Electric Carts/Trolleys buying help

Recommended Posts

Very interested in purchasing an electric cart/trolley. Trying to keep the price around $1000. I don't need a unit with a remote control. Main things I am looking for are if the unit loses power, need to be able to push it without being stuck on the course. Would like one that has a long lasting and durable battery. Also one that is well built and if it needs work, being able to locate a service center within the US and in California is even better. Just looking for something I can count on and is worth my money. Would appreciate any suggestions and help. Thanks.

Following this discussion. I am looking for an electric cart also - looking at Motocaddy and MGI. Both companies appear to have similar models and very close in price.

I see that MGI carts are sold on eBay by an authorized seller....so if an eBay 15% or 20% coupon pops up, that would be a nice discount (usually $100 max discount) on an MGI cart.

I am looking at the zip 3 as the 1 feature I like is being able to advance the cart with a preset distance. The Navigator with remote looks nice but I don’t think it’s worth the extra $550+ just to have a remote and downhill braking.

Kangaroo only checks off some of the boxes, but could be worthwhile if found used and reasonably priced.

They are made and serviced on the east coast.

Very solidly built with a way to unlock the wheels from the drive motor in order to "freewheel"

Battery longevity is the issue with all but the newest kangaroo lithium powered unit.

The new litho units are beyond the desired budget amount. Battery longevity goes hand in hand with battery weight as well. I'll retire my clubs when I have a problem lifting a 25 lb gel battery out of my trunk, My take is that a new GEL lead acid battery could be a $100 expense on a yearly basis, if used frequently. I'm willing to accept a $1-$1.50 cost per round for battery replacement. Going with litho may be less expensive per use over the long haul, but expensive when you do have to replace it.

The MGI's do have freewheeling. You just have to postiion the rear wheels further away from the motor (there are 2 grooves that the wheels lock into - the closest to the motor is in gear and the further out grove is freewheel) there is a button to puch on the spoke of the wheel to adjust. There is a video on their website - I think it is the one where they show you how to put it together.

I've had an MGI Zip X3 since last July and now have over 260mi on it. I have several posts about it on this forum and a review on Amazon. I hit a deal on it on Amazon and paid just over $600 for it, but most places have it for about $1,000. If fits all your criteria. As stated above, it will freewheel (and the same feature on the wheels enable you to reverse them for storage so it is very compact), but it is of course heavier than a dedicated push cart --- it'll get you home. I'm not sure about service except that they have a place in Oceanside (SoCal) called Kaddymart that seems to be their main service facility. They also have a lot of DIY videos. Anyway, it's been great.

I have a new Kangaroo Z Series, and the weight would make it very difficult to use in the free wheel function. It is great under power, but I wouldn't want to push it very far.

I have the Motocaddy S3 with the 36 hole lithium battery. I can't imagine ever having to push it as the battery life is so good but it seems to freewheel anyway if you did have to push it.

I have a QOD, it seems to fit a bunch of the criteria. No remote available, so no remote to go bad. Drive axle bearings are "one-way", so that it freewheels forward with little resistance. Made in Australia, but I had great response from online customer service on a Saturday evening. Lithium ion battery guaranteed to last for 36 holes initially, and for at least 18 holes after 3 years. Current price just about $1000. One thing not asked, it folds up really small, like the size of a case of beer or a little larger. I've had mine for a little over 6 months, and have no complaints so far.

I appreciate everyone's responses. I am still doing some reading up these. I have used a push cart for the last 15 years as I love to walk. However, I am starting to develop some soreness after rounds and I didn't used to have(just turned 51, and in pretty good shape). I usually walk rounds on Saturday and Sunday. The course I play is a little hilly and does take a little effort pushing a cart. Just looking at ideas at maybe being able to enjoy my rounds a little more.

Using a Motocaddy currently, I've had a clubrunner and kangaroo in the past. The motocaddy is easier to transport and has a lithium battery where as both the others used a deep cycle battery which was considerably heavier. The motocaddy also freewheels as is, no need to make any adjustments if the battery were to fail.

  • 3 weeks later...

I use a LectricCaddie. I bought it used for 300. New they are over 1500. Never had a problem with it. The battery is small but will go 27 holes easily. I have a trickle charger on it when not in use. It's fast enough that it out walks me and I walk fast. Has a remote, also handle controls and will free wheel if needed, though I've never had to. I made my own hill wheel so it does not tip over going up steep hills

I wouldn't want to push my Motocaddie S1 uphill if I didn't have to, it's pretty heavy. But it does freewheel by default, if you push on it when the power is turned off it rolls just fine. Got 250+ rounds on mine and never been close to running out of battery so it's never been something I needed but good to know it's not a problem just in case.

If you need it to freewheel *backward* there is a little lever on each wheel that you have to unlock. By default, it moves freely if you push it forward but pulling it backward you have to disengage the clutch in each wheel or else it would roll very stiffly if at all.

Seriously the remote control is the fun part of it in a big way. How good is that when I am off line to find my ball, located it and just call the trolley to come by itself with the remote.

The drawback is the significant distraction factor fiddling with the remote.

Saying that, for the OP playing hilly course mostly, or any courses with a lot of water everywhere (they have not invented amphibian carts yet) , it probably is better to manually control it most of the time.

We have a fair ammount of water on our course, and I use my Kangaroo in the manual mode quite a bit. Most of the guys that have remote carts at my course have gone swimming.

Appreciate the comments on the various e-carts that are available and feedback on use!

I had one of the Sun Mountain E-Carts way back that used a DC motor in the single front wheel and a lead acid battery.

Well, finally gave up on this after many years as the batteries available were heavy and it just was not working well. That has been about 5 or 6 years ago and have been pushing a ClicGear around since. BUT, there are many E-carts available and after much study and decided to go with the MGI Zip Navigator.

Q. Not sure if the company (MGI) with all the competition will be around for many years, SO would it be wise to get an extra battery pack for the Navigator while they are available. Very much a custom battery and not something you will find at the local battery store. Yes, expensive but might give life to this E-Cart for several more years IF the company folds up.

Is there a shelf life to these batteries?

Anyway, my MGI Navigator will be here on Monday and will try it and may go with an extra battery if I like the E-cart.

I had a CartTek and returned it. It was the fancier 1500LTD model. Way to tippy on anything but flat ground and it had issues with some of the parts (umbrella holder getting loose). It was also pretty slow compared to all other power carts others had at our club. I now have an MGI Zip Navigator and its the best thing since sliced bread. Super easy to use, durable, very stable on anything reasonable but on very steep inclines need to hold it but that is normal with any of these really. Costco now sells them. If you don't want remote (the Navigator is the best handling remote I've ever seen), then get one of the models without it. Love my MGI.

I can't say for sure but it appears the MGI Navigator lithium batteries might be serviceable. Just judging that theory based on them not being a sealed unit. It may be possible that they can be disassembled and the cells replaced.

New front on the AT (All Terrain) Navigator....independent dual wheels

Appears the front section may be interchangeable with the regular Navigator:

Have decided to go with the Navigator AT instead and use the free 30 day return, free ship on my Ebay purchase.

The new AT is due out in about a month....much better front end design.

I'm following this thread too. Going to finally splurge on an electric caddy.

I'm torn between getting the MGI Zip Navigator, I'll probably wait for the AT since it's posted above or the CartTek 2019 GRi-1500LTD.

I'm in the Los Angeles area, anybody know where they sell these in person or have an opinion between the 2.

I just got the MGI Zip Navigator. I had emailed MGI USA to ask if the AT was going to be available in the US, the reply was "not at this time"

That being said, I've used it on my home course, we've got a few large elevations and the regular Zip Nav did fine, even across the slope. The only time I dumped it was when I accidently turned it into a curb and it flopped backwards.

Having seen someone with a Stewart X9 Follow in action, I think that will be worth the extra $500 over the Navigator AT just due to the bluetooth following tech in the cart....just amazing!

Placed order directly via Stewart website.

Also added the extra "HedgeHog" rear wheels.
