Classic Golf in the North West of England

Recommended Posts

There are two dates for your diary. First up is an event at Fleetwood GC on Thursday May 9th t/o at 10.30. At present 3 fourball times are reserved, I can get more if there is demand. Cost is £20 for the round, no catering has been arranged, we shall make that up as we go along.

The date ties in with the British Masters hosted by Tommy Fleetwood at nearby Hillside, Wednesday is the Pro/Am

Please PM me to reserve your slot.

Secondly, I am very pleased to announce the inaugural MacKenzie Revival Open at Morecambe Golf Club on Friday August 2nd. Teetimes are between 11.00 and 13.00 in flights of 3. It is as 'open' as we can get it being open to men and women, Amateur and Pro alike.

Format is singles stableford, full handicap, non- qualifying.

The cost is £30 which includes the round, hot buffet afterwards and prizes. Bearing in mind that this is Lancashire it doesn't get more generous than that.

Booking is through the Morecambe Golf Club website at www.morecambegolfclub.com (the Open Competition banner gives access) which also details entry requirements.

There is also a Facebook page MacKenzie Revival Golf for chat and comment

Morecame GC is a full blown Alistair MacKenzie layout and is handily located only 10 minutes from J34 on the M6

Is a rope provided or do you take your own?

It's a vintage event so I see no reason why you shouldn't bring your own. Specifications might be important, only best Manilla Hemp sourced during the 1930-1990 timeframe, possibly remakes from the Indian sub-continent. We could leave it to the scrutineers.

I was rather hoping you would bring yourself and period clubs along, possibly with a couple of mates.

As an aside, do you think a 'concours d'elegance' style comp. for the best in show set of clubs would go down well?

Sounds like a great event. Good idea about the "best in show" clubs, or even expand it to period type attire. Doesn't have to be fancy, long sleeve shirt, maybe a tie or bow tie, and long pants or knickers.

Good luck, gentlemen.

Thank you, sir. The period from 1930 and 1990 covers a range of fashion so ideally you would want to gear up for the era of the equipment you are using. !950s and Elvis could be a bit of a laugh! But 1970s, Tom Watson ruperts and Pringle sweaters would be easy to do and easy on the eye.

I'm partial to the 1970's look sported by Paul Runyan wearing bold plaid slacks and a bright red turtle neck.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

I'm still good for this.

It should be a fine day and I encourage all UK classic players to join in, we don't get many chances to meet up and share experiences and knowledge and generally talk old clubs, Fleetwood should be an great course for this too!

It's not all about the score.

Last call for Fleetwood Persimmon and Blades on May 9th, tee off at 10.30.

As it stands we are 8, the bulk of those from Facebook. From this forum only me and Jiggered, which is disappointing. Where are the Manchester and Carlisle brigades? It's the silence as much as anything, maybe the new format on here has turned off more folk than we care to admit, maybe other reasons, but one thing is a certainty...you can't plan outings with this level of response! Have a nice golfing Easter

The Persimmon Golf Society hosted it's first formal event at Fleetwood Golf Club today just a few miles to the North of Hillside GC where Tommy Fleetwood was hosting his British Masters European Tour event.

Our weather was slightly better. While cool, it didn't actually rain while we were out, and the wind out of the N.E. was never more than 2 club's worth We were 9 in number, what we lacked in feet on the ground, we more than made up for in quality. My flight fielded a 6 handicap (the winner with 36 Stableford points), a 5 handicap and myself off 12. We had 4 apologies for absence, so the interest is there.

There is a video clip is of Christian McMillan playing a 7 iron (MacGregor MTR) over the pin of the 167 yard 8th, but I don't seem able to upload it as you used to. Shame, no more clips of a sweet swinging Freddie etc. For those interested more commentary/ clips appear on the Persimmon Golf Society Facebook page, already home to refugees from Golfwrx.

Don't know how many Brits hang by here these days but here is a last call for a P&B invitational at Morecambe GC on Friday week, 2nd August.

The formal MacKenzie Revival Event was cancelled by the Club due to the usual reasons but I have resurrected it as an informal 'Persimmon Revival Open' and we are a very lucky 13 at present and looking for more.

So, if you are in the NW of Enland and fancy a knock on a 6000yard (not too long) MacKenzie classic at introductory guest with member rates please make contact.

Tee off 11.30 - 12.00

Man would love to live over there with you guys. That would be the bomb---- No one close to me plays classic golf and everyone around here thinks I am touched in the head because I do!! Would love playing those classic everyday working man's courses you guys have. Over here I have to pick and choose what courses I play because of design because some courses do not lend theirselves well to classic equipment and seasoned players

You're so right Stu, sometimes we don't realise how lucky we are. There are lots of shorter courses here that were laid out back in the day that have never had the money, space or inclination to be "modernised". These also tend to be the ones that it's easier and cheaper to get on so it's a win-win situation.

If you ever did get over here you'd be most welcome at any meet up. There aren't many of us at the moment but it's not a big country so travel isn't usually an issue and I do get the feeling that there's some growth of interest in classic golf.

We are lucky, Stu. Many courses are cheap to play on still, annual dues at our place are £750 for unlimited access. Similar around and about with the occasional higher priced exception.

I discovered a closet P&B man at our Club who will be joining us on Friday. He opened his locker to show me some PGA Tommy Armour Persimmon which he had stowed away for 30 years. 'Will these be OK Chris?' So we went out for a 9 hole knock on Monday which turned into a 14 hole knock before darkness overtook. He registered 5 pars on the last 5 holes and is hooked. He says 'I've got a '70s hairstyle (grey mullett), still love '70s music and now I've got '70s golf!' Plays off 9 and has some Ben Sayers and a an Anser putter. What's not to like? See you all Friday at Morecambe.
