Anyone put PutterTape over Sound Slot

Hope this is the correct place to post this. If not, please advise.

Just got a Damascus Byron Morgan DH89. Love the soft edges, a result of the Tai Treatment. Anyways, I love sound slots and the response/sound I get currently from them. I plan to game it and wanted to put PutterTape on the sole. Was curious if anyone has experience with this and if the PutterTape changes the sound feedback.

A secondary concern is also if debris gets into the sound slot and just gets caught by the PutterTape.

If no one has experience, I'll take one for the team, but wanted to get feedback first as I've had some difficulty getting PutterTape as of late.

Here are some pics of the new putter.

I have never heard of "putter tape" I have heard of and used lead tape. If weight is a concern and the sound bothers you use adhesive tape or electrical tape. If you want it snazzy use chrome auto trim tape which weighs next to nothing.

Such a simple solution to a simple problem! I'm smacking myself in the head for not thinking of this.

PutterTape is just a fancy tape that's pre-cut to fit in the sole of a blade putter. I have OCD about this stuff so just buy it rather than trying to cut out the tape and make it look nice. It has nothing to do with weights, just to protect the sole on putters. Here's a pic of PutterTape on my Scotty 009M.

I’ve got quite a few “beached” putters, my most widely used is this Newport Beach T. I’ve put lead tape over the slot, which slightly mutes the sound/feel a bit, giving me a “softer” sound/feel, which I do not care for, so although this sound/feel is an individual thing, just put a piece of putting tape on and see what ya think. It’s not like you’re going to have a lot of $$, effort or materials invested in the experiment. As it is not as thick as lead tape, I’m surmising that the difference in sound/feel will negligible, though again, this is an individual thing.

As far as putting tape, I don’t know anyone that game’s a putter with putter tape on their putter, lol.

Regarding debris getting into the slot, I have never had this problem with any of my beached putters so as long as you’re not planning on slamming it into the ground/dirt, you’re golden and I wouldn’t even concern yourself with it as that’s one less piece of “noise” that ya have to clutter your mind with?

It’s a gorgeous putter Brother??!!

2q5wyil16fry.jpeg

Just take it out and make some putts with it!!

Putting tape on a gamer, huh, lol??

And these guys gave me s*** about my Clear View iron covers, lmao???

Besides, I don’t ground my putter, lol

I know this is about tape over a sound slot but what does a sound slot do other than producing more sound? Does it give a different feel to the putter based on sound?

For me, I like it because of the sound it creates. Different for everyone but I use sound as feedback. There's a distinct pitch and ring when I hit it correctly. If I de-loft, then it creates a "dud" sounding lower pitch with little ringing, if I loft it too much, then it creates a higher pitch and I feel like it rings a little longer. I use the feedback during the course of the round to figure out what I'm doing on each putt.

Some do say it makes it feel softer, but I haven't been able to try the exact same putter with and without a sound slot so can't say I can prove or disprove this argument. All of my putters with sound slots are Carbon or Damascus steel which are already soft to begin with. I've never tried a Stainless steel with a sound slot.

LOL ... you have pics of the clear view iron covers??

I like my things looking clean and new. I use iron covers on my Miuras so they don't get bag chatter. Like I said ... OCD

Thanks for the response and I like the sound of (no pun intended) audible feedback for what you're doing. Maybe I'd like to try one but don't want to spend a crazy amount on a putter right now.

I hear ya ... I first experimented with sound slots (some call them "beached") with a older Scotty Cameron Newport. Found a local club builder that made them before. They will take off anywhere from 5-8g of weight though. Was able to buy and get sound slot for under $350 (this was like 5 years ago).

Yeah looking around the only one I know of is Carbon putters and their putters get expensive real fast. Adding a sound slot is $75 so I'll be on the lookout for a used putter with a sound slot.
