lol, small family, couple of friends. Golf is consuming most of my mental space most of the time, and now that weathers getting better Ill be back into outside projects and working on the house/yard. Me and my pal own a boat together, but since he got into golf (and i got back into it) weve taken the boat out like twice in the last 2 seasons.

For me, family always comes first and job second. I'm 47 and my two kids are grown and out of the house, so its just me and my wife now which affords me a lot of free time. I've been working part-time at my course for almost 12 years now and have loved every minute of it.

I got hooked on golf back in 2000 when I gave up playing music. I was obsessed with music since I was a child. I grew up playing in bands and eventually spent a lot of time traveling and in and out of clubs. But after 10 years of late nights I'd had enough. Between family, a full time job, rehearsals and gigs, I was burning the candle at both ends. A close friend and I stopped playing music at the same time and picked up golf. Golf became my new obsession.

Golf has become a refuge for me. I've been a firefighter in a busy department for the last 17 years, and over that time I've seen some crazy stuff, along with some very sad and heartbreaking moments. Playing golf forces me to focus on golf. Its hard to think about anything else while I'm on the course. I only work 10 days a month as a firefighter (24 hour shifts) so I have plenty of time to spend chasing the ball around.

We now have a 3 year old grandson who lives 1.5 hours away, and when he comes to stay with us for a few days every few weeks, I don't even think about golf.

Almost dead last. I thought being retired I'd have all the time in the world, but I find I'm actually busier than ever. I consider it a victory to get out to the range.

Time spent on something (doing, thinking about) --- does that equal importance? If so golf is maybe #1. Don't tell my wife.

Golf falls into a tie for all leisure activities. They all get pushed to the side the instance there is something more important with family going on. I am ok with that.

1. God

2. Family

3. Friends

4. Golf

Get these out of order, and you'll find yourself with a lot of hurting relationships. Golf should never be put in front of other people. If you walk off the golf course after a bad day and it affects the way you treat those around you, you have made golf an idol, and it has too much of a priority in your life.
