12 & 16 at Augusta are Uphill???

Perhaps I am mentally challenged, but from what I read, both of these holes are slightly uphill...I could maybe see 16 (especially back right green), but 12 seems like a decent drop to the green...instead it's showing a 4 foot uphill approach?

I can't help but think that global warming is somehow responsible for this.

Always thought of 12 as a slightly elevated tee and slightly elevated green for a level approach. So 1-4 yards uphill I could believe.

 

16 yea. Uphill for sure.

That entire place a series of hills. I was amazed when I got into my first practice round.

Been there. TV does this no justice. It is insanely hilly. From 10 tee you only see the tops of the trees!!! I agree, both of these are uphill.

Tough part of 12 aside the small narrow green ... is the tee boxes are angled away from the green

The toughest part of that hole I have found is the wind. Everyone has there own little thing; one Masters champ told me he won’t hit until the flag on 11 is limp, a members told me he won’t hit until he feels it on his left cheek, a caddie told me he looks at the treetops. It’s such a devilish little hole, because it punishes right handers so much more than lefty’s in my opinion. If each player were to aim at the center, a right handed push push or pull finds water short right and pine straw long left. A lefty finds the green either short left or long right, not easy putts by any means but still easier than dropping.

Part of the illusion from a fan perspective on #12 is the fact that we can't see the green from the actual teeing ground. The slope directly behind the tee on #12 rises severely. We just can't get close enough to the tee to observe the green from that elevation.

The fact that 99% of the population would swear #12 plays downhill verifies it to be as great in design as we perceive it to be.

Water flows downhill...and it flows away from 12 and 16 greens...so yes, they are uphill holes.

So...I'm no genius, but I know for a fact 12 is down hill. Been there...seen it with my own eyes. But then illusion talk started so I had to factually find out. Just pulled up Google earth and got an elevation level from tee box and the green on 12. The two tee boxes are either 173 or 174 feet above sea level and the green is 163 feet on the left side and 164 feet on the right side. Definitely down hill.

 

16 is definitely up hill. Tee box is 205 feet above sea level. Front of the green is 207, back right is 211, Sunday pin is 209.
