Average Age of Junior Playing Adult Irons

I was in eBay and found a guy that would sell me a brand new set of Callaway Steelbead XR iron 5 iron thru AW for $425. They were ladies clubs with a ladies flex. I would have needed to cut them down and re-grip them which would have added to the price but I would have a new set for $500. That is a very good deal. The F8 irons retailed for over $800 but I didn’t pay that much. To get the Flynn irons it would have been about $350. So it comes down to what you want to spend.

My daughter is 10, and is considered one of the best players in the world for her age. She swings the driver over 85 mph and carries her 7 iron nearly 140 yards. She is 58" tall and weights 85 lbs. Not saying all this to boast, but wanted to show that I have quite a bit of experience with fitting a talented junior.

She switched to adult clubs in the fall of 17. She played VT Max prior to adult clubs. The real trick is finding a shaft that can be cut down enough without destroying the characteristics of the shaft. After much effort we found success in the Recoil ES line. She used the F1 450 ES until just recently switching to the F2 460 ES. Had to cut a good 3.5 inches off, but the shaft still performs well. We also had to special order them from UST in .355 tip because most retailers only stock them in .370. She is using Mizuno JPX 900 Forged heads. She is also using the Recoil shafts in her driver and fairways.

There was an immediate improvement in ball flight, dispersion, and spin. Her scores came down instantly as well. She went from a 7.4 index to a 3.2 in about 90 days. I believe the added weight was really good for her. The total club weight went up about 14 grams over her VT Max with the 450, and about 22 grams with the 460.

It can be very tricky to fit juniors with higher club head speed, but it is possible. It is especially difficult if cost is a barrier. I have well over 2k in my daughters bag, and she is due for a new set. That's the tough thing with kids... They grow out of a set or two every year. We are getting some help from a couple of manufacturers now, so that helps.

Good luck!

For those who have customized the adult irons, what lie and loft angle did you use?

I'm a bit leery of such strong lofts on the adult irons, and I expect too much distance gaps between clubs.

Taylormade does offer customization so I'm looking into couple of degree flat and weaker.

I would look at mizuno Mp-18 MB specs and match those lofts with 1* flatter for anyone that is less than 63”. Of course it’s swing dependent re lie, but this should be a good start. Other OEMs will need to bent 3+ degrees flat.

How hard is it for a good clubmaker to bend cast clubs? My

daughter’s F8 irons are set at neutral and need to be bent 2 degrees flat. I spoke with Cobra and they said that case clubs can be bent 2 degrees either way but no more than that. If my club maker can’t do it, i can ship them back to Cobra and they can do it. I know that will take some time so i was trying to avoid that.

Anyone with a good bending machine should be able to take care of that for you and you should expect to pay around $5 per club. I would definitely not pay the cost of shipping just to bend some irons though... just call around until you find someone that will do it.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

Our Local dealer bends our wedges 1 degree down and don’t charge us a dime.

I tip them whenever I go in and they do something for me. That way they do things for me and move me to the head of the line. Being in business myself, I don't expect things for free.

For this year my son is 9 and he is playing 6-gw cobra max irons with Apollo junior steel shafts and a cobra pur 56* wedge with the same steel shaft and he is hitting them better then his Flynn junior irons. I think its based on the kid. Because all last year he complained that the clubs were too light. And after talking to Cleveland golf about their junior wedges and them telling me they use the same head weight as their adult clubs got me thinking. As of right now my son is hitting the ball better then he has ever had with his new irons.

Last year I built a set for my 11 year old “then”. So I had a set of Muira’s MC102 and purchased KBS 580 shafts only did 6-pw his wedges 54 and 58 sm6, driver TM SLDR 12* and SLDR 3 wood both shafted with the NV regular. It’s been a work in progress. On the range he can some really beautiful shots, Just doesn’t take the time to go through his preshot routine when on the course. He’s too hardheaded!
