Lawsonia Fans

I received an email from Lawsonia this morning and if you visit their on line store you can purchase green fees for a foursome at the price of a threesome. The green fees may be used at any time during the season in 2018. Ostensibly they are running the promotion to celebrate having been moved up in public course rankings. I believe the offer is only good for a week.

I have had my sights set on playing here for years. Finally booked to play it this summer. I can't wait. I love this drone footage - http://www.friedegg.co/golf-courses/lawsonia-links . That being said, I had a random comparison that may be way off. But looking at that video it reminds me of a more open Bethpage Black. Has anyone played both, is that a crazy/wrong thought?

Having played both (albeit only once on Bethpage), I would say that the Black course defense itself much more off the tee, Lawsonia on and around the greens. You can easily rack up strokes at Lawsonia by barely missing greens or putting yourself in the wrong spots on greens. Bethpage is a course I would play once in a while as it is big and brawny, Lawsonia is a course that I would play every single day if I could.

Whenever I give someone tips on how to play Lawsonia I always tell them that on every green complex there is massive trouble left, right, and long and that the safest play is usually to play short of the green and let it roll up. Only a couple holes where you can't do that because of steep elevation at the front of the green, but for the most part you can use that strategy quite successfully all day long. Might end up with more bogeys than you like, but far less doubles and triples which are easy to get if you end up off the green and down a hill.

I think there are several holes where it makes sense to run up or it is easy to do so, like #2, 9, 10, 11, 15.....holes where you can but the window is fairly narrow or you'd need to work it in there to bounce up #1, 3, 4, 5, 12, 14, 17, 18; and holes where you cannot run up 6, 7, 8, 13, 16(maybe u could run up). IMO an aerial approach still more rewarded then a run up approach!

I'm not saying it's better to run it up there, just saying that you can eliminate the disaster holes around the green if you go that route. I think #6 is really the only one where you absolutely have to land it on the green (not including par 3s). Even some of the more narrow front of the green holes like #3 and #9 have room to get roll it up depending on where you put your drive. #3 looks really narrow, but the ball funnels through the shoot really nicely. I often leave it short on #3 and just in front and then try and get an up and down for par.

I don't mess with 3 either, center of green and two putt. It sets up great for my drive but hitting that green at times seems like a chore. Good hole!
