This came in the mail last night:

 

 

My question is about the signature. I do not believe that it is real, but printed. Does anyone else have this book with a signature like this?

I have a copy. It does not have the signature.

Not sure if it is real without examining it closer. Check the page behind it. Did the signature bleed thru? Is there an indentation from where the signature is (somebody pressing down).

 

Gene signed a ton of books/autographs in his life. In later years he would add the year behind his signature. Sometimes would also add a generic inscription as well to the book.

The above books, while very collectible, are a very good smattering of the game of golf and its finest.

Been looking for this one for quite some time. They are hard to find with a good dust jacket at a decent price. I found this one SIGNED for around $10. I met Paul Runyan aka Little Poison once when I was younger and he was giving a clinic. Even in his old age he was hitting them PURE.

Love me some Pat Ward-Thomas and Dan Jenkins. Ward-Thomas is very underrated. He was a member and used to play at St. Andrews often. Wasnt very good but would play with the occasional Yankee who made it onto the Old Course.

I posted some books earlier, but forgot about one which I'd lent out years ago and was recently returned to me. Upon reexamining the book, I'd forgotten how good it was.

 

Great Golf Tips (earliest edition titled, Play Better Golf), by Beverly Lewis. Great fundamentals, swing fixes.

I have a very modest collection of a couple books:

”Tom Watson’s Rules of Golf”

”The Complete Short Game” - Ernie Els

”Golf Courses of the US Open” (Barnes and Noble from a few years back)

”Pebble Beach: The Complete History” (but before they built the new 5th)

”Golf Courses of the PGA Tour” (early 90’s)

And relatively new ”True Links”

On the wish list is ”Grounds for Golf” by Geoff Shackleford, and maybe afterwards some actual antique stuff.

 

I did just order ”Yesterday In Sport” which is a Sports Illustrated work from 1968. I highly recommend it (perhaps my favorite book from the depths of the Jr. High Library) if not so much for the golf (I believe it only mentions Jones’ slam) but for the vintage sports content of days gone by. (And it’s on Amazon for $3.99) Does anyone else have it?

It’s a good read, your enjoyment of it will line up with how much you agree with Geoff Shackleford’s opinions on golf course architecture, but he tries to elaborate on what sort of strategic elements course designers have at their disposal and how those are employed by going through many of thw world’s great courses and holes. He also gives an overview of his team’s design process at rustic canyon.

 

The best part of the book are the Gil Hanse hole diagrams for the illustrations, both depicting real holes and imagined conceptual ones. Personally I really enjoyed and have read it multiple times, it’s the first and only course architecture book I’ve read, and it provided a new angle to think about courses.

My wife and I are starting a 'Power Down' challenge where we turn off all screens at least 30 minutes before bedtime for the month of May. While I dread it to some degree, I do look forward to reading some of the books I've been stashing for awhile now.
