Our take on the Lamkin Sonar Tour and Sonar Wrap Grips

Expanding on the popular Sonar line of grips, Lamkin has introduced two more offerings in 2019. The Sonar Tour was designed with direct input from top PGA Tour professional Justin Rose. This features Lamkin’s Fingerprint Technology, a more uniform texture pattern and traditional taper profile.

 

Do you realize that half of all aftermarket grips sold by the United States largest grip retailer are wrap-style grips? Lamkin certainly does and has introduced the Sonar Wrap, offering traditional wrap grip fans a technology-packed option, available in multiple weights and sizes.

I've had the Sonar Wrap and Sonar Tour on a few of my irons for a couple of weeks. The wrap is a little soft, but it is LEGIT when it's wet out.

Why is Sonar Tour nowhere on the website?

Always been a Crossline or Tour Velvet guy but these have my interest so long as not much 'give' on the firm side.

When they say traditional taper do they mean like grips were for most of the last 30yrs or the more recent trend of reduced taper under the right hand. I ask because I prefer the reduced taper and Justin Rose did as well according to Lamkim

really wish Lamkin would bring back the "old" tour wrap from the 90's. very simple and low cost

It's so hard to describe the Sonars, but I'll try. It reminds me so much of tires... On a clean race track, slicks are the best and soft compounds can get you more traction. On off road, you need a lot of negative space so the debris has some place to go and the treads can grip on to the course.

 

**Sonar Tour Standard:**

* On a Modus3 125 shaft: Butt: 1.124'; at 3': 0.894'; at 7': 0.804

* Reduced taper compared to a Tour Velvet, but not as reduced as some of Lamkin's other offerings.

* Nearly as firm as the Tour Velvet, but not quite. Mainly in part that there is way more "negative space" with the fingerprint pattern than the Tour Velvet. On top of that, I thing the Tour Velvet rubber is still a little firmer. There is some vibration reduction, but still a really good feel what's happening through the shot.

* Rubber compound is not tacky. The compound on it's own, I think the Tour Velvet makes more friction... The finger print pattern is good and makes some great traction. The pattern is diagonal, and the wrap pattern seems to work way better.

* In rain, it's odd. The rubber absorbs less water than the Tour Velvet, but there are more nooks and crannies for the the water to hide. I feel like in rain, the Tour Velvet is a hair better. I think if you had a plush towel, it might be better... You have to blot the grip more than rub it (if that makes any sense)

* Overall a nice grip, but for the money I'd definitely stick with a Tour Velvet.

 

**Sonar Wrap Standard+:**

* On a Modus3 125 shaft: Butt: 1.105'; at 3': 0.884'; at 7': 0.850

* It has the profile of CP2 without all the stupid blue and white lines that are etched into the grip. It's squishier than the CP2 as well. The butt feels smallish due to the reduced taper.

* The fingerprint pattern combined with the wrap is _amazing_. It's seriously a fantastic feel.

* The softer feel, traction, taper, etc feels like you're in control of the club, but you can't "steer" it. It's almost like the Ben Hogan drill of taking your lower thumb and index finger off the grip. I almost feel like the grip forces me to _swing_ the club.

* There is some loss of feedback through the shot. I wish I could try this grip with a firmer compound.

* Like the Sonar Tour, you have to spend a little more time drying off the club. But when it's wet, the Sonar Wrap does a really great job. It's not as good as cord but it's on it's way there.

* If you liked the CP2, this handily beats it. You have to be willing to play a softer grip though.

 

**For comparison a Tour Velvet 360 on a Modus3 125 shaft: Butt: 1.095; at 3': 0.875; at 7': 0.764**

Agreed. Impressive. I wish Taylormade would add the Sonar Tour to their list of grip options.
