Graphite Hybrid Shaft in Putter Experiment... Any Tried This?

Curious what kind of feel/ performance I would get out of a graphite shaft in a putter so I installed an Aldila RIP a 105 X Hybrid shaft I had laying around in my Odyssey RSX 001 last night. Tipped it close to 3" to get the right OD for the hosel and assembled it to 35". Rolled it on my indoor putting mat... have to say, I'm thoroughly impressed with the feel thus far.

 

At times I've felt like that RSX head - and any milled SS head/insert really - can be a little "clicky" for my taste. The graphite shaft seems to completely eliminate that "clicky" feel and makes the impact feel sooooo smooth and a little softer - more similar to a carbon head. Also seems like not as much torque/twisting on heel or toe strikes as with the steel shaft. Haven't hit any long putts or rolled it on grass yet but I'm definitely gonna keep testing.

 

Anyone tried and/or game a SS head with a graphite shaft? Feedback on feel/ performance?

I put a Matrix HD10 hybrid shaft in a putter. I didn't really like it, as you have to cut the shaft down so much it ends up being a really light shaft. Just didn't feel right to me.

reporting back.. this experiment is officially over. While I absolutely loved feel and feedback the graphite shaft gave, the lighter weight of the graphite just didn't work well for consistency. Just wasnt enough meat behind the club head and was especially noticeable on slower greens.

 

Aldila, if you decide to make a putter specific version of this shaft (37" @ 120-130g) I'm all in.

I did this too. Used a broken Matrix 3 wood shaft. Put it into a stainless Ping Anser 2 head. Super light, but I used it to help with my putting stroke. I had a problem with stopping at impact. With this setup, You really had to hit and follow through.

I was working on something like this, design-wise with a bigger diameter shaft. Then Break Through Golf came along with theirs so I'm not pursuing the design right now because this looks pretty good: https://breakthroughgolftech.com

Love the look of the Aldila shaft. I can imagine that it would be too light, with 103g starting at 42". By the time you cut it down to putter length, you'd loose a lot of weight.

I just bought a KBS CT Tour for my ER 1.2. I play it at 33" and the shaft if about 100g at that length. Feel is great. I'm very confident with it now.

Easy to add weight so if you liked the feel otherwise, I wouldn't let that stop you. Many ways to do it but I prefer these since it's easy to change out and try different amounts.

Was hitting a few balls off a mat and the head snapped off my driving iron right at the hosel. The shaft had been pulled twice and I have no doubt too much heat and force was used during the last pull. So it was either a $200 alignment rod or.....a putter shaft. I used an AD IZ 95x which has a pretty decent torque rating at 2* (S3 rates it even lower) and the weight is about 30 grams lighter than the KBS CT Tour I have in my other putters and fairly close in weight to the Odyssey stroke lab. Just needed a slightly heavier head and a little counterweight. Went with  Tri Hot 5K DW which is 265 grams and 10 grams heavier than my other putter heads. Cut 5 grams off a 25 gram Superstroke counter weight for the other end. Finished total weight and SW a very close to the steel shafted putters I have. Puts a great roll on the ball and the feel off the face isn't overly muted.

I have a matrix red tie in one of my scottys, feels just as good as anything i've used, but looks cooler.
