Driver: I have tried virtually every new driver from late last year through the current releases. The 2016 M2 with the Rogue Black 60 Stiff, which has been in the bag since November, has given me the best number so far. The only negative is that I had TM cut it down to 45, the SW dropped to C9...hence the need for all the lead tape. Six strips got it back up to roughly D3. Loft is 10.5 set 1 notch higher.

 

Fairway Wood: At the same time as the driver purchase, I picked up a M2 3 (15) with the Aldila Tour Blue 70 Stiff. It was good off the tee, but not so good off the ground (pretty much the story of my life with fwy woods). So I sold the 15 and picked up a 3 HL (16.5) and installed the stock Fuji 70 from the M1 fwy. Much better fit. So far the 3 HL has been just as solid as the std 3 wood off the tee and is much easier to elevate off the turf.

 

Hybrid/Irons/Wedges: Nothing has changed here. I still love my Nike VPCs and the Engage Wedges. I don't foresee changing them until the grooves are gone. The VR II hybrid 3 is good enough. It goes really high and plays the yardage that I need.

 

Putter: In December I swapped over to a Scotty Golo 5r and had some initial success. But I recently swapped back to my Nike Origin B2-01.

 

**I have an Epic head that I've been tinkering with. Its the std model, not the SZ. I've tried it with three or four shafts and just haven't been able to find a fit that is better than my M2. The closest in performance was with the Rogue Max 65 Stiff. I hit some really good drives with that combo, but the M2 ended up being a little longer and more consistent.

Right now..I'm working through my stash of Rzn Tour Plats and Dot Plats. TP5x is definitely on the radar to try. I'm hoping to get some samples from the rep if he ever shows back up. I tried the Chrome Soft X back in December and it was fine around the greens and on irons. Kind of fell out of the sky with driver (but in its defense I was hitting driver pretty rough during those rounds...might give it another go). The new ProV X is really good. New B330s is solid as well. We just got the 2017 Srixon Z Star line in. Need to those too.

 

I think right now if you told me I had to change...it would be the '17 ProVX. Launches off the driver and hop and stop around the greens. I loved the performance when I played it last week.

I think I'll like it. The one round I played with it, I hit it like a dog. Massive swing issues.

Updated thoughts on the TP5x golf ball:

 

I've played my last four rounds with the TP5x. The first round was horrible due to an inconsistent swing, but the last three have been better and better. I chose the TP5x because of its higher flight when compared to the TP5.

 

Off the driver, it's very solid. I like the higher launch and it's proven easy to work in either direction. Distance has been comparable to the Prov1X which is slightly longer than the Nike RZN Tour Platinum I've been using. I can't say it's any longer off the irons than any other ball I've tried, but again...the flight is good. Very easy to work and I can keep it low when needed. Short game control is nice...can spin it when needed or play the bump and run as well. Putts have been going in for the last few rounds so I think the ball is great off the putter.

 

I would say that this ball is 95% the same as a Prov1x in performance. They have a slightly different feel, but otherwise very close.

Sticking with the M2 driver as of now. Can't get an Epic dialed in. We are hosting a demo day with Callaway and TM next month so I'm hoping if we have some slow time I can hit the Epic with the fitter then. If it's the same guy from last year...he's really good. I might have a Flex 440 arriving soon though...so more fun things to tinker with.

 

Epic 5 wood showed up about two weeks ago. 3 wood will hopefully be here next week. The 5 wood is really good. Might be longer off the deck than my M2 3 HL. Hopes are high for the 3 wood after hitting the 5.

 

Took this week off from karate to let my shoulder heal up some. Doesn't hurt to swing a club...but some of the moves in class causes a lot of pain/soreness. So I've been getting a lot of practice in.

I have the SZ models. I liked the shape and size better. The regular Epic is more forgiving though.

 

Not sure the SZs are better than the M2 fwy. I had both the SZ 3 & 5 and the M2 3HL in the bag yesterday. I hit the M2 3HL off one tee and never hit the SZs.

Been a long time since I updated this. I’ve been through a fair amount of changes and this is the current state of my bag.

The wedges, putter, and hybrid are locked in for the time being. All else is up for grabs.

Yep. Still have the old VR Pro II 3 hybrid in the bag. My VPCs are still in an old staff bag as well as an Origin B2-01 and then all my old Oven stuff is in another bag. Can’t let that stuff go.

New weapons. Driver has Tensei Orange 60 Stiff and 3 wood has Tensei Orange 70 Stiff. Both with Tour Velvet Plus 4 grips.

Decided to put my old VPCs back in the bag. I’ve most recently been playing Mizuno 919 Tour irons. The Nikes have proven over the last few days of testing to be more forgiving and equal distance per iron. Nostalgia kicked in as well. I just began to miss the darn things.

So my iron flip flopping has continued. Nike VPCs to Mizuno 919 Tours back to Nike VPCs back to 919s. I’ve reshafted my VPCs with Modus 120 Tours and have put them back in the bag. The long irons are definitely more forgiving with the Nike’s. I’ve thought about splitting the set...long iron Nike’s and short irons 919s but I don’t think I’d ever be comfortable with the weight and look differences between the two.

The only extra thing I’ve got going right now is with the 7 iron. I’ve had a lot of elbow problems lately and am trying an Aerotech Steelfiber 110 in the 7 iron. It’s soft stepped one time. I’ve hit it at least 100 times over the past few days with little to no pain in my right elbow so that’s encouraging. Ball gets plenty high, but I sometimes get a jumper with it. Those random shots go a full club longer. Gonna give it a few more practice sessions to see how it goes.
