The MacGregor 693 thread

Recommended Posts

There has been posts of GolfWRX member 693s in the past but no thread that is dedicated to this classic model. I hope the members that frequent this board posts their 693s. Here is the 693 driver I am having Dave Wood restore. The picture without sole plate is what he sent to me this morning. Dave said in the email, "Took this photo last week of your 693 with the sole plate removed and thought you might like to see. You own a super rare solid block!" Can't wait to see it completed. Now determining what stain I want applied. I am partial to the Mike Donald M85W stain.

It is my hope that others who love the MacGregor 693 will post this thread so we have a place to come to and admire the beauty. Thanks to all.

These are the 2, 3 and 4 woods I have to complete the set. The 3 wood I purchased separately from the 1, 2 and 4. The 3 wood has neck numbers and a nice tight horseshoe grain. I'll send these back to Dave Wood to restore next season.

Also, my assortment of Chicago Cubs hats (2016 playoffs, 2016 World Series, 2016 World Series Champions, and 2017 Opening Series gold trimmed hat). Go Cubs Go!!! :D

Just one 693, a 3 wood. Found it at a thrift store along with 10 other persimmons (M43 2 wood, nice set of Citations, a Joe Powell D, et. al.) a couple of years back. Think I paid $3.00 for it. Had been nicely refinished, reshafted with a TTDG S400. Never hit a golf ball with it, S400 being to much shaft. I do like the head shape and swept back sole plate on 693's. Maybe one day will find a D.

This thread was started at the perfect time for me. Just joined the 693 club last week and have put together a set of 693's that will take some work to get looking like they belong together, but I am prepared for the challenge at this point. The 2 is actually in the best condition and is a beautiful club. The 3 and 4 are under a coat of black paint that I will be removing to see what we are actually looking at, but they appear to be nice clubs. The 1 I took a gamble on, but for $30.00 I figured the worst it will be is a learning experience. It has an Adila graphite shaft that I have determined is most likely a .335 tip so should be perfect for a TT Dynamic reshafting. Have to do some work on the back weight also and I do not currently have any way to weigh it so I will have to sort that out. Will be a very fun experience putting these all together I am hoping. I now have my Maltby repair manuals that are fantastic references and already have come in very handy. Will be a long road with this set, but will be a lot of fun also I am thinking.

This is the goal I hope to attain. I am certain to fall extremely short of the master Dave Woods, but this picture of his 693T restore is my primary motivation for this project... I could look at those two pictures all day, a guy can dream can't he?

Dave Wood is a terrific goal to set. That's the result I want as well so I just went to Dave directly. :)

The pleasure was all mine Fred! We'll have to do it again soon. We need to play a round (or few) together. Know any good courses in the Boston area? ;)

Thrilled beyond the moon with Dave Wood’s amazing refinish (total rebuild) of my 693T. It came out better than I imagined. The stampings are really classy. I love the gold Tommy Armour stamp and the burnt umber color we decided to go with in the score lines . Dave Put in new face screws as well as a lock screw in the bore through hole. He was amazed at the large carbon spot on the toe and thought it was awesome. The finish is a semi gloss. Just love it!! 3jiu6nxzz8qg.jpeg

Another outstanding restoration by Dave Wood! This is definitely a truly outstanding 693, solid block, and an incredible carbon deposit at the apex of the toe. Doesn't get much better than this one!!!

Agreed! I have my 693 coming back sometime this week. Will post pictures when I get it. Both Fred's and my 693 are solid block, which Dave said was ultra rare.

Northplatteriver,

I asked Dave Wood about this. Keep in mind Dave customized Norman’s M43 which the Shark used to win the British Open. Below is what Dave told me:

“Well it's actually a mixture of elements. There's the natural colors in the wood, then the vintage dye that MacGregor applied. I applied scarlet dye for first, then my Greg Norman rose walnut blend.... I applied natural paste grain filler.”

I’m thrilled !! And it’s not retired yet, will hit it this summer after it totally cures.
