If you use a 5 iron taper tip shaft in a 6 iron, you will butt trim it 1/2" less than a corresponding 6 iron shaft and will be soft stepping it 1x. Most won't be able to tell the difference in feel (approx 1/3 flex) but some will. Hope this helps.

Thanks TT2017

I was just curious what if it is. Now I know cut length of typical 5 iron.

Could you tell me typical irons (3 iron to PW, and 50*) cut length?

What dose BBTG stand for? (Sorry, I can just hit the balls lol)

Thanks Davewn,

How's about 6 iron taper tip shaft in a 5 iron?

If it can be used, So how much should I cut 6 iron taper tip shaft (uncut 38.5") for 5 iron?

Just as an approximate set of lengths, then start at a 3 iron with a raw cut length of 37.5" and reduce the length by 0.5" for each consecutive iron, i.e. 3-37.5", 4-37", 5-36.5" etc.

It is common to reduce the 9 iron to PW by 0.25" instead of the 0.5"

None of this is a 'standard', there really is no such thing. It also depends entirely on the BBTG of the iron heads in question. BBTG is Bottom of Bore To Ground, which is the amount the iron head adds to the length of the shaft to equal the playing length. This again in NOT a standard and varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and indeed even between models in a manufacturers own range. Thus a 37.5" raw cut shaft in a 3 iron in Manufacturer A with a BBTG of 1.25" will play at 38.75"(plus grip) but the same raw cut shaft length in Manufacturer B with a BBTG of 1" will play at 38.5"(plus grip).

The lesson is that there are NO STANDARDS. Measure twice, cut once. It's the only way to truly know.

If you know the actual make and model of a set of clubs then if you ask a specific question then I bet someone will answer with an exact answer as to that make and model's standard.

One more thing, using a 5 iron in a 6 iron head is an example of 'soft stepping' i.e. making the club play a little weaker than the expected flex. Using a 6 iron in a 5 iron head is an example of 'hard stepping' i.e. making the club play a little firmer than the expected flex. The permutations for precision club fitting using these 'stepping' methods are somewhat endless and can be quite creative.

Whatever you are doing then good luck.
