Is the shot tracker only on the paid version, and is it used to calculate SG18 stats? I have the free version, haven't used it yet but I will be tomorrow.

Shot tracking is only available in the paid version of TheGrint. I have no idea about SG18 stats.

However, as a free member, you do get to try shot tracking free for one round. I tested shot tracking in multiple apps and found that I don't care for it in any app because it requires more interaction for every single shot. The extra distraction is not worth it. That is clearly a case of my personal preference.

I've tried at least 5 different iPhone apps (TheGrint, 18Birdies, SwingXSwing, Hole19, GolfNow and BirdieApps) because I wanted to determine my favorite. TheGrint is the winner. 18Birdies comes a distant second because TheGrint does such a great job with the yardage interface.

In my personal option, the primary benefits are:

  • Easy to use interface for measuring distance
  • Very accurate GPS
  • Free USGA handicap
  • Access to nearly any course
  • Support for both Google Maps and Apple Maps (on iPhone)

All of the above are available for free! However, I pay to be a premium member because they deserve it. Membership is equivalent to a sleeve of ProV1s and I am more than capable of putting a sleeve OB in any given round, so TheGrint is not asking for much :)

Yeah I went and threw down the $20 for pro access. Very good app, simple to use as fast. Really like the HC index feature, and also the stats tracking is nice. No SG18, but the only app I know that does that is BeBrassie, and no offense to them... it was a horrible experience as far as GPS and shot tracking. In order to have SG18 done properly, you need to be uber precise with all your shot distances, including putts.

When I'm golfing, I'm there to have fun (maybe drink a few brews) and enjoy myself. Having to write down or record every detail about my round as I'm playing it makes it very annoying and takes enjoyment away. Post round it's just as bad because then you need to try to remember every shot if you didn't meticulously write it down before hand.

PS I don't mind the ProV1 investment analogy as I finally went a full 18 holes this weekend with one ball. :D

You can use the desktop website to input your scores, after your round. No impact to your round and fussing with a phone. My habit is to update the same day of the round, as all the shots are still fresh in my mind. Works great, and have been gathering stats since 2016!

I love the social aspect, stats, layout of the Grint .. > @mhawk709 said:

I love several things about The Grint, but shot input/tracking isn't one of them. The ability to, yes - but I agree that it feels cumbersome. It had been awhile since I used GolfPad, but I seem to remember it feeling more fluid and quick to log shots there.

It does eventually. I think it might take a bit of time (not sure how long (minutes, hours, days). My most recent round is on there, but I don't think it was immediately post round. Make sure you long press to upload (if on the app).

I have the Grint app and really like it for tracking simple stats like fairways hit, GIR, putts plus the scoring/handicap feature. Problem I have, is that you need an "Attest" from someone using the app that plays with you? Mostly i'm stopping by a course on business travel and just pair up with a twosome/threesome. How do i get attest to my score if they don't know what the Grint is or have an account?

This is the same problem that I have.

I've been using TheGrint for over a year now and have never had a score attested via the app. @bigmoneyp and @Flat4Boxer, I'm curious, for what reason do you need your scores attested?

In competition, I have a physical scorecard that my opponent and I sign. For the sake of my USGA handicap, I simply submit via TheGrint app. You do not need to have your score attested for your handicap, as described here.

Per the Grint Website:

"This represents the percentage of your last 20 scores of 18 holes that have been attested by another player.

The higher the percentage, the more trustworthy you handicap is. Red means is below 30%, Yellow is below 80%, once you are above that, circle becomes Green and you become pretty legit."

Prob means nothing in the sense of how accurate you handicap is but since I don't belong to a club when betting $$$ with others they would rather see 100% attested green rating over a red warning symbol on my handicap screen. I guess it kinda legitimizes the handicap to others that you are gonna bet money with if you don't carry a GHIN number.

Yeah, that red indicator on the dashboard bothered me for a while since none of my scores are attested. I can understand why it might bother your opponent. However, in reality, they have no basis for concern. They either believe you or they don't. An official GHIN Handicap Card or the equivalent TheGrint Virtual Handicap Card doesn't show an attested percentage.

I'd probably be happier if TheGrint got rid of that symbol. They don't have enough subscribers to leverage it (no one does!).

For anyone else having this problem, I'd suggest they simply pull up TheGrint Virtual Handicap Card and show that to your opponent:
