Removing your hat at end of round

Recommended Posts

Men raised with manners take off hats when shaking hands, don't typically piss in the trees, and wash their hands after visiting the restroom.

But I agree, some people were raised without manners, so are not aware of what's proper. They might artificially remove their hat though thinking that's the correct way to end the round, even though they may have pissed in the trees; least they try.

Unless someone was a member of a private club, they wouldn't necessarily know about removing hats in private clubhouses. Manners are not economic based. Most public course grill rooms don't care one way or another, so its no surprise hat removal is likely based on someone's orientation. I remove my hat regardless. My last two private clubs and all private clubs I have played restrict hat wearing in clubhouses. Also, after golf, most members visit the restroom to wash up before heading to the grill room with hat in hand. Some more modern private clubs, however, do allow wearing hats in the grill room, depends on club culture.

Those with manners don't judge others.

Judging the behavior of a person as right from wrong is my religious and Constitutional right as a Catholic man. Nothing to do with a hat on or off, yes sir, no sir, thank you, open door manners. Sorry, but you seem to have missed that when growing up. I just judged you as not knowing the difference. Good luck with that. :beach:

The New Testament taught that we should not judge others. "Do not judge others lest ye be judged", Matt 7:1. Only God has the right to judge.

There are about 7 billion of us who missed that part. :-)

As an older guy, too, I respectfully disagree. I have always removed my hat (and sunglasses) after a round when I shake hands with the members of my group. I truly feel this is a sign of respect, however, I do not judge others that don't.

I am a 'older guy' also, and I always remove my hat and sunglasses before shaking hands. Why? I guess because I was taught to look someone in the eyes when I shake their hand.

Being polite to others has changed or gotten diminished in this day and age I guess. Yet another reason I dislike playing with others I suppose. Especially the younger folks.

I remove my hat at the end to shake hands. I never did. Then, my son started competing in Jr. PGA last year and they taught the kids to do it. I thought that I should be doing it, too. It is a sign of respect. But, it's not a big deal if somebody doesn't do it. To each his own. Respect is so much more than where your hat happens to be.

I think our society, in general, is getting more and more impersonal - cold. I say that because I regularly make kind gestures and regularly it's met with some surprise. Haha... (holding a door, helping a lady pick up something she dropped, etc...)

I have no problem with it. Kind of gentlemanly gesture, I guess. One thing I notice a lot, though, is after removing the hat, they brush their hair back with their hand, then shake hands. Sort of nasty, shaking someones sweaty hand.

I'm an old guy, and this recently came up at the conclusion of a round - and the other guys kind of gave me an odd look(s) when I left my hat on as we all shook hands.

So we all head to the clubhouse to drop off our carts and turn in our scorecards, and one after another they all troop inside WITH THEIR HATS ON, including me.

I'm still getting a bit of a cold shoulder so I ask, "Sorry about not taking my hat off on the green, but how come you guys didn't take your hats off when entering the building?"

Is this tradition outdated?

I typically just leave my hat on and shake the hands of the folks I played with. To me, there is no lack of or increased 'respect' shown by the hat move.

but tradition = remove your hat before shaking hands.

I assume that the older generation will view not removing your hat as blasphemy.

But I am 'older' generation as well - I just view it as a silly gesture that means nothing...in the same vein as saying "bless you" when someone sneezes, crossing yourself whenever you pass by a church, holding your breath when you pas by a cemetery...all silly.

I do still hold the door for others, open my wife's car door first, allow others to go ahead of me in situations...but removing your hat after a round...nope.

What say you?

(Possible Larry David moment to ensue)

I suppose in the golfing sense I am regarded as a Senior golfer (age 53) and I remove my hat before shaking hands. I do this based on how I was taught to conduct myself on the golf course. If the gesture is met in the same manner, great. If my playing partners do not remove their hats I am certainly not offended. I would much rather focus on whether we got along playing a round of golf and enjoyed each other's company. That is more meaningful to me.

I’m 37 and newer to golf (3rd season). I play at a private club where it’s prob 75% of them do it. Most of the guys I play with are in their 40’s up to 70’s. To me respect is shaking hands and thanking each player for playing. A hat is trivial to me. I’m not easily offended and historically as noted this really isn’t tradition. I still use sir and ma’am, hold doors, make eye contact when I acknowledge people, etc. If someone wants to judge me because I do not remove my hat they have personal issues.

One of the first pieces of golf etiquette I was taught (early 50s now, been playing for all but the first 7 of those) was to remove your hat on the first tee, last green and whenever you're inside. It's just reflex now.

You don't need a hat inside anyway, unless the fire extinguishers go off and you want to keep it out of your beer ....

I agree with the above post that removing the hat is too showy. By the time you putt out on 18 your playing partners know if you’ve treated them with respect.

During the age of COVID that's what I've been doing instead of a handshake.

Take the hat off and a slight wave to playing partners. Respectful and not putting anyone at risk of transmission.

I'm all for removing the hat, but I think an additional sign of respect is to not run your hand through your sweaty hair just before you shake the guy's hand.

Although who knows if the handshake will ever return to any great degree.  Seems like a fist bump doesn't merit removing the hat.

Yeah exactly. Seems so obvious. Not sure why some don't get that.

Crazy, I have honestly never heard that before. I take my sunglasses off when talking to a cop, but that is more of a CYA move than a respect thing.

Great thread topic!

just my opinion but I do like to honor this tradition, simply for keeping the tradition that was exemplified by my Dad-who introduced me to the game.

I won't suggest that anyone is wrong for doing this, but watch at about 44:13 here to see the tradition in 1963:

Nothing wrong with being polite and looking someone in the eyes while shaking their hand.  It's just the right thing to do.
